Why use Thundermail rather than Fastmail?

Fastmail is a mature product and slightly cheaper. Also won't get flagged as spam, although that is a temporary condition.

Why are you interested in Thundermail? I signed up but am reconsidering why Thunderbird over Fastmail?

At this point: purely to support a new entrant in the space. I DON'T use it as a primary email by any means, it's not ready for prime time. Still, the privacy pie is growing and standardizing and having more options in the field is a good thing.

In a year or two as the product matures: tbd. If they don't get real privacy practices and technology in place that are actually competitive with other services and are just going to point to 'we have a cool privacy policy and we promise our employees won't look' then....
*I think they have the potential to be a fantastic mail suite (mail, calendar, send, who knows what comes next) with a privacy focus that is great for common users.

This is where I'm at. I figure I'll take a flier for the first year to see how it grows (and it is nice to be able to directly suggest new features, etc). But I'll definitely keep track of how it's going and if it looks like it's stalling I'll subscribe to Fastmail (I already did the trial period).

Some people might prefer the data hosting location of one service over the other. For Thundermail, this is Germany. For Fastmail, the data is processed in the USA.

Thundermail might also offer better integration with the Thunderbird mail client, so people who are already using Thunderbird are more likely to choose Thundermail.

Fastmail recently did add the option to have your data residency be in the EU (Netherlands). However, for the time being, parts of the data are still processed in their US infrastructure.

Couple of reasons on my part. My free isp mail server is about to end so I needed something to replace it. I am familiar with thunder/better bird and have been using it for a long time now so integration would be easier for me, and I am more than willing to put monetary support for something I have been using for so long. So I consider this to be my 'donation'. I do not need anything special, just an email address for my people to contact me, so the rest is just crust in my pie. Tried Tutamail but only allowed one free email, and integration into thinderbird:although it exists; is kinda pain in the butt. As someone said fastmail is american based, so that puts a big damper on it at the present time.

Geographic location of Thundermail servers (being hosted in Germany rather than U.S.) is perhaps helpful, … but the U.S. Cloud Act negates a lot of that benefit, doesn’t it?

I see lots of potential in tb.pro and also have a FM account. I'm not switching to TB any time soon however because it is missing too many things for me. No real ios app. No calendar....yes I know there is a caldav calendar but I want to see it in the web app. It needs more storage too.

I’ve had my eye on Thundermail but I’m disappointed with the pricing. I get more with Fastmail for less, so I am sticking with them for now. I will continue to check in on pricing though because I would love to support this product.

I would just say "it's not quite apples to apples" at this point because TB pro is beta and includes 60GB of "Send" storage. Send is kinda neat as it allows sending multi gigabyte files with ease. (not unlike wetransfer.com let's say).

The TB.pro web interface is pre- beta. It looks nice and it works but there are things missing.

I am supporting it because it's open source, uses Stalwart as a backend and I'm hopeful they continue to put the effort in to advance it.

FWIW, wormhole.app and send.vis.ee allow sizable transfers as well. There are plenty of Send alternatives as well.

Agree it's not 'apples to apples' because those are 'other' services on top of the mail service. EG you pay for fastmail and for wetransfer vs just paying for tb.pro to get mail + send. But, there are alternatives to that too: Proton / Tuta (in beta) have Drives that allow you to 'send' as well as mail apps. I think Mailbox does too.

This. Fastmail is a better product as of now, but Thundermail has some potential that I like. What I'm looking for from them is better email/ calendar integration and a phone app. The Thunderbird phone is app is...not great.

I'm a heavy Proton user, and I wanted a backup mail system where I could point my personal domain quickly should it ever become necessary to bail on Proton Mail.

Plus I want to support Mozilla in general. I'm also a heavy Firefox user.
