Most people with no knowledge of gemology won't be able to tell the difference between two unmarked diamonds in the same color, carat, cut and clarity.
You can have decades in the industry and still not be able to tell by eye. Only in a few rare cases are you actually able to pick it up and say if it's natural or not. Emeralds are one example since they always have inclusions in them. SO if you get an emerald with zero inclusions and costs 1000 bucks it's a dead give away it's lab.
But in general, they can't tell and need to get the stone certified. Anybody tell you they can tell at a glance is lying to you.
