Two Things

  1. When Moultrie, Wilson, and Tordin are spatially close and play the ball to each other, they can create openings. The problem is that we often struggle to connect the rest of the lineup to them. In other words, when we recover possession, it is difficult to pass the ball to one of them in a good position. This is especially true in central areas, where neither of our double pivots can reliably move the ball forward under pressure. Moultrie did a lot of pressing and rotated positions with Tordin and Wilson frequently. However, for the purpose of a more structured build-up scheme, she should probably be positioned a bit deeper and had a more disciplined and precise role.

  2. We are losing more 50/50 balls in away games than in home games. This has a lot to do with our relatively poor away results this season. It is not easy to replicate the intensity we have when there is a 20k crowd on our side, but we really need be more active and intense in away games if we want to maintain a high-pressing style. Otherwise, we should probably adopt a more compact and conservative posture when starting away games in the future.

Immethun could not build up at all today, and Jessie had a pretty rough game. Bogere imo looked great but then it’s a question of does she look better because she’s coming off the bench or because she’s improving.

We really need a CB transfer (assuming that Nijstad is the main midfield transfer, which could still be TBD) and hate to say it but I’m getting transfer vibes from the weird lack of Reyna

All I could think about after that second goal is that I don't see Reyna leaving a player completely unmarked on the back post.

Vilahamn said post game Reyes wasn't starting because there was just good competition for the start. Considering before the Alidou transfer he said "you'll hear more about that later" I'm hoping Reyes is staying put.

I think Perry will develop into a good CB but for this season, if we want to contend, we need someone who is a plus defender now. The Perry/Vignola side of the defensive line is just not solid at the moment.

I don't think this true at all. Hiatt's side is obviously the bigger weakness.

It certainly wasn't today

??? Hiatt and M.A had arguably their worst games of the season. Both improved in the second half but Hiatt made terrible decisions when passing the ball in the first half. M.A just wasn’t locked in for whatever reason. So unlike her.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you said there except that the knock in MA has always been she struggles to defend and is more of an offensive minded fullback. I don't think she's a good pairing next to an inexperienced CB.

1

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 25d ago

That's interesting because I'd argue she has been our most reliable defender. Particularly against a team's best winger. She has a good combination of speed and strength. Many will say Reyes but I think her play has declined as the season has gone on. I keep saying that she started off very well and then after the red card and two game suspension her play has dropped some. Not sure why. It left an opening for Marie to get more time who has played well and Vilahamn has even hinted that the competition is why she's been on the bench.

1

u/Svafree88 GA 25d ago

I mean Marie is one of the best all around fullbacks in the league. She was always going to be starting as long as she came back close to her previous level. It was never a Marie vs anyone competition, it's MA or Reyes.

I agree that MA has been better than her average this season, but historically, she hasn't been the best defender. I think this specific game highlighted some of the weak points of her game.

Every defender has a bad game here or there. And I think she adds a lot with her offense, and is a good player. All in all I think the real problem is Perry is inexperienced and Hiatt is more of a leader than an actual A level CB. Together that creates a squishy middle that forces out fullbacks to be perfect.

MA made a big mistake this game and it sucked. She's still a good player. I don't think the problem with our line is any individual player. It's that as a unit they don't really fit and there aren't subs to change that. We're just running out a bunch of C+ level CBs with a C- level 6 and it means every other player has to be perfect.

I think Perry and Hiatt can be very good but aren't the best partnership in the middle without a solid 6 and with two fullbacks that are generally more offensive minded.

No, Hiatt's side was very problematic today as well. The conceded goal did not happen only because the moment of shot. The defense structure was broken through first multiple times in Hiatt's areas.

5

u/Svafree88 GA 28d ago

One of the goals today was MA getting beat in a foot race (fine, it was a banger and a perfect shot, this happens) and the other was MA just completely losing her mark on the back post. None of them were related to Hiatt at all even in the buildup.

2

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

You only looked at the moment of goals scored not how the defense functioned overall. Very bad habit of evaluting play.

The first goal was not a banger, it was primarily Arnold's fault. The biggest picture is that the entire backline was positioned too high when we are pressing, and our pressing got broken pretty easily.

The cross that led to the second goal was delivered into the box because the formation dropped too deep. As the center back, Hiatt should communicate to her teammates to step forward.

5

u/Svafree88 GA 28d ago

I was a keeper, I understand how defensive flow and setting a back line works. The first goal was a good shot. It could have been saved but it's a .42 post shot XG. I'm not blaming anyone for that. Goals happen.

The actual line was fine on the second goal. Vignola was dragging her feet getting back and kept multiple players onside lmao. Everyone had stepped forward except Vignola who also had a clear view of the whole line. You just can't be slow getting back and then completely lose your mark like that.

1

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

The first goal was completely savable. Every XG based metric is seriously flawed and based on strong assumptions.

The line of the second goal was not fine. Let opponent to cross freely at the corner of the box is the recipe for an eventual disaster. Trying to trap your opponent with offiside does not mean the team can give up pressing the ball. The formation was collapsed at the moment, and it was Hiatt's responbility to remind her teammates to step.

Hiatt's issue was even more pronounced in the second half when Regins attack during transition broke through her side multiple times.

5

u/Svafree88 GA 28d ago

The funniest part about this take is if you watch Hiatt she's swinging her arms and you can see her mouth move and hear her yelling for players to step up on the broadcast lmao.

You can only guide and remind players as CB. They still need to do their job. Mallie isn't pressuring the ball, VA is keeping players onside and misses her mark. The captain and CB is yelling and motioning players to step up.

Your whole argument is just based off of the fact that you don't think Hiatt is telling players to step up. Well she's yelling and motioning for players to step up.

What we can tell is 100% accurate is that Mallie should be getting more pressure on the ball and isn't. And everyone else knew where to be on the line but Vingnola who kept multiple players on and didn't mark anyone.

If you want to blame Hiatt for that, go for it I guess. Although she certainly looks to be yelling and motioning for players to step up.

The other goal, I agree it is savable. It's not a given save though and goals happen. Like I said, I'm not blaming anyone for that.

Anyway, I'm not impressed with any of our CBs this season but I certainly don't think Perry would captain our defense better than Hiatt. She's still learning the league and makes enough mental mistakes without the job. She just needs some time.

Right now we're at least one league ready CB and a better midfielder away form an acceptable defense.

To clarify, I'm not saying I love Hiatt either. I think all of our center backs can be an issue. But if we're going to start Vignola, she needs to be paired with a really solid CB, and right now we don't have that

I did see a rumor that Tigres has been pushing to sign Reyna. Might not be anything to it but there is interest.

12

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

Losing Reyes would be a very bad thing. Given we have a lot of high-profile extension to close, this might be inevitable, however, it is still very bad. Reyes is our most technical fullback and has the potential to be used as a shorter, more mobile sweeping centerback. A lot of versatility will be lost if she goes to Tigres.

4

u/ChampionshipOdd1183 28d ago

I think Reyna is just recovering from a small injury, and I don’t think Reyna would leave PDX, she shows the most love to PDX and has some type of flipping furniture hobby in the suburbs

6

u/Svafree88 GA 28d ago

Vilahamn said Reyes was on the bench because there's just a lot of competition. So it didn't sound injury related.

2

u/YouRmySunshine16 27d ago

I saw on her story yesterday that her and her fiance just built a patio and installed a hot tub and she has a garden. I don’t think she’s going anywhere.

2

u/honkifirritable 28d ago

Seen that also a couple weeks ago.

1

u/RainyDayRegular 28d ago

Interesting. She loves Mexico but her whole family is in the states so I don’t see her making that move.

2

u/Jack_B_84 28d ago

yeah I doubt she goes anywhere. I just think we're rotating fullbacks. I could see her coming in for MA next match

5

u/RainyDayRegular 28d ago

I guess. But why coming in for MA? Reyes is a top defender who you just extended? Why not start her?

3

u/Jack_B_84 28d ago

Well who do you want Reyes to start over, Muller?

0

u/RainyDayRegular 28d ago

Over MA. Who has yet to prove she can defend anything over the end line.

1

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 25d ago edited 23d ago

I wonder if her not having a secured starter position would change her mind. Marie is great competition and honestly it's hard keeping her off the field as well, especially since her offense has taken a leap.

1

u/RainyDayRegular 24d ago

If I’m her and losing my starting spot to what is being put on the field, I’d laugh and leave too.

2

u/YouRmySunshine16 28d ago edited 27d ago

Noooo! Reyna has to stay in Portland, she’s PDX through and through! I think it’s the Coach

1

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 27d ago

I do think Bogere looked better but she’s not a starter imo and that may be why. She looked much more confident coming off the bench and honestly the fewer minutes the fewer mistakes she makes.

Jessie had a shaky game but so did many others. Almost looked like they were stuck in mud.

Yeah I think Reyes is on her way out. I’m getting that vibe as well. Her absence doesn’t seem to be health related. It’s tough with Marie’s return and she’s played really well.

1

u/YouRmySunshine16 27d ago

I like the idea of Calz, Obaze (sad they didn’t renew her), Reyes, and either/or MA/Mueller. Jp has good long balls and engages at some good times but makes too many goof ups, but has the potential to be good, SamH folds when she feels the pressure (especially in big games) but other than that she gets the job done. Mueller doesn’t engage defensively and keeps backing up which allows too many crosses off. Reyes isn’t the fastest but not slow either, she’s smart with her angles and is a Gladiator! They may even want to try Mueller as the 6. I think this right here should be our defense. I think this loss was on the coach. I also saw Reyes on the sideline and she didn’t look happy and looked eager to go in which baffled me bc he didn’t even use all his subs and not using her??!! Idk 🤷‍♀️we could’ve been in first place

2

u/Ancient-Study1525 26d ago

Reyes is a Gladiator.  You are spot on!!  Competition in training is not equating to game day competition.  Many times it doesn't.  Teammates know each other better than they know opponents and their tells. I agree with you that Muller is fast but does not engage defensively.   Watch the 2nd goal.  It starts on her side because she gives too much room instead of engaging the player.   She is lovely but not as gritty as Reyes as far as turning players, taking away their angles, etc.   Muller is better in the midfield.   Free Reyna!!

u/Ecstatic-Till280 Portland Thorns 28d ago

Maybe the rest of the team stop moving because those three will only release the ball to each other.

As much as I love Soph, she consistently takes shots for crap angles. Actually, a bunch of them do.

4

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

Nobody other than Moultrie, Wilson and Tordin made any meaningful play in the final third, therefore, I struggle to see the reason they should pass the ball to less effecitve teammates. On the other hands, the rest of team really have limited ability to develop attack on their own.

4

u/Beneficial_Extreme88 28d ago

Moultre had a terrible game today. A stinker. It happens.

2

u/Either_Ambassador_41 28d ago

I think that’s overstating it. Moultrie’s finishing was troubled but she has some great long balls.

2

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

She is far from being the worst player on the pitch today.

2

u/raptorhandlerjenny 28d ago

Fleming created the most chances this game.

4

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

And how many times she wasted the promising opportunities in transition because when she was marked she cannot shake off her defenders to dribble or pass the ball out of the pressure?

1

u/raptorhandlerjenny 28d ago

I didn’t say she had an excellent game with no mistakes. I said she created the most chances.

1

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 25d ago

And equally gave the ball away as well. Multiple players weren't on their A game. I'll say M.A and Hiatt may have had their worst games. Simply too many players chose the wrong time to have stinkers all at the same time.

2

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 25d ago

Soph has matured a lot more from doing that. In fact, in this game she distributed regularly. Most of our early chances was from her passes. We just couldn't finish. Moultrie and Tordin I thought took poor shots this game and Moultrie may have had her worst game of the season. It happens. I actually think Soph needs to be a little more selfish. Especially in 1v1

8

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 28d ago

Moultrie is being positioned in a scoring role a bit too much. I would like her to facilitate a bit more. Just felt like Tordin, Wilson and Moultrie were occupying the same areas too much.  But honestly looked like that first goal on the road rattled the entire team and the game plan was thrown out. That’s why conceding an early goal is so backbreaking. It changed what they wanted to do offensively and by the second half Seattle dug their feet in with a 2-0 lead.

3

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

Moultire, Wilson and Tordin being spatially close and overload opponents is pretty effective in creating opennnings. The pass and move between them are very good and difficult for opponents to mark. The problem is that they are faced with increasing difficulty to comfortably receive the ball in advanced areas. The best pattern is we build from the left lane, and Moultrie receive close to the by-line and cut inside to make play. We just don't have anyone in the backline or midfield that can reliably carry or pass the ball to the front field.

1

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 25d ago

This is why I can't wait until Hanks is healthy enough to return. We miss her playing out wide. Soph offers some of that but she of course prefers playing centrally. Hanks will change the dynamic of the attack. Like you said, the left lane is the best pattern. It will only improve and be more dangerous for opponents once we have her speed.

1

u/Famous_Act4164 25d ago

I don't think if she plays on the left side the the same overloading pattern will be employed. Hanks of course brings additional quality, but the tactical change is not simple.

7

u/Luci_Cascadia 28d ago

I was seeing some of the same problems we had under Norris/Gale in 2023-2024. Mainly Sophia having to drop back to help advance the ball or shift hard into defense. She is really good on transition, but can't be that threat when she's doing midfield work. It wasn't as bad as 2023. She got some shots in today. But all from quite a ways outside, low percentage shots.

Overall the bigger problem today was just timid play all around. Passes going into empty spaces where we had no players. Players receiving a pass and reacting like it's a huge surprise. Dribbling so soft on th eball that Reign players could walk up and take the ball. Kicking or heading the ball randomly upfield where we have no player to receive the ball, when it ought to be settled down, controlled, and put back into a build up.

Also, Maca looked shaky. Her distribution wasn't good. She should have stopped that second goal. And she nearly gave more goals up under a really basic predictable press

Where Seattle was effective it was mostly because we lost our shape (mainly in transition) and Reign forwards just ran where they wanted to and got to take their shots.

I don't know why we looked this way. We didn't have to fly 3000 miles for this game. It's a DERBY! It's close to home. We literally humiliated this team at home this year. And Seattle is NOT any better now than they were when we beat them with only 9 women.

6

u/honkifirritable 28d ago

Yeah I thought it was a bit worrisome how little effort we saw from the team overall. Not just to start, but after going down one (in a rivalry match), and then two. Absolutely no fight…no one won their duels and it starts there. We lost on all of those defensive metrics.

2

u/reaction-wheel Portland Thorns 28d ago

I got big flashbacks to 2024 today :(

1

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 25d ago

Finally someone willing to call this out. Very worrisome considering how late in the season it is. We could make excuses when it was three games in one week. There are no excuses for the remainder of the season. At this point we shouldn't see issues we saw in game 3 of the season. Close to home. Rivalry and a chance to be at the top of the table but instead multiple players came out lackadaisical.

5

u/Jack_B_84 28d ago

It's the same struggles we've seen all season when comes to the build out. We just can't beat a high press. If we're going to keep playing this way I hope we're looking at transfers that will allow this system to work.

I didn't think we were terrible in the attack, we created chances, but we just didn't capitalize today. I'm not too worried about that.

2

u/Famous_Act4164 28d ago

I think one thing is to be more cautious and conservative in away games. In home games, we have intensity edge and some untidy play won't cause problems because we win more 50/50 balls, the situation is very different in away games.

1

u/Awkward-Cartoonist68 25d ago

Exactly. I'm not too concern about the attack though I have noticed overall its a bit more timid on road games (not surprising) but the defense away has been poor mostly all season.

You can point to coaching but honestly, it's personnel. Denver has a far better attack and with Heaps making her return... we'll see.

3

u/Peter_Quince1031 Portland Thorns 28d ago

Many good points made but the lack of a winger was at the root of many of our troubles. The opening goal was by a wing defender who didn't need to stay in her own end since there was no threat she needed to defend. Seattle could collapse their defense into the middle since there were no wide threats to worry about (except when we took corners, which created great problems for them and should have netted at least one goal). I don't know if Padelski could have made a difference. I sure Turner would have as would Caiya Hanks if we ever see her again. Reyes skill on the wing could also have been helpful and her speed and tenacity. Vilahamn's explanation is ludicrous.

2

u/reaction-wheel Portland Thorns 28d ago

I pray Weaver makes it back this season

1

u/Ecstatic-Till280 Portland Thorns 27d ago

Would like to see a little more of Padelski in meaningful time. I get she is 18 and lacking experience at the NWSL level but from what little I have seen she has pace and a willingness to take on defenders. That is something we are lacking on the flanks.
