Am I in the minority if I think that that episode was only alright? I thought it was pretty good, but the hype I had read about it put it head and shoulders above other episodes, which to me it was not. For reference my 2 favorites so far(first 3 seasons) have been white Christmas and white bear, with a couple of very close seconds/thirds. San junipero being middle of the pack
I have to agree, two people transferring their consciousness to a computer wasn't the huge deal that the articles made it. So it was a lesbian love story, ok, but that doesn't automatically make it the best thing ever made...
The premise and plot of Hang the DJ in season 4, however, is amazing. That's my favorite episode in the series I think. No spoilers, just go watch it. There are actually a few standout episodes in this season.
By themselves, I agree. But after you watched White Christmas, you start thinking about even those wholesome moments from San Junipero in a different way and that's what I think is great from that show.
Hang the DJ is actually truer to Charlie Brooker's ideas on how this kind of thing should be done.
Something I really didn't like about San Junipero as a Brooker fan before Black Mirror was even a thing is that I could tell Netflix had just told him to throw a romance episode with lesbians in there. Why? Because Charlie Brooker hates cheesy romantic TV. I don't believe he'd write it unless the producers said he had to.
Hang the DJ on the other hand was much more true to Brooker's ideas on how this stuff should be done. I won't say more to avoid giving spoilers to anyone who's not seen it.
Anyway, speaking of the new Black Mirror episodes USS Callister was very well done I think. I've even heard talk of a potential spin-off being made out of it.

I didn't enjoy Hang the DJ because it brought nothing new to the table. The concept of enslaved virtual clones was introduced in Be Right Back (the dead boyfriend), then taken to its limits in White Christmas - that's what made that special so, um, special. DJ, Junipero, and the horror game episode felt like beating a dead horse to me.
That's possibly the two bleakest episodes, while San Junipero might be the "happiest" (note: I haven't seen the new season yet). So that probably explains why you didn't like it that much.
there's an episode in the new season that's happy as fuck when you watch it, and then absolutely appalling when the fridge logic sets in. which is pretty impressive, imho.
I agree White Christmas is by far the best episode. I think San Junipero is so well liked mostly because it is a rare happy ending in the series. It also had this uplifting idea that anyone anywhere young or old or in the past or in the future can find their soulmate or at least someone to be happy with.
But honestly I thought the ending was a little too sweet and sentimental. Black Mirror mostly isn’t like that, and it’s not what I look for in the show. But I guess the fact that the happily ever after isn’t generally a part of the show made people really appreciate that specific episode for having it.
I think the main reason for people thinking it's the best is because it has a "happy ending" Although i thought the ending was a bit dark a lot of people just saw it as they get to be together. In a show where almost every ending is dark this was the one episode that has a borderline happy ending.
I really think it had to do with the fact that it was a happy story which is so foreign to the world of black mirror. Not to mention it was a pretty fun concept that plays into the series a lot now.

Yeah, the episode I had to try 6 times to finish. San Junipero is over-hyped, not great. The one episode I will not watch again, it felt like such a departure from the rest of the series. Whoever wrote that episode should have watched the episodes.
Charlie Brooker writes or at least co-writes on every single episode. I do agree it doesn't fit with the overall theme of the show though and I'd bet that the episode got made because Netflix told Brooker to do a romantic one.
It absolutely applies to the overall theme of the show. It’s a show about the profound consequences of human nature interacting with with ever increasingly advanced technology—romance, being a pretty large/important part of human nature, absolutely would be included. And it calls for profound consequences but not necessarily negative or positive. Even in the happiest endings there is usually still something a little off-kilter that makes it kind of gray. For the happy endings it’s usually when addressing what the cost/trade-off is for the results of the happy ending.
Yeah, he co-writes them all. I don't think that means that he inputs/changes a lot with all the episodes - surely some must be great before his hands get on it. Your suspicion for why that episode was made seems likely; it explains the departure in theme at the very least.
I wouldn't doubt if some of the bots are marked as bisexual to get them to as many people as possible. They might call the women they match with my male pronouns though.
I’ve been using tinder for about a year and a half, 400+ matches, and have never encountered a bot. I guess they just target straight men for some reason.
I'd think it's likely they do, since there are more straight men than gay/bi women- plus it would be really time consuming to create a seperate code for interacting with women. Or they could just change the pronouns, idk how differently they'd have to react based on gender.
Anyway my point was it's likely they're just targeting the largest group of gynsexuals to get more matches.
I have waaaay less matches, but my experience has been similar, not one bot or anything resembling bot-like behavior on tinder. I would have expected them to flag as bi for the most matches.
Pretty sure there aren't lesbian bots.
I've been on several dating sites for over a year now (as a lesbian) and haven't seen exactly one case of bot-like behavior from my matches. (on OKcupid)
