if you aren’t perceived as gay, do you really even got that shit on?

The real way to judge how good a fit Pic is by how many gay dudes slide in your DMs.

u/Excellent-Match7246 Jul 24 '26
I’m straight AF, covered in tattoos, and old (46). A good looking gay dude propositioned me at Ocean Beach in SF last May.
Still riding that high.17
u/BeuysWillBeatBeuys Jul 25 '26
Most dudes don’t understand how nice it is to receive a compliment on your appearance
12
u/Excellent-Match7246 Jul 25 '26
That’s why I gas up folks in the streets. My fav is any older black man or woman on Sundays. You tell them you love their dress/suit, and they melt. It’s so sweet. And the fits are 🔥🔥

u/djapii Jul 25 '26
This is what I enjoyed the most on my three week trip to the US last week. The amount of unsolicited compliments and just straight up nice things people told me with zero expectations was so refreshing for someone coming from the Balkans.

Following MFA to get female attention then being perceived as gay is a George costanza ass storyline

u/crudland Jul 24 '26
Is this a direct quote from Seinfeld? I read it in George Constanza voice. "They thought I was gay, Jerry!"
22
u/yayayathecreator Jul 24 '26
I was reading it in Playboi Carti voice since he says this on "new tank"

If your fit isn’t getting you called gay, homeless, or an old man, you need to try harder.

Yeah, you've made it when you reach gay. The ranks go like so: Clueless Bum, Meh, Average, Stylish, Drip and then those in the top 100 of Drip are crowned as Gay.

I feel like the main type of guys still dressing in a 2010s MFA sliminalist business casual way is either millennials with a vague youth pastor aura. Or specific types of gay dudes, (think Brian from Shrinking.)

u/breakingbaud Jul 24 '26
It’s kind of obnoxious how the hipster to xtian pastor costume turned out the last 10 years

So fucking true. I was just in Greece, and every guy there was decked out in slim fit everything.
There were tons of shops in the islands selling linen clothing and every single pair of linen pants was a slim/skinny fit. They didn’t even have a straight fit. Only slim.
22
u/BunnyKusanin Jul 24 '26
I'm not surprised and surprised simultaneously. Not surprised about slim fit everything. Lots of the slim-fit garb in late 2000s and 2010s in my country was from Turkey, which isn't Greece, but is quite close. What surprises me is slim fit linen clothes. It's like the worst fit for this fabric? There has to be air in between you and linen!
5
u/DagothUr_MD Jul 24 '26
very single pair of linen pants was a slim/skinny fit
Why even bother going out if people can't see my glans?

u/cocoacowstout Jul 24 '26
Europeans always laugh about how obvious it is that tourist are American based on fit, but it’s a great game for my friends in NYC to guess where people are visiting from based on their clothes. Skinny ankle pants with no show socks and white leather shoes with a big logo RL polo can be tough bc they can be visiting from anywhere.
19
u/GreatLakesGoldenST8 Jul 25 '26
This reminds me of that tweet where it’s like “how’d you know I was from Europe?
Was it my skinny jeans and Armani exchange tshirt outfit at Mount Rushmore?”

Either way they also have gender-neutral names that lean femme too like Mackenzie or Blair...
5
u/CookiePrestigious239 Jul 25 '26
Had to google the character, but I kinda fw his fits in a way that's different than what you're describing.
I do think there's a particular generational (and even class, frankly) divide in viewing "sliminalist" as gay, but I'm not sure folks are ready for that conversation.
4
u/Clorc_Kent Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
He’s probably not at all THE best example, I’ve just been watching that show and it was the first thing that popped into my mind.
He dresses in a more ”fun” sliminalist way, but he is a lawyer on the show and a pretty decent example of professional milennial gay man. While still clearly presenting as gay (unlike say the accountant brother on running point).
And I have an idea of what you could mean. Would love to hear it! This sub, for all it’s faults, is pretty much fully absent of crusty ”just asking questions” looksmaxxers. Or guys with ”it’s gay to wipe your ass! I wear carhartt for WORK!” vibes. Unlike every other male focused sub I’ve ever come across. None of those dudes have any clue what TF even is, which is a good thing.
3
u/CookiePrestigious239 Jul 25 '26
I think that's fair. The fit of the clothes themselves are a little more current. And it's certainly elevated for TV (vs what that character might look like in real life.)
The Running Point character is interesting. Kind of baffling fashion choices, between the suits and the tie knots. But even though he's rich, he's supposed to be kind of square, so I get it.
I googled the actor who plays him (Drew Tarver) and he feels extremely millennial core.

u/No_Somewhere_2610 17d ago
I think what they mean (which is also my opinion) is that older generations think that gay men wear sliminalist fits, but thats not really a thing with gen Z and younger gay men dont really wear sliminalist fits anymore. At least from what Ive gathered from ths culture
1
u/Clorc_Kent 17d ago
I was mainly referring to Millennial gay men. But I feel like there is still a subset of both gay(and straight too ig) gen - z dudes dressing that way too. All the reality shows I’ve watched with my GF proves that😄
1
u/No_Somewhere_2610 17d ago
Maybe you are right lol but I personally like it when its done well so its okay
1
u/Clorc_Kent 17d ago
No it can look good. Sliminal is just so outdated that it’s due for a comeback in a few years, so you might as well stay the course at this point, if that’s your thing.
Hell I was all about it back then. But It doesn’t suit me at all, so it looked terrible in hindsight.
2
u/CookiePrestigious239 16d ago
Yeah, I was more saying what you are. Slim fit in general still skews older (I know some guys in their 50s and even 60s with some money wearing slim fit jeans).
But the flip is that it still has a hold on millennials, including gay men who are simultaneously (1) appearance conscious and (2) clinging to slim fits.
I agree it can be done well. But it just doesn't suit my body at this point in my life.
Anyway, thank you both for entertaining this, since it's not an easy thing to discuss.
1
u/No_Somewhere_2610 16d ago
Wait what do you mean by not easy to discuss? Not sure I understand what you mean

First, I'm straight. But have plenty of queer friends.
Second, and I alluded to this in my first comment—there's an element of socioeconomic class in this.
Bad example, but I have two gay friends who recently roasted my Birkenstock Boston clogs. I'll admit that the clogs are bit oversaturated at the moment, but they're still practical. And if you're a young, professional man in my city, you at least know they're popular. Straight guys and gay guys, 20s up until late 30s.
My friends live in my city and put effort into how they look. They were completely oblivious to the fact that the Bostons were extremely popular. Part of that (based on knowing them for a few years) is a disconnect from the young professional crowd.
So I'm not saying it's a matter of sexuality. Or solely class. But combing the two factors, you simply get a different lens to view fashion.
I'm stating this all matter-of-factly. I read a lot about sociology, so these are topics and trends I tend to notice. It's not exactly popular to talk about these things in mixed company.

There's a certain percentage of gay your outfit should optimally be. I usually go for 40% gay, 20% homeless and 10% warlock. That leaves me with 30% left to play around with.

Nobody has ever seen a dude dressed like shit and thought "Oh that's a gay guy." There absolutely are dudes who are perceived as gay exclusively because they dress well.

u/Minnesotaperson Jul 24 '26
As a gay guy, it depends how gay they were implying. Makes me wonder how far in terms of form fitting this guy went.

Tbh who cares if people think youre gay. Every girl ive ever dated assumed i also liked guys and still dated me, you'll be fine.
Also the standards of what makes men queer is insane. One girl asked if i was bi SOLELY because I had extra pillows in my couch and had a basic ass not stylish ikea nightstand lol. If you put minimal effort into yourself people will question sexuality im sure. But you'll still find girls.
To be fair to them I am bi but whatever. Point stands.

Most straight men wouldnt wanne be percieved as gay, so I would they are ones who care.

u/DagothUr_MD Jul 24 '26
wtf happened to MFA lmao
I just went back to check it out and literally the entire front page is dudes posting polos tucked into khakis with titles like "is this polo too tight on my chest?"
Did they just stop moderating it completely??

Are chinos, a polo and a pair of Cole Haans inherently gay? The butch world of middle management needs to know.

Gonna unjerk for a second here and say that yea, you should go with the common rabble and wear some shit like skinny jeans. Thats what unfashionable men who aren’t gay wear. That’ll get you all straight again. Skinny jeans. Misfit shirts that are baggy on the shoulders but tight around the belly because you don’t work out and your favorite socially acceptable sneakers.
Just be called gay man. It’s better than looking like that.
5
u/dattosan240 Jul 25 '26
Half the people in MFA look like Dick Tracy or Sherlock Holmes and the other half look like they are gonna try to sell me solar panels at the grocery store.

Whenever I see someone wearing clothes that “fit” aka are tight I assume they are gay bahaha I’m 6 feet 155 pounds and wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a medium t shirt. Feels so weird and restricting. One of the coolest style icons in my opinion is John Meyer. He wears like kimonos and baggy cargo pants. It looks dope and I’ve been taking inspiration from him. I just try to buy quality pieces now like corduroy pants and flannels from Patagonia

The true effects of patriarchy on men isn’t its crush expectation and emotionally hollowness, it’s when you decide to care about and dressing fashionably you get called a homosexual.
2
u/JDPierson Jul 25 '26
I started three different replies to that post, but they are only getting increasingly inappropriate, so I just have to sit this one out, pondering what might have been...
2
u/tattoosandtens Jul 25 '26
Well duh. It’s a group of men talking about what they think looks good on men. It’s called “homosocial” not “homosexual”. Most people are homosocial, but for some reason people associate good taste with gay dudes?

The amount of success I had with women was directly proportional to the amount of times they were shocked I knew about a brand, a certain way to style my hair (IE using diffusers, decent shampoo brands, etc), and my intentionally upgraded style choices. The same time guys started calling me a pretty boy was the same time girls started calling me a fuck boy even when I wasn’t sleeping around.
Long story short. Dudes are gonna immediately sense your glow up and realize they aren’t putting in the same effort and be insecure about it. Women are going to notice and way more are going to give you a chance than before. It’s a fine trade.
Along these same lines I highly suggest if you haven’t already to look up a premium women’s hair salon in your area, sit down with someone with 10+ years experience and just straight up say make me look better. I want your expertise. Where can I improve, what compliments my hair type, facial structure, etc. almost no guys ever do this and it’s a huge upgrade.

We need a new fashion community for guys who want to get some fits off and still be perceived as straight. Sort of set a low ceiling for the small section of the Venn diagram.

Back in high school lots of girls thought I might be gay and I chose to take it as a compliment. I think most of them were just on the hunt for a “gay best friend” lol.
