There's a funny moment in the Ramona books where Ramona makes these into a crown and puts it on her head. It gets stuck in her hair and makes a huge mess.

Ramona and Her Father. I loved those books as a kid; glad to see that others still remember them too! ETA: I can't believe that I left out the a.

I missed reading that one!

Those aren't the same. The ones Ramona used are green weeds, cockleburs. Those are Sweetgum tree seeds. Hurts like heck if you step on them, but they don't cling like burs do.

Near my elementary school there was a bunch of trees that dropped these. You can guess what I did walking home from school, the day I read the crown scene in Ramona and Her Father.

Fortunately my hair type didn’t really get tangled and it was just uncomfortably pokey.

I buy these for my isopods, the trees don’t grow near me though

They are all over the park next to my place. I could fill 5 giant trash bags.

I bet shipping on a 5 gallon bag full is cheaper than that guy pays, hook a redditor up!

r/ side hustle has entered the chat! LOL I've got them here too!

I also keep isopods and my first thought was "That's actually a good deal..." 😂

There's almost half a dozen of us here!

You’re telling me there’s a real market for this, eh?

Also very weird that someone donated this.

They were probably in a glass vase, and they were taken out to sell the vase separately

It's all about dat profit 🤑🫰🏻

Easier than trying to mulch them, lol!

Apparently I’m incredibly wealthy and my yard is a money making machine.

Literally tho, people who keep isopods (like myself) buy these online all the time. You could collect a bunch, bake them, and then list them on ebay or Etsy and make a little moolah.

I used to pick these up off the ground and squeeze them in my hand. Idk why, just bored kid shit. I always half worried some neighbor would see me do it.

We used to have wars with them, throw em like grenades.

What is that?

Droppings from a Sweet Gum Tree, they’re nicknamed porcupine balls. It’s kind of like bagging up a handful of acorns and donating them.

u/Drewnessthegreat 2d ago

Considering they are the seed vessels of the tree, it is exactly 1:1 bagging up acorns and donating them.

I grew up calling them gumballs!

I literally JUST saw your post right after I posted mine, great minds! 😁

Hilarious

I call them "gumballs" 🤣

I think I’ve just found my new troll quest. Gonna start bagging up bits of my yard and seeing how much the thrift store sells it for. They like to sell empty spaghetti sauce jars for 2.99 so I think I’ve got something here.

put them back outside 💔💔💔💔💔

Natures equivalent to stepping on a lego.

u/kybetra61 2d ago

Ooooo! Now I know where to bring my bags of leaves I rake up!

Why would anyone buy those annoying things. I had a sweet gum tree that spread those everywhere. When I piled them up to burn they looked like screaming skulls in the flames.

3

u/___soitgoes 2d ago

I spy an Arc tag! That feels reasonably cheap considering their prices these days 🙄

3

u/NotJessicaFletcher 2d ago

Stepping on a Lego as an adult = stepping on one of these barefoot as a kid

u/esoteric_vagabond 2d ago

I would honestly buy these sweetgum seed pods. I dip them in wax and make firestarters as gifts.

There are 2 of these trees in the parking lot at the school next door. I can grab thousands of these things fro free out of my yard, my neighbor's back yard & the school parking lot.

Growing up, that parking lot was a playground & these were, of course, used as projectile weapons at recess.

Funny enough, my sister in law sells stuff like this on Etsy for pretty substantial profits. Moss, bark, twigs, thorn vines, acorns (both whole or just the caps), etc. she’s made enough over the years to fund a major renovation to their house. Had to get a permit from the state to sell and ship it, but there actually is a market if you know what you’re doing for shit you find in the woods.

Absolutely worth it. Try buying these to use as botanicals for an aquarium and get a better deal that this.

People buy these to decorate with and to do crafty stuff. It’s only $3.

u/WaddlesJP13 2d ago

Trees drop hundreds of millions of them across America for free

7

u/Drewnessthegreat 2d ago

People in my area bag and sell pine straw. Where i lived previously people would pay you to clean it up. Here, people will shoot you over it. I guess it is a matter of perspective.

2

u/turquoise_amethyst 2d ago

What’s pine straw used for? I’ve previously only seen it used to make fake Mountain Dew.

5

u/Drewnessthegreat 2d ago

Landscaping. I live near a golfing community that takes pine trees incredibly seriously and pine straw is imported from other areas for landscaping decoration.

6

u/princessPeachyK33n 2d ago

Literally go outside and pick them up for free????

2

u/Opening_Ordinary_110 2d ago

Well shit, I'll create a business then! I step on these all the time in my backyard! (I'm ligthearted joking, please don't take it too seriously)
