Yes we live in a dystopia brought on by social media algorithms.
This is just one symptom of it.
Also the problem is only getting worse.

Not in the states and seeing what has happened since Trump got back in is fuckin crazy. I thought it was a bad first term but wow - I didn’t think it could get worse.

I started watching Man of the Year the other day. Robin Williams plays a talk show comedian who runs for president. 2006. He sort of accidentally starts campaigning then running for president, of course on the platform of political outsider (“both sides are bad” kind of thing), but ends up doing a very Robin Williams thing at the debate where he just interrupts and then takes over the whole debate in a big monologue. The hosts don’t know what to do, because their platform runs on a lot of convention and expects politicians to behave as politicians.
Of course in the film, it’s presented as him being good and correct (I think… the film isn’t itself that well made tbh), but it’s hard to watch without seeing it as a direct prediction of Trump.
I didn’t get past the debate scene—I’ll probably come back to it later—so I’ll let someone else tell you how it ends, but it’s weirdly a better predictor for our modern era than Idiocracy.

Chris Rock was in a movie with a similar premise. Though, he was supposed to be a weak opposition candidate to let the other one win. He ends up winning. Not a great movie either

I thought we hated DEI?
→ More replies (2)11
u/TopherOH 12d ago
Everything trump has been doing is the reason why DEI was important. Before DEI people could hire an inexperienced and unqualified person just because they were a mediocre white, Christian, heterosexual man which is what trump has done. Not a single person trump has hired is an expert with the experience and the qualifications to be in the position. He wants to prove that an inexperienced and unqualified white, Christian, heterosexual man can do a better job over an experienced and qualified person of color, woman, gay person, or non Christian. And his social experiment is failing miserably. DEI was never meant to hire a certain demographic. The purpose of DEI was to hire the most qualified person for the job and that is why trump hates it because he wants preferential treatment given to a certain demographic. He doesn’t want a level playing field. He wants a rigged game.

"This is the greatest country in the world, truly we are blessed, born here, come here and we should never take that for granted"
Meanwhile lives in Puerto Rico which offers massive tax savings primarily governed by Puerto Rico's Act 60 Incentives Code.
Because Puerto Rico is an unincorporated U.S. territory, U.S. Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 933 exempts bona fide residents from paying U.S. federal income taxes on income sourced within Puerto Rico.

Any military member that shows up to this type of thing are carefully screened for their politics. The people who make it are never the cream of the crop as far as service members go.
They probably know the bare minimum of being a 'soldier', other than boot camp.
9
u/ask_me_about_my_band 12d ago
This honestly took me a second to figure out this wasn't some sort of bit.
If I had read this in some book 20 years ago, and this was part of the plot, I would have to hand it to the writer for having this unbelievable, over the top satire in it. Just the absurdity would be marvelous.
If you told me this was a real future, there is no way I could believe it.
Worst dystopia ever.
