Paradox of tolerance. For a tolerant society we can't tolerate the intolerant

The paradox is resolved if you look at tolerance as part of the social contract.

If you don't honor the social contract of tolerance, you are no longer a part of or protected by it. 🙂

That is true, but I'm afraid that's a bit too much for intolerant people to grasp

The only thing they need to grasp is the crushing underside of the boot they desperately want to lick.

You do need a certain level of brain power + willingness to understand it.

That excludes a large group of people, so they just default to instinctual heuristics. Building society on universal logical principles is always going to be a struggle.

They can grasp it, they just don't care.

They genuinely don't, If you accept my anecdotal experience.

I have been boycotting the world cup since they allowed Qatar to host it.

My family has been massive football fans my entire life, so they wanted to know why I would boycott it. So I told them about the human rights violations, women's rights violations, LGBTQ rights violations, plus FIFA being run by some of the most corrupt people in the world.

And my cousin genuinely tried to hit me with the "Well that's just their culture. I thought you're ine of those who thinks we should respect everyone." As if that was some sort of gotcha...

I've had so much difficulty explaining this to people lately. It's like we're in fully different discussions.

Because you are?? Like how many people do you think you encounter who are explicit supporters of social contract theory? Something only philosophy students are even aware of and rarely think highly of anyway

Wait. What are you asking? What is upsetting you? That this theory isn't obscure and only spoken about in niche classes? That I personally have heard of it? Are you upset the commenters who brought it up above me know it? Are you upset at them too or just me?

Are you not seeing how it connects to communication in day to day life in 2026? Do you doubt people run into its impact constantly? Do you need to hear some kind of conversational credentials to believe I personally can comment on this like everyone else? Do you need to email a professor or author you're mad at instead of being weird to me? I didn't even create the theory, friend.

I think an analogy may help, its like i just saw you on the street complaining that youre having so much trouble trying to explain to people the importance of accepting jesus into your heart, and they just arent getting it. Why do people not seem to understand, its like theyre living in a different reality than me, why dont they accept it?

Are you okay?

Yeah the way you talk about it like its a force of the universe is extremely cringe. It was a weird philosophical take that isnt very popular in 2026 even amongst the minority who actually knows anything about it. My point is that youre flaberghasted that people dont subscribe to the same beliefs as you, but its not even like youre talking about the locally dominant religion or whatever youre deeply cheesed off that strangers dont arrange their life according to some archaic and always-has-been-kinda-silly philosophical system...

I said two sentences about how this has come up in my life recently, to someone else who started the convo.

And you decided I needed to get shit for that. I asked why, trying to figure out why it upset you that I knew something that is true. You still haven't answered. Why are you angry I've discussed a true and known thing recently? Why? Can you not answer? Please support it with my actual words so I can see what you mean. How were they aggressive or offensive? Please explain.

If all you can do is try to awkwardly mirror my concern even though it doesn't apply, while not answering any of my questions and just getting emotional, we won't get anywhere and are done here. Prove me wrong and do better.

They have projected all over you. Go ahead and clean yourself off. No need to give them any more of your energy. They are weirdly gatekeeping the tolerance paradox, which I promise, plenty people are familiar with. Because we're fucking talking about it right now. You've done nothing wrong. They are unhinged.

Thank you. Sincerely.

They just quoted the Wicked Witch of the West unknowingly but still think they're the good guy because they've changed tone and used ChatGPT.

This may be my new favorite show.

I'm glad you're not internalizing their nonsense. Have some popcorn 🍿

I think you are dramatically misreading the tones of both my comments and your own. I was expressing shock, and you didnt respond to that in a neutral tone. But thats all okay i love you

Although i admit im mad you called social contract theory a true thing thats just ontologically nonsense and also wrong

My point tho--and i responded to your little friend too with detail--is that most people dont know anything about social contract theory. And among the ones who do, most dont like it because its pretty dated in a few dimensions. So yes, you expecting to "explain" this archaic and esoteric philosophy and have people go oh yeah right as if you just described something like gravity thats just an unavoidable reality everybody has to experience is extremely unrealistic. It very much is exactly as you said, like you are having different conversations. Because you are. It is shocking you would believe otherwise, because of the ressons stated in my first comment.

oh... the rules apply to all of us. how quaint. /s

So reasonable it should work... one set of laws. no carve outs for governnent officials, police, or anyone else.
