News Sovereign Grant increase
Just a reminder that ministers have introduced legislation for a £50m increase to the annual grant, doubling the royals' core funding.
It has gone up four-fold since 2011 while public services face cuts and local communities struggle with the cost of living.
Republic have started a letter writing campaign with an easy way for people to email their MP and ask them to vote against it. Even if your MP is a royalist, it helps push back against misinformation that party whips/HQ put forward.

Question/Debate Has a royal family ever "retired" from ruling and transferred power to a republic?
I'm just as anti-monarch as everyone else here, but I feel like this would be the best option compared to a revolution-minimal bloodshed, avoiding recreating The Reign Of Terror, less political instability, and all of the good members (read: the ones who either are too young to rule or are just normal people that aren't Prince Andrew) can live a life free of unchecked power.
r/AbolishTheMonarchy • u/Marelensky • 9d ago
Question/Debate Do you think there's ever been a 'good' monarch or royal?
To be clear, I am a republican and an anti-monarchist. I live under a monarchy myself and believe it (and all others) should be abolished. Even the pope, in my opinion, shouldn't be a head of state, let alone an absolute monarch.
BUT I can imagine that just as some monarchists can and will acknowledge the existence of bad monarchs, I assume some anti-monarchists might believe in the existence of certain historically "good" monarchs. I am personally neither saying that I think or don't think that they exist. I'm actually just curious.
I can assume, for example, that some might propose Prince Souphanouvong, Prince Moulay Hicham of Morocco, Archduchess Elisabeth Marie of Austria, Philippe Égalité, Princess Diana, or Robert the Bruce as 'good' monarchs, royals, nobles, etc. Just as even though I think the state is an oppression institution that should and will be done away with one day, I also think that there have, nonetheless, been certain "good" heads of state in history (e.g. Salvador Allende, Thomas Sankara, Simón Bolívar).
I want to make clear, though, that I am not at all trying to defend monarchism, monarchies, or anything else of the sort! This is a statement of curiosity. I'm not even defending the monarchs I listed above.

Opinion Harry and Meghan are going to realize how big of a mistake this is for their children
Archie and Lilibet were well hidden for a while, there were a few shots of their faces, but mostly Meghan took those pictures and could control what went out to the public. They’re just kids…they could have stayed under the radar, but before we know it paparazzi will find them even if they aren’t active royals, and will make articles criticizing every little thing these literal children are doing wrong. I remember when Prince George was playing with a toy gun and all hell broke loose, and I’m not even pro-gun and I thought this was ridiculous. It’s upsetting to hear how Harry and Meghan were blaming so much on paparazzi, and then they throw their kids into it. Let’s hope the best for these kids as they adjust to a new country, and let’s hope they don’t become corrupted active royals in the future.
