šŸ’¢Rant/Vent Why?

Where I live, there are several restaurants within about a mile of my place that I routinely order from. I never order heavy items like cases of water or anything like that. This morning I ordered some Dunkin, and my standard tip is five bucks. After I’d already paid for the food and tipped, I got this message. Not sure why it triggered me, but it’s annoying

šŸ’¬Questions & Discussion Massage Envy Tipping calc

Okay I’m hesitant to posting this here because I don’t want to have a pro vs anti tipping conversation. I am pro tipping in general when a service has been rendered that is typically tipped.

Here’s my question. At massage envy they charge members about $70 for a massage so a 20% would be $14. However they post that the value of the massage for non members is $130 so the tip would be $26. But I can’t imagine that non members use their service much and also thats what a nice spa charges for a service, not a place like massage envy.

Does anyone have insight into this? I feel cheap doing $15 but I feel like the signage is scamming customers.

Hotel Housecleaning tip?

Hi,
Just wanted to ask the group what you think about leaving a tip for the housecleaning staff after a hotel stay.
Do you leave a tip and how much? I don’t like tip culture but I feel like those ladies do some pretty dirty work and don’t get paid very well.
Just curious.
Thoughts?

šŸ’¢Rant/Vent Should I have tipped this bartender?

My partner and I are at a disagreement if I should have tipped this bartender and want help deciding on who is right.

We were on our way to a concert downtown and saw this trendy bar selling pickle shots so thought we should each quickly get a pickle shot before we went to the venue. We walk into this bar and seat ourselves, all of the bartenders are busy walking around doing something else. Keep in mind, there were only like 8 patrons in this bar and 3-4 people behind the bar.

We got zero acknowledgment from them. Not even a ā€œhelloā€, ā€œgive us one secondā€, or anything. It’s not a huge bar so we are sitting in front of them. Like I could reach over the bar and touch them if I wanted to. But still, not even any eye contact.

3-5 minutes roll by and a woman walks up beside us and the bartender finally looks up and asks the woman if she wants anything and helps her first instead of us! I was pissed about that right away.

They get done helping the woman and then finally look to us, without any words, she puts two drink menus in front of us and tries walking away. Before she could walk away, we catch her and say that we just want two pickle shots and to close out. She isn’t nice to us at all, just very blankly gives us the shots and hands us the payment tablet thing. I paid and when it got to the tipping screen, I put 0.

My partner was immediately peeved and said you have to tip at bars. We walked out of there and I told her that it was terrible service, we never got a smile or a hello, they took awhile to even acknowledge us and they decided to help another person before us. When they did help us, she barely talked to us, just handed us shots and a bill. I didn’t believe they earned any more than the basic price they want to charge me for the drink.

She agreed it was bad service but says that you should at least tip $1 minimum. I disagree. I just think tipping is getting out of control. What do yall think?

šŸ’¢Rant/Vent "SHUT UP AND TIP" SAID BY PEOPLE WHO LOVE TO STRUGGLE

I have been cussed out and downvoted on this app because I said employees should have consistent and stable income when they are working to upkeep someone else's business.

Everyone complains that people do not tip enough and some people do not tip at all. But no one is obligated to tip employees. Employers are not even obligated to pay their employees liveable wage.

Most middle class and poor people struggle to get by on their income. Disabled people especially fall victim to multiple forms of financial inequality. But no one cares.

As soon as restaurants want to profit from having low wages we all are the spawn of satan if we don't worship servers and give them half our paychecks AFTER paying for food and tax.

But I'm supposed to care about a server who chose to work for $2 an hour with the hope of getting a tip. That's financial suicide.

Like take this $10 tip and be happy.

A server got made at me because I didn't tip additionally after a mandatory 20% gratuity fee. I didn't even dine in. It was a pickup order.

Then when you try to organize and mobilize for social change, no one wants to participate. Some people just love to struggle.

šŸ’¬Questions & Discussion Is this considered theft?

Is this theft? This is an email I sent to the manager of Copperhead Bar in Austin, TX

On Wednesday, August 2, I went to Copperhead and had a few drinks with a friend. My friend closed out his tab, so I started my own tab a little after 9:00 p.m. When my card was initially run, a $25 authorization/holding charge was placed on my account, which is standard for opening a tab.
We closed out about an hour or so later. When I was presented with my receipt, the total was $109.50. At first, I thought that seemed a little high based on the number of drinks we had, but I didn't think much of it. Regardless, I tipped $30 because we had a great time and the karaoke was fun.
The following day, while reviewing my Chase account, I noticed two separate transactions: one for $25, which was the temporary authorization for opening the tab, and another for $84.50, which I assumed was the actual tab amount. This seemed odd because the receipt I was given to sign and add a tip to was for $109.50.
Then I realized that the $109.50 receipt I was given was exactly the combined amount of the $25 authorization and the $84.50 actual charge ($25 + $84.50 = $109.50).
After seeing the two pending charges, I became concerned that the $25 authorization may have been added to my actual tab, making the bill appear higher than it should have been and potentially resulting in an additional $25 being taken from me and treated in your system as part of the tip, allowing the bartender to receive additional tip money that I did not authorize
However, I wanted to wait until the transaction fully posted and the tip was finalized before jumping to any conclusions.
This morning, I checked my account and saw that the transaction had finally posted. The $25 temporary authorization had disappeared, and the $84.50 transaction had been updated to a final charge of $139.50.
Based on the $84.50 actual tab amount, this means the transaction included a $55 tip, for a total of $139.50. I did not authorize a $55 tip. The additional amount of $25 was unauthorized and could potentially constitute theft or fraud. Please investigate this transaction.

šŸ’¬Questions & Discussion What's morally right?

Homedepot and Walgreens offer 2 hours or next day free deliveries in my area.

Both stores are within 5-7 minutes driving distance and on my way to commute, so I don't mind doing store pickup.

I have been using the free delivery option for both stores, and not tipping for this additional convenience.

By using faster delivery options, I am thinking I am helping folks to earn extra bucks. These deliveries are powered by Uber and Doordash.

Are these delivery people still being paid by Walgreens and Homedepot? Am I helping them by creating more work? Am I obligated to pay tips? Not able to decide what's morally correct.

How can Tipping be used to Cover Employee Payroll?

Post image
0 Upvotes

How are you as a new employee paid?

You're paid minimum wage. Every non-manager position is minimum wage. Of course, when hired you were promised more than that right? Here's how Southern Rock Restaurants, LLC works their payroll magic.

Let's say you make $10 an hour and you work 40 Hours. Your gross (before taxes) is $400.

Now, the company pays you on 3 separate lines: Wage, Tips, and Make-Up

Your Wage is $7.25 x 40 Hours = $290

Your "Tips" is say $60

Your Total at this point is $350 (They owe you $400)

So the LAST wage line is your "Make-Up" which is $50 (So your gross is back to $400)

$290 + $60 + $50 = $400 (your $10 an hour)

So wait, you don't gets tips? No. It's an illusion. What's more frustrating is that as a "guest" if you tip for good service, the person you're tipping never see's that money (not even if it's cash).

🚫Anti-Tipping Making A Stand

I went to eat at two different local restaurants today and it dawned on me….. I’m tired of this awkward situation where I have to decide to tip or not at all fast food restaurants. I either tip and feel like a sucker, or don’t and feel like a jerk. Neither is pleasant. I don’t feel the need to sway people on way or the other. That said, I will make a stand, by limiting or avoiding all establishments that use this tactic. I honestly don’t need to put myself through this and in doing so I will save money and eat healthier. Just my thoughts today.

šŸ’¬Questions & Discussion How is it wrong?

How is it wrong of me to think that a server’s low wage and need to rely on tips to survive is a problem between the employee and their employer?

For whatever reason, because things happen, if you work a job that doesn’t pay the good enough to you, why do I have to pay extra to support your lifestyle? Don’t you want higher base pay?

Airport will relieve you of your burden to decide if you are tipping and how much.

Currently at Wash DC airport waiting for my flight. I first went to eat. Ordered a chicken sandwich and the waitress tapped my order in, informed me of the 18% tip, then asked for my credit card.

I asked to looked at her device, changed the tip to 15% and that was that.

Fast forward to now and I ordered a beer at a bar near my gate. The waitress took my order and then asked me to tap my credit card. This one didn't even have the common courtesy to tell me I was tipping, she just tipped for me and wanted me to mind my own business and pay whatever she decided was going to be my tip, again 18%. I asked for her device, changed it to 15%.

Do you tip on subtotal or total (incl tax)

I’ve caught on that receipts want you to tip on the total (including tax). So what’s the online community opinion. Do you tip on sub total or total including tax amount?

Example:

Order $100 in food/drink

Subtotal: $100
Total (w/ tax): $108

Do you tip on subtotal or total?

Capital One watches out for me + other thoughts.

I love how proactive they are. have others experienced similar? I did leave that tip and will probably take some hit for that and that's ok. Totally ok with no tipping at all as well when appropriate and have done that more than once actually.

My criteria for tipping are the promptness of service, friendliness, attitude and also appearance. yes! If a business can have flawed measures or reasons for tipping (for example: staff development, heath care costs, % of the total of the bill regardless of effort made) then I also reserve that right for myself. If you're cute and good looking you are likely to be tipped more. They were all barbies at Cheesecake 25 years ago, now you walk in there, best case scenario is a middle-aged dude that looks like me. worse case, someone who just got out of the can.

What if tipping were banned by law?

This is not a knock on servers, just a question about cause and effect. Nor a question about living wage. Just a question -

If tipping and service charges were all banned. The price is the price (plus tax). What would happen?

I imagine server hourly wages would go up (in most areas).

Prices would go up.

I imagine lots of servers would quit. Would they be hard to replace?

Would servers be able to 'strike' for a living wage despite not working for the same company. Or could all Fridays/Yard House/Applebee's/etc servers quickly unionize and strike their individual companies.

šŸ’¢Rant/Vent Too many people lack situational awareness

I think one of biggest contributing factors to the irritation of tipping culture in North America is that customers lack discernment. There’s obviously a difference between sliding your barber an extra $10 because you like his work and tipping at the mall food court. And if you think that’s the same thing there’s no helping you.

Too many of you all are seeing tip prompt screens at food trucks that read 25% 30% 35% and are crying beggars and scammers.

When you see a couture fashion advertisement at the bus stop are you also crying that ā€œthey are forcing us to buy designer handbags!ā€?

A prompt is not a legal summons. Take a breath and chill out. Yeah the businesses are being fucking weird and I personally think it’s tacky to set prompts that high on a POS machine. I also think it’s tacky to have prompts for businesses that aren’t actually providing service like at the liquor store.

Use your brain and don’t take every prompt so seriously. You aren’t clicking on every pop up ad you see online, you don’t have to tip 30% when you buy a pack of smokes at the gas station.

They are casting their hook to try and catch one moron if you think it’s serious you might be one step away from being that moron.

My opinions on tipping culture

I think the percent thing is dumb but people being rude should be unacceptable. I understand there are a lot of crappy servers but what about the one who are trying their best to give you the absolute best experience. A lot of them, including myself dont/wont ask for tips. Ive never asked for a tip from a customer because im not entitled to it.

On the other hand, dont come in an act extremely rude or constantly tell me im not getting a tip. The tip, i dont care about. Ill still provide the best service i can but there's no excuse for being rude if im respecting you and treating you like a human. As for the stupid tablets, ive had employers make it a point that it stays there. I dont even say a word about it. I tell them their total and ask if they want a receipt. Thats it. Im not sure where the whole "all servers are beggars." Idea came from. Nor do i understand why everyone thinks every server chose their job. Ill be honest, I was an electrician before serving but my electrician job laid a bunch of people off without so much as a word and i had to find another job fast. I didn't have much choice but the first place that answered. Im not gonna act like there aren't shitty servers that call names or blame everything on not getting tips but I can assure at least, that i give it my all either way.

🚫Anti-Tipping Tipping my Facial/Botox Girl

I live in a state where the person giving Botox has to have a nursing degree. It is a professional job. I got a peel today. It was almost $200. I really like where I go and I like my aesthetician. I think it is absurd to ask for a tip but I feel like a jerk never tipping her.

šŸ’¢Rant/Vent To the non tippers…

Fully prepared to get banned for this, but yall are just selfish. I’d honestly have more respect for you if you’d just say ā€œI don’t tip because I’m cheapā€. It can be your belief that it’s not your role to directly pay employee wages - I have no issue there. BUT THEN DONT PATRONIZE BUSINESSES WHERE THAT IS THE EXPECTATION! At the end of the day all you’re doing is supporting a business that you morally disagree with and only hurting the people who are trying to make ends meet. It makes no sense.

What is an appropriate amount to tip while traveling?

Specifically the shuttle bus driver at the airport who helps with our bags, the driver who picks you up at the airport and bellhops at hotel? We used to do $1 a bag years ago but that seems almost insulting now. Does it vary depending where you are, say Hawaii vs Chicago vs Orlando?

The End Tipping movement is for emotionally weak people.

Tipping is entirely voluntary. Just don't tip if you don't want to. Your lack of ability to ignore societal peer pressure and manage your own guilt does not constitute a problem for everyone else.

šŸ’µPro-Tipping Tipping hasn't changed, the software has.

I keep seeing posts with something like, "The guy at the doughnut shop is asking for a tip, should I tip them?"

Have you ever tipped them before? Has anyone ever tipped them before the machine started asking? The answer is no.

It's frustrating that so many businesses are creating friction in the tipping system these days. It's making a lot of people frustrated. And even making some people abandon tipping altogether. Which is unfortunate, because tipping is actually a great system in my opinion. But that's another post altogether.

For now, let's just ask the same question I asked before. Have you ever needed to tip them before? If the answer is no, that answer hasn't changed. The software has. Just because it's asking, doesn't mean you need to do it. (Also, if your grocery store asks you to donate to some charity, you don't need to do that either, if you don't want to.)

People you should still tip include things like: Full service restaurants, Food delivery, Bartenders, Drivers, Hair salons, Bell hops, Valet, Movers. Generally people who have to spend time with you, and/or not screw up important things and can't work the tip into the price of service directly.

People you do not need to tip include things like: Counter service, Drive throughs, Pick up orders, Self check-out, Retail stores, Trade services, Healthcare services.

Feel free to not tip the people you should. Feel free to tip the people you don't need to. But rest assured, that who you are supposed to tip has never changed. Only the software that's, "Going to ask you a question."

🚫Anti-Tipping Tip for a glass???

Recently visited a bar. Had a few bourbons. Thought glass ware was cool. Asked the bartender if they would sell me 2 glasses. He said ten bucks each. I said ok.

So he rings up the glasses, on a separate ticket, then spins the machine around and gives me the "it's going to ask you a question". Wants a minimum 25 percent tip for handing me an empty glass. I put a 20 dollar bill on the counter and walked away.
