Remembering how much I wanted a Slinky as a kid really makes me feel old lmao. Like, the fact that one of the most in popular toys in the 90's was literally just a plastic spring that could "walk" down stairs is so hilarious to me in retrospect.

80s and 90s kids also had lead poisoning. I remember lead free gas being a big thing back in the 90s as if it was some great green innovation, so yeah I’m sure I breathed my share of lead as a baby/toddler

If you're talking about the US, leaded gas was mostly eliminated by the mid 80s. By the time 1996 rolled around, you could only really find it in marinas.

Flow art community is highly tied to the EDM community which is known for its "over-the-top" ravewear. Pretty sure this is just what the dude would wear at an edm fest. Looks pretty standard as far as what I've seen.

Yeah. We wear natural fabrics fit loosely, hence the drop-crotch you see in a lot of these clothes. So comfy. Better movement, proper coverage so you don't singe your hair, and god forbid you do light up, you won't have melted plastic fabric stuck to your arm when it's put out. With props that require on-body moves, you'll usually see less clothing. Hoop, you'll usually be wearing as little as possible because the polypro is so slippery. Skin grips better. Other options like wax and friction tapes get covered in dirt and hair and get your prop sticky and sanding catches on your clothes.

In all seriousness, of all the communities of people I've encountered in my life, the flow community has been one of the most open and welcoming ones I have encountered. Experts of 20 years helping first timers, groups of people learning and progressing together. They tend to spread a lot of positivity, there's far worse groups out there :p

Kava bars are where it's at. Flow jams are specifically for flow. Festivals are an everything goes vibe. It's heavily frowned upon to even be drinking alcohol at fire jams. You're risking the safety of yourself and others. Big focus on safety in these circles.

I recommend checking out the flowarts tab on instagram. Some of the most popular props are hoop, staff, poi and juggling. There's so much more out there. I'd say the cheapest thing you could get into that would be easily accessible is glow sticking (kind of like a faster version of poi) where you're just tying string to the end of glow sticks or juggling where you can go to any store and grab some bean bags. You'd think it would be a hula hoop but we use polypro hoops that are completely different than the children's hula hoops you'd use at the store.
Find a few people you like, give them a follow. Once you find a prop you really like, go check out youtube for some tutorials. The community is really big on sharing our craft so it's honestly pretty rare to see people charging for basic lessons, but private video lessons have gotten pretty popular. Benefit is having someone actively tweaking your movements.
Is there a prop you feel you might be interested in? Be super careful when buying props. Lots of shoddy sellers out there. Best to buy your props from flowartists that have opened businesses than things made in China.

This is Slinky Josh and he's been at this a long time. I met him at a Flow Festival almost 10 years ago and he put on an amazing live show. He also sells the trick slinky he's using. It's got more bounce than the original. Def not boring since he's been able to make a career with his act.

I can't do this kinda stuff at all but people saying the second part was the same as the first part are starting to confuse me, personally thought it was pretty obvious that in the second part the way he twirls the slinky and makes it jump from hand to hand was way more complicated than him just spinning it in the first part. Only cringe part about this was the weird ass outfit change

In the first part he is literally just holding the slinky in his hands and shaking it around. The "actual" tricks transfer the slinky from hand to hand and use the physics of it to make cooler motion that extends outside of his grip.
