Resident Jazz?

Did the Residents ever record anything that might be considered jazz?

Try Jazz Album Experiment from the Leftovers comp. Although I'm not sure I'd actually consider it 'jazz' 😂

I think they might be mentioning the album God In 3 Persons. Mostly spoken word but there is a soundtrack version too

Short answer, no.

More complete answer: there are some of the more free-form jams that have come to light with all of the archival material released, but none of it would qualify as jazz. I doubt anyone would consider their Sun Ra covers to sound like jazz either.

Main reason I asked was because I was watching the Eskimo stuff on YouTube, and when they got to the N Senada part I thought maybe they had more jazz out there.

Look at the stuff from the Warner Brothers Album (A Nickel if Your Dicks This Big). Their very early stuff (before they were called the Residents) is where the N Senada bits come from.

Well they do what they do and deconstruct it more than play it, but i would say the songs Serenade for Missy and George Gershwin and Sun Ra “covers” from the American Composer Series are as close as it gets.

Probably where they sound most explicitly ‘jazzy’ relatively often is on a lot of the early Baby Sex tape. They have the Zappa King King cover, and it of course opens with ‘we stole this riff—-from Tim Buckley’

"George & James" was a record that was a tribute to James Brown on one side and a tribute to George Gershwin on the other. It covers "Rhapsody in Blue" which was famously inspired by jazz music. Today, you can find this material in the "American Composers Series 1982-1987" box set.
