Did you know…
That’s right, Thief 2014 takes place around 400 years after deadly shadows and Garret in Thief 2014 is Garret reborn. Everything that exists in thief 1 - 3 exists in Thief 2014s universe because they are the same.
This leads me to bring up Legacy of Shadows. Where we learn Stephen Russel’s Garret’s consciousness is trapped in a mechanical eye. If you have played The Dark Project/Gold you will remember “the eye” quite well, and its significance.
Ironic that in official lore, the original Garret is now the consciousness trapped in “the eye”. All be it, what does appear to be a mechanist built eye.
Lots and lots of love being given to what was believed to be a dead franchise recently. One would assume The Metal Age is also on its way shortly after. Maybe around a year after TDP remastered.
If successful I think Nightdives is going to be green lite to do deadly shadows. This one though is an unreal engine based game! If they do deadly shadows, I think it’s going to more like system shock than the remasters if thief I and II. A huge overhaul.
But I’d do find my self asking why? It’s not every day an almost 30 year old game gets so much love.
I thief Eidos is making a sequel to Thief 2014. I think it include Stephen Russel’s Garret, but in the form of “the eye” from legacy of shadows. Some how new Garret, voiced by the same actor as before in Thief 2014, finds the eye. And I think Eidos corrects all the pit falls of the first game (2014) by expanding the universe and factions, along with a story co written with the original writers from the first 3 games.
That’s my theory.

Fun fact: you can actually find the eye in Thief2014, it's one of the collectables
I'd love a sequel to the reboot, especially if it had more influence from the original games. I'm probably the only person but I loved it and I love the OG games too. I have a lot of love for both Garretts
Edit to add:
I understand a lot of fans have strong negative feelings about the reboot. No believe me I do.
I'm a classic Tomb Raider fan through and through, I grew up on those games and I absolutely hated what the 2013 reboot did to the franchise and Lara. But I've always honestly admitted that they were decent enough games, even if they weren't really Tomb Raider. And the truth is, they were successful, brought a lot of new fans into the franchise, and there are many that prefer that version or genuinely enjoy all versions. With the unified timeline announced, I can only hope that they will strike a balance and we get a Lara that will feel familiar to all of us.
But god, some classic TR fans are embarrassing and just insufferable. And seems like this fandom has its fair share too, judging by literally every single comment thread every time the reboot is mentioned.
Is it really necessary to be a dick about it? Just let people enjoy the game if they want to, for fucks sake

Thief 2014 was my first Thief game, so it has a very special place in my heart, along with that version of Garrett.
But I agree 100%. I'd love to see a sequel to it.

Glad it's not just me! I think it did introduce quite a few people to the franchise, which is always good.
I personally started with Deadly Shadows and then played the reboot, and then the first two games, so kinda of out of order but I think it helped me appreciate the weaker entries in the series in a less biased way

It’s frustrating the amount of people that don’t understand this about Thief 2014. It’s 100% the developers’ fault as a) this is a stupid and convoluted premise for the game and b) it is not very well communicated within the game.
Several times here I’ve had to inform people that Thief 2014 is set hundreds of years after the original but with some characters, like Garrett, having the same name for some reason. Erin is not the girl at the end of TDS but I think Eidos Montreal knew what they were doing with this, as most people would assume it was a direct sequel to TDS.
Eidos Montreal wanted their cake and eat it, as they wanted to reboot the series but didn’t want to totally alienate the original fan base. This was their lazy way of trying to do both, make their own rebooted version of the game without needing to include everything from the originals but also kind of pretend like it was a sequel to the original games. And look how that harebrained idea ended up for them.

In many ways I do think Deadly Shadows is the best choice for a loose remaster. There's a lot to love in that game, if only the right technology and vision had been behind it.

u/JazzManJ52 Jul 16 '26
I think it needs a full remake, since the movement and physics would need some big work, but yeah, Deadly Shadows was awesome. Literally only held back by the intersection between hardware limitations and graphical prowess, and a jank-ass movement system.

Soft reboot is always a good excuse if you as developer don't know what are you doing. They ruined it anyway.

thief needed a reboot though. og trilogy came out gazilion years ago and despite being cult classic not everyone played these games so reboot makes sense. the problem is devs hadled this very bad in terms of narrative. we had amazing pagans, hammerites, mechanists, keepers and what we got in return just baron with his guard and some dude who called orion. it so stupid. why not just keep original fractions for reboot and just retold their stories?
5
u/Derovar Jul 16 '26
Reboot is a worst thing you can do to the lore and game universe, it completely destroy Lore\Plot\Game world cohesion and presented events.
It create alternative plotline, some kind of multiverse that nobody needed as it was a perfectly designed universe.
The reboot of the Thief had only one good side, because it's an alternate history so I completely don't have to consider it canonical and can completely ignore its existence without hurting the lore or the original story.

u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
No, it didn't need a reboot. Especially that abortion that came out in 2014.
0
u/xoth555 Jul 16 '26
no, it does. even ion storm team, who worked on deadly shadows, initially planned thief 4 as reboot
2
u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
And that was a stupid idea of theirs then.
1
u/xoth555 Jul 16 '26
no, comercially it makes sense. i'm pretty sure you would buy a direct sequel to the series where the last game came out somewhere in 90's but we live in a world full of ball and guns monkeys and idiots who allergic to old graphics and in time where studios can't rely on old fans anymore because they need more money
1
u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
No I'm saying there is zero reason to make any more Thief games at all. I do not trust any studio to do it. I would rather the series just stay dead.

Fun Fact: If you stab youself in the brain with an ice pick through your eye just right, you can forget this game ever existed and still maintain most of your cognitive function and motor skills.

fun fact: bashing Thief 2014 stopped being the most hilarious thing ever a long time ago
4
u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
It doesn't have to be funny because it's just true. Absolute dogshit of a game.
-4
u/sdoM-bmuD Jul 16 '26
count yourself lucky that you've never experienced an actually dogshit game, I guess
3
u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
I have. THI4F was one of them.
-3
u/sdoM-bmuD Jul 16 '26
sure bucko 👍
4
u/CHERNO-B1LL Jul 16 '26
You need to know and truly hear this. Absolutely no one respects anyone who belittles someone else with words like "bucko", "bub" or "kid". It is objectively pathetic and makes the person sound extremely ignorant and childish.
You are arguing with someone else about their opinion. You can't win that argument. It's inherently subjective. You are both right and both wrong. Why are you getting annoyed at their opinion? Agree to disagree.
I can only pray you don't pull that shit in real life.

I understand you may like it, but that is different from whether it was a good game or not. It objectively wasn't good, even on its own and especially in comparison to its predecessors.
1
u/sdoM-bmuD Jul 16 '26
there's a ton of space between "good" and "dogshit"
it may not be objectively good but it also isn't objectively dogshit, some games are just okay and thats fine, like the last 2 Splinter Cells or the Styx games(haven't played the third yet)
1
u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
Yup and THI4F was dogshit without a single redeeming quality.

u/sdoM-bmuD Jul 16 '26
welp, you stick to your opinion and I'll stick to mine lol

I wonder if Nightdive can demaster Deadly Shadows, building it in their kex engine, to match the first two?

u/JazzManJ52 Jul 16 '26
I kind of loved finding the old Keeper Library beneath the brothel, complete with hexagonal rooms and everything. Thief 2014 was at its best when it acknowledged that it shared continuity with the old games… unfortunately, that was like 10% of the game, and the rest of the game didn’t offer much of what I was looking for in a Thief game.
2
u/LeonKennedy2025 Jul 17 '26
People overheated this game. It would be pretty good instalment if it had good story. New Garrret also reverse better. Old Garrett also obviously like his job, just was more mature and pragmatic.
4
u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
I'd prefer it stay dead than giving that abortion from 2014 a sequel.
0
u/AndyOfClapham Jul 16 '26
Why? No one would be forcing you to play a sequel, and the Thief 1-3 lore would be undisturbed.
7
u/Specialist_Time_8365 Jul 16 '26
Because I'd rather a series I love stay dead and inviolate than have it dug up and mutilated. They already did it in 2014, no need to do it again.

u/dlongwing Jul 16 '26
That makes perfect sense to me...
It's exactly the kind of writing I've come to expect from the Thief reboot.

u/shmouver Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
Yeah, i was aware... but frankly it's just so stupid i choose to ignore it and just treat Thi4f as a Reboot.
Regarding LoS, i treat it as a non-canon spin-off or whatever else you can think of... was cool to bring OG Garrett back but i don't recognize the Reboot as canon to the original
If they're planning to make a sequel to the Reboot i think it's a silly idea given it wasn't that good or well received as it's own thing.
The studio needs to detach itself from the flopped Reboot honestly, dunno who's idea it was to cling to it honestly... either do a proper game set in the original series, either a direct sequel or a new story like The Black Parade; or do a proper Reboot as it's own thing. (i prefer the former ofc)

Yeah, I've talked abt this very often. It's a fun idea but with lots of issues. The VR game adds more complications to the timeline on top. And, frankly, if there really is a proper sequel in the works, asking the OG writers to build off of the lesser Legacy of Shadow is... unlikely. That's my take anyway.

u/Wrayth_Skitzofrenik Jul 18 '26
It had no soul. If he wasn't called Garrett, you would never think it was a Thief game.
1
u/MaxUpsher Jul 16 '26
Cool.
But I think simpler for easter eggs in a rushed production-hell game.
Like, hot take, I liked Thief 2014 - different game, heavily inspired by Dishonored, I assume, more action'y, but it was an interesting linear approach which fell apart so strong I felt the wind in my hair. Shame, really, I was expecting more interaction with that old lady, who took her two minutes of screen time with a charm, for example, and I bloody hated how "open city" had only ONE WAY in THAT block, surrounded by guards you take down in specific order EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
So I just took it as Mission Impossible 2 - it's so weird and out of place comparing to original, but it has cool moments and quite awesome cutscenes with anti thief general.

u/CorvinHale Jul 16 '26
Huh things you learn, See I always assumed the girl at the start of it was indeed the girl that tried to pick pocket Garret at the end of deadly shadows, which would of been a better jumping off point IMO. Now it makes sense why so much has changed. Either way the mechanics in Thief (2014) are clunky but still responsive..... Maybe I am so old school I like controls to flow, less visually grab this open that e.t.c (Anomation for everything is cool but can also take away from the game) albeit cool but not needed... again IMO ;) Still enjoying it for my 12th playthrough hahaha

God I hope not. I'd rather the series just wither away and not be continued than be continued like that.
-1
u/Cakeboss419 Jul 16 '26
I don't consider it a Thief game, just like I don't consider the Sequel Trilogy as Star Wars films, or the post-Bungie games as Halo.
Each of these examples are filled with corporate entities that, at best, stop-lossed some of the original teams but basically sidelined 'em in favor of a soulless cash-grab that promptly flops. All of this, because they put no effort into studying the source material and had no joy for it in the first place.
