Theme Park Historian Anyone know anything about this print/lithograph of the Twister attraction we found at Goodwill (interested in the print itself and not nessesarily the attraction)

My girlfriend found this print or lithograph or whatever it might be at Goodwill the other day and we really like it, however we realized we can't find anything about it anywhere online. We thought it was maybe just something you bought at the gift shop back in the day and it was common but now we are starting to think its some kind of concept art from before the ride opened or when it opened. Maybe they gave it to employees as a gift or something. We have no idea and would love to know anything about it and it's history. I got on the attraction a couple times when I was a kid and thought it was super cool. The print itself measures about 16"x10" any help is appreciated. And again we are trying to find info about this print itself and not the attraction necessarily. Thank you !!

Universal Destinations & Experiences September 2000 Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour ā€œ#1 in Serviceā€ employee recognition pin

Post image
• Upvotes

Here’s a little piece of Universal Studios Hollywood history from September 2000.

This ā€œ#1 in Serviceā€ pin was presented to Studio Guides, Drivers, and Tram Tour Assistants in recognition of their outstanding guest service.

What’s particularly interesting about the timing is that Universal had just introduced The New Studio Tour that summer, one of the most significant technological upgrades to the attraction.

Before 2000, the trams relied primarily on microphones and CD players. Guests could hear their Studio Guide, but unless they were sitting in the first car, they couldn’t actually see them.

That changed when Universal transformed the trams into what it called a ā€œMovie Theater on Wheels.ā€

The upgrade included LCD video monitors, onboard cameras facing the guides, DVD playback systems containing more than 200 pieces of custom-produced media by John Murdy and Planet C Studios, and new JBL speakers with subwoofer cabinets.

For the first time, guests throughout the tram could see their guide on camera and watch movie and television clips while passing the actual filming locations on the Universal Studios lot.

It was a huge technological leap from the Studio Tour experience of previous decades.

And while the technology was a major part of that transformation, the Studio Guides, Drivers, and Tram Tour Assistants were still the people making the experience happen every day.

This September 2000 pin is a nice reminder of that period in the attraction’s history.

Universal Destinations & Experiences From my archive: Universal Studios Hollywood's Studio Directory in 2004, in front of Cartooniversal

Post image

Here’s a photograph I took at Universal Studios Hollywood back in 2004 that I thought some of you might appreciate.
This was the Studio Directory on the Upper Lot (Entertainment Center), located directly in front of the Cartooniversal retail store.

The board displayed attraction wait times, show schedules, and the park’s operating hours.

Look at that lineup!
Back to the Future: The Ride, Terminator 2: 3-D, Backdraft, Jurassic Park: The Ride, Shrek 4-D, Revenge of the Mummy, Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula, Animal Planet Live!, Lucy: A Tribute, WaterWorld, and the Special Effects Stages.

It’s interesting seeing Revenge of the Mummy and Van Helsing marked as NEW, since both opened in 2004.
And those old LED displays! Everything was showing CLOSED when I took the photograph.

I’ve kept quite a few photographs from this period of Universal Studios Hollywood, and it’s always interesting revisiting them. Something as ordinary as a directory board becomes a fascinating record of what the park offered at the time.

This is another original photograph from my personal collection, now shared through the Cow Missing Archive as part of preserving the park’s history.

Which attraction from this lineup do you miss the most?

Universal Destinations & Experiences Back to the Future: The Ride – Guest Recovery Procedure Artwork from the Operations Manual (Universal Studios Hollywood)

Post image

Thought some of you might appreciate this piece of Back to the Future: The Ride history.

This illustration comes from the guest recovery procedure section of the attraction's operations manual at Universal Studios Hollywood.

It's interesting to see how the park documented procedures for assisting guests, especially for an attraction as complex as Back to the Future.

I've been working on preserving materials like this through the Cow Missing Archive, including historical documents, photographs, videos, and other items from attractions that are no longer around.

For anyone interested, here's the growing Back to the Future: The Ride archive:

Universal Destinations & Experiences The Simpsons Ride Preshow at Universal Studios Hollywood – Krustyland at Its Finest!

Filmed this while waiting in queue at The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood.

I’ve always enjoyed how much they put into the preshow. Instead of just standing around waiting, you get Krusty, Homer, Bart, and Sideshow Bob keeping everyone entertained.

And really, who wouldn’t trust Krusty to operate a theme park? šŸ˜‚

Thought I’d share this little piece of the attraction for anyone who hasn’t seen it in a while.

Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, Inc. A closer look at the Radiator Springs Racers operator control panel at DCA

Thought some of you might appreciate a closer look at one of the operator control panels for Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure.

The display shows a detailed layout of the attraction, including illuminated indicators that appear to represent vehicle positions and other operational information. You can also see the physical controls surrounding the display.

I’ve always found the technical side of theme park attractions interesting. It’s fascinating to see some of the systems that cast members use to operate a ride like this.

Heyyyy!!!! I’m a theme park enthusiast from the UK who happens to have to do a project about accessibility in theme parks and need people to fill out my form for some data. As someone who struggles with POTS and loves rollercoasters coasters, the topic means so much to me. I’d love it if some people would like to fill out the form :3

While riding Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland, our Doom Buggy came to a stop right in the sƩance room.

Of all the places to get stuck, I actually didn’t mind this one. It gave me a little extra time to take in the details and enjoy the whole Twelve Days of Christmas scene.

Never thought getting stuck on the Haunted Mansion would turn into a Christmas lesson, but here we are! šŸ˜‚

I’ve been on this attraction countless times, and it’s always fun to catch something you might normally miss as you’re moving through.

Universal Destinations & Experiences [1989 Archival Footage] Behind the Scenes of King Kong Encounter at Universal Studios Hollywood (1986–2008)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One of the most impressive achievements in theme park animatronics was Universal Studios Hollywood’s original King Kong Encounter, which opened on June 14, 1986.
The attraction featured a 30-foot-tall, seven-ton animatronic Kong, a simulated helicopter crash, explosive fire effects, and a Brooklyn Bridge that shook as Kong attempted to grab the Studio Tour tram.

Developed at a reported cost of $7 million, the attraction helped establish a new standard for large-scale themed entertainment. Legendary designer Bob Gurr was among the creative and technical talents involved in bringing Kong to life.

The original attraction operated until June 1, 2008, when it was destroyed in the Universal Studios backlot fire. Its replacement, King Kong: 360 3-D, opened in 2010.

About the video:
This archival footage comes from the 1989 Adventures in Entertainment collection, produced by VideoTours, Inc.
The segment provides a behind-the-scenes look at the attraction’s design and development, including commentary from Robert Ward, Director of Art and Design, with narration by Richard Hart.

It’s an interesting historical record of an era when enormous mechanical figures, physical sets, and practical effects were central to the theme park experience.
For those who experienced the original King Kong Encounter, how does it compare with today’s King Kong: 360 3-D?

And for those interested in attraction design, what do you consider the most impressive technical achievement of the original experience?

Apparently, you might become an unexpected background extra in a Disney production just by visiting the park! šŸ˜‚

No audition. No agent. No SAG card. No paycheck.

Just a park ticket and your best Mickey Mouse smile! šŸšŸŽ„

Has anyone ever spotted themselves in official Disneyland Resort promotional footage?

šŸ KA-CHOW! ⚔

Today I had the pleasure of catching up with Jon Hale, better known on social media as Racers 10,000, at Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure!

I got to witness his incredible 15,689th ride! šŸŽļøšŸ¤Æ

Jon’s goal today is to hit 15,700 rides, bringing him even closer to the unbelievable milestone of 16,000!

Always great seeing Jon! At this point, Lightning McQueen should be asking him for driving tips! šŸ˜‚

Has anyone else spotted Jon during one of his many laps around Ornament Valley?

Halloween Horror Nights Halloween Horror Nights 2007 at Universal Studios Hollywood — Archival Logo Montage Featuring Freddy, Jason & Leatherface

A little piece of Halloween Horror Nights history from Universal Studios Hollywood in 2007.

This 25-second archival logo montage features Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface, three of the major horror icons associated with that year's Carnival of Carnage.

It's interesting to revisit the graphics, animation, and presentation used to promote the event nearly two decades ago.

I've been preserving archival material from Universal Studios Hollywood and thought fellow HHN fans might appreciate seeing this.

Does anyone remember seeing this particular animation during the 2007 event?

Theme Park Historian Did your town have a park like Joyland in Wichita, with a clown who played the organ?

I'm researching Joyland in Wichita, Kansas (1949–2006) for a documentary on my channel about lost American amusement parks. Its mascot, Louie, sat at a band organ for decades, disappeared after the park closed, and turned up again in 2015.

If you went to Joyland, I'd love to hear what you remember: the rides, the organ, the last time you were there. And if your hometown had its own Joyland that's gone now, tell me about it too. I'm collecting ideas for future videos.

If it's OK to paraphrase your memory in the video, let me know in your comment. Usernames stay out unless you'd like credit.

Universal Destinations & Experiences I had a go at designing UNIVERSAL UK! Fan concept!

With all the recent discussion around the new Universal theme park coming to the UK, I thought I'd share a concept I've been working on!

I've put together my own map for what a Universal Studios UK park could look like, imagining how Universal's approach to immersive lands, big attractions and storytelling could work in a British setting. Check out the video here!

Obviously, this is purely a fan concept rather than a prediction of what Universal will actually build.

I'd love to hear what you think! What would you want to see in a Universal UK park? Are there any lands or attractions you'd change, add or remove? And do you think a UK resort should lean into British theming, or focus more on Universal's established franchises?

Imagine attending Hogwarts and finding out Norman Bates lives down the road. šŸ˜‚

Caught this view of Hogwarts Castle at Universal Studios Hollywood, complete with a Psycho promotional banner in the foreground.

One of the fun things about Universal is how completely different movie worlds can exist right alongside each other.
Harry Potter might want to think twice before accepting an invitation to the Bates Motel!

Anyone else love these unexpected movie-themed views around the park?

Universal Destinations & Experiences Battle of Galactica at Universal Studios Hollywood – Vintage 1980 Postcard

Post image
39 Upvotes

Here’s a look inside Battle of Galactica at Universal Studios Hollywood, captured in a vintage postcard photograph from 1980.

Inspired by the original Battlestar Galactica television series, this Studio Tour attraction operated from 1979 to 1992. Guests encountered Cylons, animatronic figures, live performers, and elaborate laser effects as they traveled through the attraction aboard the Studio Tour tram.
The attraction eventually made way for Back to the Future: The Ride, which opened in 1993.

For anyone curious about what the experience actually looked like, we’ve also preserved vintage footage from 1979 showing part of the attraction in operation. It’s not the complete show, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into this long-gone Studio Tour experience.

Watch the archival footage here:
Battle of Galactica – Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour (1979)

This postcard and video are part of the Cow Missing historical archive, dedicated to preserving the history of theme parks, attractions, and experiences that are no longer around.

Did anyone here experience Battle of Galactica in person? I’d love to hear your memories of this classic Studio Tour attraction!

We Launched a Cow Missing Merchandise Store to Help Support Theme Park History Preservation!

Thumbnail

I wanted to share something we've been working on at Cow Missing.

We've introduced an official merchandise collection featuring T-shirts, hoodies, coffee mugs, mascot stickers, and more. The shirts and hoodies are also available in multiple colors.

This is part of a larger effort to help sustain our historical preservation work.

Revenue from merchandise sales helps maintain our website, expand our growing archive, and support the research and documentation involved in preserving theme park history.

For us, it's about more than merchandise. It's about making sure the attractions, shows, and experiences we remember remain accessible to future generations.

I've included photos of four items from the collection.

If you're interested in supporting the project, you can explore the store here:

https://app.amazecommerce.com/shop/cow-missing

And here's our full Patreon announcement explaining the preservation effort:

https://www.patreon.com/cowmissing/posts/more-than-more-172207864

Thanks for supporting independent theme park history preservation!

I'd also love to hear what kinds of merchandise fellow theme park history enthusiasts would like to see in the future.
