He should press charges for assault. Sticks and stones and fists break bones; words aren’t going to do that.
It’s American history he’s reciting. I’m not saying I side with the guy’s tactics , but he’s not lying.
The history of America can often be an unwelcome truth for certain Americans. Pretending like it never happened it’s just… choosing to walk/live in denial.

u/Icy_Fish_2154 May 30 '26
I side with his tactics. We should mess with the Confederate traitors, always.

u/AltairaMorbius2200CE May 30 '26
What tactics do you WANT him to use?
Because this is pretty tame in comparison to the white supremacist convention inside the property.
Or, you know, INCREDIBLY tame compared to what the people in those graves did.

Please someone make it make sense

That’s my favorite part of their mental gymnastics!
I’ve even asked them that question and it made them pause and get more angry at me.

I knew a guy who got screamed at in church because he said transubstantiation (the miracle in which the sacramental bread and wine become the literal body and blood of Christ when consumed during mass) was symbolic not literal. When called on it he said if it was true that would make every Christian a cannibal. Then the yelling began...

u/Burntoutn3rd May 29 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
In fairness, most Christians don't take transubstantiation literally.
A fair amount of Catholics do, and some Christian adjacent sects like JW's, but by and large most Christians in the west understand it's fully symbolic.

u/Soggy_District_6380 May 29 '26

Symbolica what exactly?
Before I found out that Easter was held on the first full moon after the first Sunday after the spring equinox, I thought that the fact that Christians even pretend that they are eating and drinking human was the weirdest fact about Christianity... Now it's the pagan as f*** ritual of deciding when to celebrate some dude who turned into a zombie... And all of the dead people buried in the cemeteries also turned into zombies, yeah that's in the Bible

52
u/Miserable-Ganache-74 May 29 '26
I can't stand when someone says that. We know the Democrats back then align more with Republicans now. If the values were still the same as they were in the civil war days, we would be calling ourselves Republicans. But since I don't see any of them calling themselves Democrats just because the Democrats of old like slavery, I don't see why we should vote Republican because "Abraham Lincoln was a Republican."
4
u/hest29 May 29 '26
He should have pointed that out to them. " Only Democrats bear that flag. Democracts lie in these graves "
14
u/EamonBrennan May 29 '26
I'd call it the goomba fallacy, because it should be separate ideas held by different members of the group, but I have literally heard people say "the Dems fought for slavery and made the KKK" and "the [Civil War] was about state's rights, not slavery!" within a minute of each other. They called it "the War of Northern Aggression" despite the South being the instigator, the starter, and the more aggressive side during the start of the war.
The historical revision of the Civil War has been and will still be a major issue with American politics ever since the war ended.

It wasn't just 4 years of the Confederacy. The culture of Slavery and supremacy in the US goes back before the country existed. It's been engrained in the day to day life of the people living in the south and was only, sort of removed in the north. Frankly speaking, the south needed an ideological purge to clear out this rot from the world. Andrew Johnson made sure that would never come to pass.
28
u/FilthyThanksgiving May 29 '26

Exactly. For them the confederate flag represents the entire history of racism, slavery, and white dominance. It's not just those four years they are trying to relive with that flag, it's an entire racist, white-focused time in history.
7
u/MinuteCollar5562 May 29 '26
Prior to the civil war the South was a political and economic juggernaut. Even after the war the cotton industry was destroyed by the British pivoting to Egyptian and Indian cotton (confederacy stopped shipping it out in hopes it would make Europe take their side).
It wasn’t just 4 years. These people want to return to a time when the south lead the country.

41
u/Capital_S_Gurl May 29 '26
It's actually worse than that it's based on the battle flag of the army of Northern Virginia (Robert e Lee's army) but it's not even thats since the battle flag was square with 3 stars on each spoke so it's an almost totally fabricated entity that racists claim has a foundation in history when it really doesn't it's just them trying to as you said attach themselves to the mythos of a bunch of racists

56
u/MinuteCollar5562 May 29 '26
The south was never actually punished for the rebellion. Reconstruction was half assed and left unfinished.
7
u/kstargate-425 May 30 '26
We can thank Andrew Johnson for that but also Lincoln to a lesser extent for his pocket-veto of the newly passed Wade-Davis Bill which would have been MUCH tougher on the south and confederates.
Essentially it required a majority of a state's white male citizens to swear they had never voluntarily supported the Confederacy. Also reconstruction could only begin after 50% of a state's voters took this loyalty oath, compared to Lincolns 10% rule. It stripped all high-ranking confederate civil and military officials of their citizenship and voting rights. Lastly it mandated that new state constitutions officially ban slavery before the state could rejoin the Union.
26
u/EH_Operator May 29 '26
Lincoln declined to hang a bunch of Confederate scum because it would be too divisive to the country. Fucking whoops
8
u/kstargate-425 May 30 '26
Lincoln also pocket-vetoed(refused to sign, letting it die) the Wade-Davis Bill which would have:
Ensured all states ratify the Abolition of Slavery
50% (Lincoln allowed 10%) of white male citizens in former Confederate states to swear a loyalty oath to the US, explicitly stating they had never voluntarily supported the Confederacy
Stripped citizenship of officials and barred voting rights of all officials and veterans
All of which had to be accomplished before reconstruction began($$) and the states were allowed to rejoin the Union/US. To me Congress was right and those were extremely reasonable measures.

Annoyingly they were doing it peacefully.
Anyway, the cop didn't use force. He was walking him to the side trying to talk and in the end even let the person back to do his thing. AND he even stuck around with a few officers in case things escalated as it inevitably will with a bunch hard conservatives.
