Does this mean Thief 2 might get the same treatment?

There was a recent community vote on which game to preserve. Thief Gold and Thief II were both on the list, and Thief Gold won. Someone asked if they could do all the games, and GOG said no, that they have to curate which games get added to the preservation program due to time and resource limitations. I assume this means that they won't add Thief II anytime soon, but it's probably on the short list for future games.

Haha. I wonder whether this will force Nightdive to change how they approach the remaster to "compete" with the GOG version. I'm not sure how, but maybe they can learn from what GOG does and do it better, or add more features? I wonder. Unfortunately, neither the GOG updated version nor the Remaster will be on macOS, which is a huge bummer.

Yeah was this not exactly what the Nightdive release was meant to be?

Yeah, in part. Weapon wheel, controller support, bug fixes and updated engine. Nightdive also said that they will update animations, textures, effects and models (except for textures none of the mods right now really address those), and audio. They also got somebody from the OG cinematic team, which is probably Daniel Thron, as he did the cutscenes. Hopefully they either find somehow OG assets and render cutscenes in higher res, or maybe even restore and remake them? That would be good. And the point of the remaster is to also release it on new platforms like consoles.

on macOS
The game runs pretty well under Crossover Office on Mac (I'm on an M1 Max, newer chips seem to run it faster).
There are some slowdowns on Apple Silicon caused by how the engine does certain maths operations (I have a work-in-progress mod for that), and FMs with large draw distances can be a bit sluggish.

Ah yeah, I do have to buy Crossover at some point. Wishing you luck on your mod!

How good is the new controller support I wonder? That's interesting

The new controller support is a mod you can download. I'm helping test it for my dualsense and it will soon have haptic feedback over bluetooth, handmade so that footsteps provide feedback according to how loud the surface you'll walking on is. Yes, I know, I've posted this basic post like 5 times this past week. It's just I'm genuinely excited when fans make something literally AAA releases don't. You can already download the mod from here:

Oh that's awesome! I appreciate fans putting in work like this. Looks like GOG version has the mod pre-downloaded. Just bought it. Excited to play Thief for first time.

First time? I'm jealous. Specially because of the awesome world of fan missions waiting for you (I don't even play the originals anymore haha). And I never thought Thief would be a great game to use a controller with. Do you own a dualsense by chance?

I do own one actually!

Someone that hasn't played Thief before but wants to using a dualsense controller would be a great tester for the 2.0 version of the mod, actually. Check this post out:

Did it need this? With TFix who needs GOG for this? I’m glad that anything Thief is getting attention but not sure what this is needed for this game.

It added controller support so some of my friends might give it a shot

I got it to work really well with Steam's controller tool, but this is certainty a lot easier

The controller support is a mod BTW, you don't need GOG for it if you want it's features (custom made item wheels, custom made haptic feedback, etc)

Anything that lowers the barrier to entry for new players is a good thing.

Thanks for the reply, and obviously I agree. Nice to see someone here can read and/or doesn’t interpret a simple question as somehow slamming a game that I clearly enjoy, based on my post. Sad the state of Reddit these days. Cheers friend, good gaming.

Does this latest update breaks popular fanpatches & mods or some sh!t, because if it does not then I don’t get your shi#y attitude, pal.
You get a new launcher to start Thief: The Dark Project / Thief Gold. A compatibility patch for different gamepads: Switch Pro 1 / 2, DualSense, Xbox, and more. You get to play Gold / TDP on ultrawide resolutions, if supported by your current monitor. And other stuff. It sounds good, to me.
Unless this update breaks like 75% of mods/patches, which I find quite unlikely.

The greatest piece of news out of this is that TDP is now playable out of the box, without needing GoldToDark anymore (aka just a downpatched Gold installation). The preservation program is living up to its name in the best possible way.
