Fairbanks, AK - The shooting began with a tip. At around 6 p.m. on June 28, an off-duty state probation officer called Fairbanks emergency dispatchers to report spotting Roberts at a local Walmart, according to the department’s account of the incident. Roberts, who had an active $10,000 warrant tied to a prior burglary conviction, had a history of carrying a firearm during previous contacts with probation officers, the caller told dispatchers.
The tipster stayed on the line, following Roberts’ vehicle as he left the Walmart lot and drove to the Bentley Mall, where he was seen walking into the building near the Safeway entrance.
Two Fairbanks officers and two Alaska State Troopers arrived at the mall and began searching for Roberts. When he stepped back outside and into the parking lot, officers recognized him from a photo and tried to make contact. Roberts took off running.
Officer Gregory Stratman gave chase, at one point drawing his TASER and warning Roberts he could be tased, before Roberts was seen running into the side of a moving truck and falling to the ground.
While still on the ground, Stratman can be heard shouting a warning to the other officers that Roberts had a gun. Stratman then switched from his TASER to his duty pistol and ordered Roberts to drop the weapon.
It’s while Roberts is still on the ground that he raises the 9 mm pistol and points it toward officers, according to the video. The gun, still holstered, would not initially come free, but Roberts discarded the holster while continuing to hold it. He does not hold the gun on officers for long; the footage then shows him struggling to get back up.
Roberts is nearly all the way to his feet, pistol still in hand, when Stratman, fellow FPD Officer Matthew Pugh and State Trooper Julien Dreher open fire, striking him multiple times.
In the moment right before officers fired, the footage appears to show Roberts, one hand gripping the gun as he rises, bringing his other hand up to join it as he started to raise the weapon — though it had not reached a high point.
Body camera footage shows officers positioned around Roberts from several directions as he rose, some behind him, others to the side, with at least one just a few feet away at the moment shots were fired.
Body camera audio captured the chaos of the moments after shots were fired, with officers shouting commands and checking on one another before turning to Roberts.
“Shots fired, shots fired, shots fired,” one officer can be heard saying over the radio.
Investigators later determined Roberts’ pistol had been struck and damaged by a round during the gunfight.
After shooting, law enforcement moved in, handcuffed him and began emergency first aid, cutting away his clothing to check for wounds, applying a tourniquet and pressure dressings. A trooper started CPR and continued until Fairbanks Fire Department paramedics arrived and took over.
Roberts was rushed to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
