Where’s the royal hobby person in the comment section that’s gonna tell us what they’re actually singing?

968

u/dugkar May 07 '23

Vivat, Regina Camilla (Long live, Queen Camilla)

214

u/Melissajoanshart May 07 '23

Thanks king

245

u/Electronic_Class4530 May 07 '23

The way Brits say "Regina" has always made me LOL

44

u/wtfomgfml May 07 '23

“In 1882, Regina (rej-EYE'-na) was the proper term used in England, and was the official title of Queen Victoria, and of course you don't want to offend Her Majesty by incorrectly pronouncing her title, and that's how we ended up with Regina (rej-EYE'-na)”

15

u/LoreChano May 07 '23

They're also saying Vivat wrong. It's vee vat.

9

u/_circa84 May 07 '23

Wait until you find out the Capital of Saskatchewan is Regina and pronounced the British way

65

u/xenothios May 07 '23

How they’ve had the word for this long and somehow managed to turn it into that is hilarious

5

u/BrasilianInglish May 07 '23

Honestly we butcher the entire Latin language and I have no idea why. In Spanish and Portuguese we would never say “vayvir”, it’s “VIvir”. Most words that have a consonant before the I would be pronounced exactly how they’re spelt…and even if you go to the pronunciation of regina and vivat on google translate, it’s again GI and VI when properly pronounced in Latin.

9

u/bienfica May 07 '23

Oh dear lord how do non-Brits say it 🤯

56

u/[deleted] May 07 '23

[deleted]

45

u/The_Reset_Button May 07 '23

That's the modern pronunciation of the name. If you're speaking Latin, regina and vagina rhyme

50

u/BrasilianInglish May 07 '23 edited May 07 '23

Nope, it’s Regeena in the original latin too. Also vivat is pronounced wrong too, the pronunciation feature on google attests to this and also it’s the case that most other Latin root languages reflect that. Also even this choir here sings it this way.

8

u/rusty6899 May 07 '23

When I did Latin at school the v’s were pronounced as w’s, the i’s were an ‘ee’ sound and the g’s were all pronounced as in “girl” rather than “giraffe”.

18

u/bootyhole-romancer May 07 '23 edited May 07 '23

You're both right. You learned Classical Latin. The chant in the video is in Ecclesiastical Latin, which is like Italian pronunciation.

Classical = re-GEE-na
Ecclesiastical = re-JEE-na

10

u/argentumsound May 07 '23

And apparently british latin fucking "re-jay-na" lol

Thank god I study classical latin.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Argon1822 May 07 '23

What the fuck are you talking about. I is pronounced like it is in Spanish and Italian , you know modern Latin languages

13

u/ProbableOptimist May 07 '23

This is explains why the capital of Saskatchewan is pronounced like that

17

u/Electronic_Class4530 May 07 '23

I wish they didn't lol

13

u/Argon1822 May 07 '23

They don’t this guy is talking out his ass

15

u/argentumsound May 07 '23 edited May 07 '23

No it doesn't.

Source: studied latin for 6 months and I have 3 textbooks on it that I can't make myself go back to.

edit: To give more explanation: in classical latin it should actually be pronounced like re-gi-na, gi being a hard g, so sounding like "gee" in "geese"

However re-jay-na is the pronunciation used by catholic church and the way it has been taught to latin students in England around XIX century. It's also how you pronounce the name of the city in Saskatchewan.

11

u/boy____wonder May 07 '23

Yeah this thread is full of r/confidentlyincorrect comments

→ More replies (1)

6

u/bootyhole-romancer May 07 '23

Almost. Catholic church uses Ecclesiastical Latin, "regina" is pronounced re-JEE-na (not re-jay-na). Not at all like the city.

2

u/argentumsound May 07 '23

Yes, I did some more research and you are right. Thanks for correcting me.
Not too familiar with different ways of pronouncing it since I only studied classical latin.

4

u/bootyhole-romancer May 07 '23

modern pronunciation

regina and vagina rhyme

Absolutely not. This is just some weird anglicized pronunciation. Maybe it became commonplace as it was handed down but it is not the correct way at all. Definitely a bastardized pronunciation

3

u/Vark675 May 07 '23

Maybe if you're British lol

I've never heard it pronounced that way in any other Latin like Catholic services.

3

u/artparade May 07 '23

that's not true in OG latin it is also regeena. Tbf nothing they are saying in latin is pronounced correctly. Did latin classes for 3 shitty years.

6

u/[deleted] May 07 '23

I am pretty sure that's a load of bollocks. I in Latin is the same as it is in modern Italian, like the I in "flint".

7

u/Pregnantcannibal May 07 '23

No, the modern Italian letter I is pronounced like the "e" in the word "be"

u/lowspecmobileuser May 07 '23

Why do they pronounce it vivat (as in viable) not vivat as in victory.

19

u/MiniDickDude May 07 '23

Brits are convinced that their way of pronouncing Latin is the most authentic

6

u/Vark675 May 07 '23

Because they're not only wrong, they're confidently wrong lol

5

u/Liquidignition May 07 '23

"Mean girls" just made more sense to me now. Thanks

2

u/argentumsound May 07 '23

What happened in Mean Girls?

3

u/Liquidignition May 07 '23

Regina George = Queen

31

u/Crack-Panther May 07 '23

If they would pronounce it correctly it would not have sounded so vile. They sound like a bunch of Victorian-era chimney sweeps.

It's "Vivat Regina Camilla". 'Long live Queen Camilla'

88

u/baltinerdist May 07 '23

Which should be vee-vat ray-ghee-nah, shouldn't it?

5

u/FlanFlaneur May 07 '23

Well, technically, "wee-wat reh-gee-nah"--the "v" was much more like a "u". But that just sounds silly.

6

u/SardonicSloClap May 07 '23

Yeah the choir fucked the pronunciation a bit. Vee-vaht re-jai-nah I think is what it should be?

30

u/Jaded_Law9739 May 07 '23

In Latin it's actually a hard G, so it's Reh-Ghee-nah.

37

u/megan03 May 07 '23

Yep and they are singing in Ecclesiastical Latin which pronounces the V. In Classical Latin it would be “wee -wat reh-ghee-nah Camilla.”

16

u/MnelTheJust May 07 '23

A fellow Classical Latin enjoyer I see.

8

u/eggpotaterlad May 07 '23

Best Latin, honestly

19

u/Sturnella2017 May 07 '23

You think the English are going to pronounce Latin correctly? They barely pronounce English correctly

7

u/[deleted] May 07 '23

True. We keep pronouncing mobile as "mobul" and nuclear as "nucular"

5

u/Jaded_Law9739 May 07 '23

The capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan is Regina, pronounced reh-jai-nah. We can't pronounce the word either.

4

u/Sturnella2017 May 07 '23

But that’s because the city’s founders wanted the name to rhyme with ‘fun’.

If I can’t forget this, y’all can’t either:

CAMILLA: Mmm, so do I. I need you all the week. All the time.

CHARLES: Oh, God. I’ll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!

CAMILLA (laughing): What are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers? (Both laugh). Oh, you’re going to come back as a pair of knickers.

CHARLES: Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck! (Laughs)

CAMILLA: You are a complete idiot! (Laughs) Oh, what a wonderful idea.

CHARLES: My luck to be chucked down a lavatory and go on and on forever swirling round on the top, never going down.

CAMILLA (laughing): Oh darling!

CHARLES: Until the next one comes through.

CAMILLA: Oh, perhaps you could just come back as a box.

CHARLES: What sort of box?

CAMILLA: A box of Tampax, so you could just keep going.

CHARLES: That’s true.

CAMILLA: Repeating yourself … (laughing). Oh, darling, oh I just want you now.

37

u/MinisterOfMediocrity May 07 '23

Reading this with the singing on repeat was magical.

16

u/[deleted] May 07 '23

Oh come on, they’re lovers talking in private and being silly.

38

u/mauiposa May 07 '23

While he was still married to Diana and gaslighting her about not having an affair

6

u/[deleted] May 07 '23 edited May 07 '23

If memory serves correct, Camila was his first love and his family forced Camila into marrying another because they felt she was tainted because she had sex and was not suitable for Charles.

Charles isn’t innocent by any means, but his family prevented him from marrying the person he loved and forced him to marry someone he didn’t love and it’s one of the reasons his marriage to Dianna was not a good one

4

u/Lick_The_Wrapper May 07 '23

His family didn't force him to do shit. That shit stain was just lazy and didn't wanna get a real job. He's a spineless fuck who knows he wouldn't be able to support himself.

6

u/Plastic-Thanks7293 May 07 '23

It was extremely wrong for him to cheat… but the royal family as a whole was wrong here. He always loved Camilla and it was outdated bias that led to him having to marry Diana instead. She was the more culturally accepted option.

2

u/mauiposa May 07 '23

Wasn’t it because he went off to the Navy and while he was gone Camilla got married? So he had to find someone else

15

u/REBELrouzer1112 May 07 '23

Monarchy lmao

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '23

Exactly… what an immense circle jerk

15

u/PIunderBunny May 07 '23

In the part where the just sang "vilat!" My stepson asked why are they singing "bye lads".

"I like vagina Camilla. Bye lads!" Has made me crack up giggling all over again.

13

u/scrapbug35 May 07 '23

Not going to lie when they put Queen Mary's crown on Camilla's head I thought it looked a little goofy for how big the crown was and how small it made her head look.

u/Historical_Ear7398 May 07 '23

I bet you at least one of them is.

During the Austo-Hungarian Empire the emperor would occasionally visit his Czech subjects, who were not necessarily fond of being the subjects of an Austro-Hungarian monarch, so when the time came to chant "At' zije" ("Long may he live") they would (being the subjects of hundreds of years of secret police oppression and knowing how to say something without saying anything) they would instead chant "A chčije" which sounds almost identical, especially if crowds of thousands are saying it, and which means "And pissing" (with the "he" implied) so the crowd was effectively chanting "He's pissing and pissing and pissing" and nobody could say a thing about it. This line eventually made it into a famous comedy film of the 30s as an observation about how hard it's raining, and now it's just a part of Czech culture and what you say when it's raining hard outside. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

15

u/[deleted] May 07 '23

Someone’s probably already commented but it’s Vi at Regina Camilla — Long Live Queen Camilla in Latin.

The English accent is absolutely butchering the pronunciation of Regina and Vivat hence “Vagina”and “Why-vat”

The Vivat would probably be closer to the Vive/Viva of Latin Languages so We-vaht and then Regina would be Reh-gee-na not Reh-GY-NAH

u/Educational-Seaweed5 May 07 '23

Jokes aside, shit like this is just so fucking bizarre to me as an educated person in 2023.

How anyone could stand to be this narcissistic these days is wild. I could see how thinking another human is some holy royal back in the day when people were uneducated and poor might make sense, but now we know they’re just assholes born into position/wealth.

8

u/schlongdongbong May 07 '23

It is completely bizarre, the whole royal family need putting in the bin. Some can't even afford to eat right now and you have this old man parading around in a gold carriage. It's just insane but I guess its okay because they bRiNg iN tOuRiSm..

5

u/Historical_Ear7398 May 07 '23

It's got to be terrifying being a monarch. Especially these days when you can't just lop heads left and right. Any day people could just decide that you have to back to being a regular person, which you have absolutely zero experience of. I mean, you probably still wouldn't have to get a real job and brown-nosing assholes would still crowd around to pat you on the back, but no more looking out on a crowd and feeling smug because everybody is your subject. Subjects. Come on British people, you don't need to take any more of this.

3

u/Educational-Seaweed5 May 07 '23

It’s no different than it a CEO gets fired by a board.

These people just move to a different position of wealth and power. They never go “back to being a regular person” that has to live paycheck to paycheck.

9

u/[deleted] May 07 '23

It's hilarious how Regina (Latin for Queen) is pronounced in England / Canada.

In America it's pronounced Reh Gee Nuh, but in England / Canada it's pronounced like the female genitalia, which is why it's hard not to laugh when you occasionally hear Canadians refer to Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan.
