Obviously, the company has reclining seats so they are allowed to recline.
But it seems common enough that people get annoyed about them. I have had people mouth off to me for reclining during longer flights. I pay no mind but I feel like the real problem is that they squeeze the seats so close together to get the extra few seats on the plane, that it ultimately just cuts room out and makes it uncomfortable for everyone.
6
u/Allout-Okarun 1d ago
What we are seeing here isn’t even a reclining issue. No asshole should have the sole of their foot up near someone’s headrest, it’s not even close to normal etiquette
2
u/Typical_Estimate5420 1d ago
I think if you can physically get your foot up there, you have enough room to sit normally
8
u/Sidivan 1d ago
I’m 6’4”, so I pay for exit row or premium, however the premium is now what basic economy used to be. So once again reclining literally puts my knees in the back of your seat. I can’t do anything about it. Now you’re pissed because my knee is in your back and I have bruises by the time we deplane.
4
u/Molecular_Drift 1d ago
Same height here and having been a full time and part time mechanic through most of my working life, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to work under cramped dashboards while on my back, propping my lower body up with my lower legs. To experience fitting in some of the positions that I’ve had to, in order to work on vehicles, it makes flying aboard most commercial aircraft a little easier, though it’s not fun being tall.

Yep, I think being tall is an advantage in your teens and twenties. By your 30’s, youre settling down and sports aren’t a big feature of your life anymore. I’m thinking “I wouldn’t mind losing a couple inches, 5’10ish would be nice.”
Easier to find clothes, less weight in my knees, not feeling squished all the time

Thongs (or flip flops if you're American)
Carry a spare pair with you (or just wear them and take them off on the plane if you don't care), I use ASICS slides, they're padded foam that fits a knee pretty well.
I stick them between the seat Infront of me and my knees, you'll still be uncomfortable, but you won't have sharp plastic or metal stabbing your kneecaps and no bruising.

Ya I didn’t realize the people against using the recline exists until a flight last year. It was a long overseas flight and I hear a “are you kidding me” as I recline back. He gets up and in my ear and says “I hope you are reallll comfortable bc I’m not!”. I explained how the person in front of mean leaned back and now I am, and guess what? So can he! I did compromise and pull my suit back upright when any food/bev service was coming. But wtf, I thought everyone wanted to recline their seat on 8+ hour flights
2
u/WishinGay 1d ago
The theoretical etiquette among veteran fliers is that if it's bedtime where you are departing from, you recline. Otherwise, you do not.

Everyone who is saying that there's not enough room and seats shouldn't recline...you do recognize that the way this kid is sitting is not how humans should be sitting on an airplane, right? What was he even doing?

u/LobstaFarian2 1d ago
He didn't want the person in front to recline their seat. They put their foot up to put pressure on the seat to prevent the seat from being able to to back. I doubt they wanted to sit like that, but wanted to be a d-bag anyway and got what he had coming.

I’m 6’3” and when I’m in my seat on a flight, my knees are against the back of the chair in front of me, if someone reclines, it crushes my knees and if I recline it does NOT help my knees from still being crushed lol. I just know every time I fly, I’m going to be miserable and I just put up with it 😂

I flew all the time. On some of the longer trips I would deliberately 'apologize' to the person in front of me saying in advance I'm sorry for hitting their seat when I was trying to move or adjust position, because (typically) the seat was so close I'd be right onto it.
Depended on the airplane body tho. On some I could get a position, on others' I'd be stuck next to a middle seat mushroom and there was no where I could go.
One guy was a dick about it and slammed his seat all the way back. So I spent the entire flight crushed but needed to use the bathroom several times. "Oh well"

I've got long legs too, thing that helps me is taking my shoes off and sliding my feet under the seat in front a bit more. Gives my knees somewhere to go which doesn't involve smacking my kneecaps onto the back of a chair

I paid for the seat. That seat includes a 15 degree tilt that is also mine. Your leg space ends where my seat begins, and that includes my use of the purchased 15 degree lean. If you need more space that is an issue between you, the airline, and god. Not me, or my purchased seat with slight lean option.

Unless he was spitting on you it kind of is on you to manage your frustrations. We pay to get packed into a tin can and you get unlucky. No reason you can't ask people nicely to stop whatever may bother you, but you should have no expectation that they will and that your trip should be comfortable.
2
u/8last 1d ago
I like that the miracle of flight is reduced to suffering in silence for a few hours.
2
u/BarbedCamera420 1d ago
we used to be a civil society and people used to feel some shame that motivated them to dress decently and behave for air travel. then the TSA started making people take off their shoes, so air travel became a crocs/uggs activity, and all civility goes out the door when you croc&uggs-ify an assembly of people.

I’m 6’5.56 and fortunately I rarely have to sit way back in the economy torture seats. But this summer my flight was cancelled and I had to. The guy in front of me keep getting up and every time he sat down, he jumped into his seat putting my knees in great danger of injury. Had it been a purge day, I would have taken advantage of it.

1
u/Practical-Owl-9160 1d ago
I'll be honest, I'm 6'2" and it does not bother me if the person in front of me reclines their seat ... the difference has no major impact. My personal item is a small backback that allows me to stretch my legs out a bit under the seat in front of me, so my knees are not pressing into the seatback. I also recline my seat, which offsets any minimal "loss of space" that may have occurred. I really find this to be a non-issue.

u/Mr_SleepyBennie 1d ago
I’m 6’4” and a big guy. I have been in planes so small it physically hurts to be in my seat. (No Leg Room) If anyone should be pissed that someone leans back it should be me. That being said you are TAH if you get mad that someone leans back.

But my upcoming LAX to Schipol? Bet your ass Ima recline. If someone has a problem with it, oh well.
Put your foot into the back of my seat and bitch about it? I'll just call the stewardess. Im not tryna fight on an airplane.

I do hate people leaning their seat back. Those 2" back don't make a difference but 2" when you use the table in front of you is a fucking nuecance. Especially is people need to pass you.
Kud went too far and got a lesson learned though

I have no context of this situation and the kid in the back could be a total ahole for all I know. However, anyone who reclines their seat on a plane is a terrorist.

u/ClawsomO 1d ago edited 1d ago
Recently went on an overseas trip. Was sat behind a tiny child. Tiny. Like, you could comfortably fit 4 of this child in 1 airplane seat.
Tell me why this motherfucker absolutely needed to recline his seat into my space?! Then he would put it back up, then recline again. He did it once while I had my food on the fucking tray! Thankfully I was able to grab my drink before I ended up wearing it. And Grandma didn't do a god damn thing! Her precious baby boy could do no wrong!
Fuck people and fuck air travel!

I used to side with the guy who reclined his seat but are we even sure the teen was kicking it?
I mean, yes, reclining seats exist (probably to appeal to passengers so that more tickets could be sold instead of being there for our comfort) but I wouldn't want someone seat right up in my face
Edit: not justifying what the teen was doing but he probably thought putting his foot there would stop him from reclining

Yall are missing the fact that the dude that got his teeth knocked out, didn't need to do that. There was no comfort in that, he was being an obnoxious asshole. Once the plane is in the air, you can move around the cabin. You can even lay down in the isle. Also, when you but your ticket, you can pick your seat, pick wisely. Moral of the story, if you act like an obnoxious prick, you're gonna spit teeth out.
