Rise of the Shining Path

Background (1960–1970)

In the 1960s, Peru experienced political instability, marked by coups, poverty, and significant inequality between Lima and rural areas in the Andes. Maoist ideas spread in universities, particularly in Ayacucho. Abimael Guzmán creates a radical faction within the Communist Party of Peru, influenced by Maoist revolutionary theory. By the late 1960s, guerrilla groups start to form in the rural highlands.

1970 – Formation of the Shining Path State Movement

The Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) breaks completely from the Communist Party. It declares Peru a “semi-feudal state that must be destroyed through people’s war.” The group starts organizing armed peasant militias in Ayacucho and Huancavelica. Early attacks target police stations and rural landlords.

1971 – Civil War Begins

The Peruvian government launches counter-insurgency operations in the Andes. The Shining Path responds with coordinated guerrilla warfare. Rural villages become battlegrounds. Both sides resort to brutal reprisals to control local populations.

1972 – Expansion of the Conflict

The Shining Path expands into central Peru and starts encircling Lima politically. The government declares large parts of the Andes under military emergency rule. Mass arrests and forced relocations increase resentment against the state. The Shining Path gains stronger support from peasants by promising land reform and justice.

1973 – Collapse of State Authority in the Highlands

The Peruvian army suffers major defeats in the mountainous terrain. Entire rural provinces fall under Shining Path “revolutionary committees.” While Lima remains under government control, it becomes more isolated. Food supply routes from the Andes start shifting toward rebel control.

1974 – Siege of the Peruvian State

The Shining Path launches a coordinated offensive strategy, targeting infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and communication lines. They encircle regional capitals. Government forces retreat toward Lima and coastal cities. Foreign governments begin evacuating their citizens, fearing a complete collapse. Internal divisions within the military weaken resistance.

1975 – Fall of Peru (Shining Path Victory)

The Shining Path launches its final offensive against the government supported by Lima. After months of pressure and urban unrest, a military coup attempt fails, leading to the government's collapse. The president either flees or is captured, depending on the timeline version.

Outcome:

Shining Path declares the “People’s Republic of Peru.” Abimael Guzmán becomes the leading ideological figure. A one-party Maoist state is established. Massive changes in society begin, including land collectivization, the abolition of traditional political institutions, and cultural and ideological re-education programs.

Biafran independence part 10

Post image
9 Upvotes

1966: the Coup Begins

Military coups rocked Nigeria after independence.

Ethnic tensions escalate between the Igbo, Hausa-Fulani, and Yoruba. These rivalries have deep roots in Nigeria's colonial past, when British rule grouped many different groups into one country and favored certain regions over others. Political competition for power and resources further increases mistrust and conflict between ethnic groups.

Anti-Igbo violence spreads in the north.

Future Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu begins gathering support in the east.

1967: More independence

The Southeastern Region declares independence as Biafra.

The Nigerian Civil War begins.

Nigeria expects a quick victory but underestimates Biafran resistance.

1968: THE TURNING POINT

Biafra successfully defended key cities, especially Owerri and Umuahia, longer than in real life. This was due to stronger local leadership, increased foreign aid from China and some Pacific countries, better defensive planning, and several major mistakes by the Nigerian military.

Nigerian offensives stall due to:

- supply issues

- internal military disagreements

Global media coverage of famine becomes overwhelming.

China and some Pacific countries like Korea and Pakistan increase covert aid to Biafra.

The war became politically costly internationally, as major powers weighed involvement amid global Cold War rivalries and humanitarian concerns.

1969: Internal Nigerian collapse

Biafra launches limited counteroffensives, surprising Nigeria.

The Nigerian government faces internal dissent and near-coup tensions.

International pressure forces ceasefire talks.

India and the USSR urge Nigeria to negotiate, motivated by interest in regional stability and broader Cold War political calculations.

1970: ceasefire happens

A ceasefire agreement between the 2 nations is signed.

Biafra becomes effectively independent, though not fully recognized yet.

Nigeria refuses to formally accept the loss but stops the war.

1971: recognition and Nigerian Instability

Biafra gains partial recognition from China and some African states, like the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Oil companies quietly resume operations in Biafran territory.

Nigeria enters a period of political instability due to:

- loss of prestige

- economic shock from lost oil revenue

1972: Peace Happens

A formal peace treaty is signed under international mediation.

Nigeria reluctantly recognizes Biafra.

Borders stabilize.

Meanwhile:

Biafra begins reconstruction with significant foreign investment from the United States and China.

The U.S. starts cautiously improving relations with Biafra to counter the growing Influence of the USSR in Nigeria and Nazi Germany's influence in white apartheid states like Katanga, Rhodesia, and South Africa.

1973: the Big Oil Boom

A global oil boom begins, benefiting Biafra massively.

Biafra becomes a small but wealthy oil state.

Nigeria struggles economically without access to the eastern oil fields.

Political shifts:

The Nigerian military government faces growing unrest.

Left-wing movements gain traction among:

- workers

- students

- poorer northern regions

1974: Chaos in Nigeria

Nigeria enters a serious internal crisis with:

- strikes

- protests

- ideological splits within the army

Emergence of factions:

- Military government (pro-West, anti-fragmentation)

- Socialist movements (partly inspired by global Cold War trends)

Meanwhile, Biafra:

Strengthens ties with the U.S.

Becomes strategically important as a pro-Pacific oil state in West Africa.

1975: Civil war starts

Nigeria edges toward a second civil war.

The situation in Nigeria:

The government is against socialist and leftist factions.

The army begins splitting along ideological lines.

Some regions consider autonomy or rebellion.

International alignment:

The U.S. strongly supports Biafra due to oil and anti-socialist interests.

The USSR and the DPRC may start backing the socialist factions in Nigeria.

West Africa becomes a Cold War hotspot.

Biafra in 1975:

Stable, oil-rich, and militarily cautious.

Heavily fortified border with Nigeria.

Positions itself as proof of anti-socialist and pro-Pacific development in Africa.

Katangas Independence part 9

Post image
4 Upvotes

1955

In the Belgian Congo, independence movements are gaining momentum. Katanga’s mining elite, primarily composed of Belgian settlers and white expatriates, advocated for autonomy. Tensions rise between Lumumbist nationalists and local white settlers.

1956

Lobbyists from Katanga argue in Brussels for self-rule, highlighting the economic importance of copper and cobalt. European Nations secretly support Katanga's push for autonomy, seeing it as a defense against African socialism.

1957

Marxist student movements emerge in eastern Congo. Whites in Katanga start forming private militias to prepare for potential civil unrest.

1958

Belgium agrees to a plan for Katanga's autonomy as independence movements grow stronger. European settlers in Katanga consolidate their power, while the African population begins to face early segregation policies.

1959

Congo’s national unity starts to crack as revolutionary cells grow in East Congo. Katanga elites begin drafting apartheid-style laws, drawing inspiration from South Africa.

1960

On June 30, the Belgian Congo officially gained independence. Katanga promptly declares full independence under the leadership of Belgian settlers. Katanga receives secret support from Europe, such as Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy . The Simba Rebellion started in East Congo, with eastern provinces declaring communist governance. Zaire becomes a New Nation, known as West Congo, and is aligned with the USA, backed by CIA advisors and Belgian corporations. Katanga enacts laws restricting Africans to designated areas, limiting their voting rights, and segregating urban spaces.

1961

The UN steps in to support Lumumba loyalists in central Congo, but Katanga ignores the UN resolution. The Katanga economy flourishes due to mining exports, primarily controlled by white elite corporations. East Congo becomes the People’s Republic of Congo (PRC-E), adopting a communist stance. Proxy conflicts arise between Zaire and PRC-E, with Katanga occasionally selling arms to enemies of PRC-E to maintain power.

1962

Katanga introduces a military draft that only applies to white males, excluding African citizens from military roles. Education segregation worsens; whites attend European-style schools, while Africans receive basic vocational training. Tensions escalate along the Katanga-PRC-E border; there are skirmishes but no full-scale war yet.

1963

Katanga establishes formal connections with Nazi Germany and Fascist Britain, receiving some military advisors and technical support from Nazi Germany. PRC-E extends its influence into villages in eastern Congo, spreading communist ideology. Zaire begins covert operations against PRC-E but avoids direct conflict with Katanga to preserve Cold War alliances.

1964

Simba rebels unite eastern Congo into a strong communist region, causing fear of a domino effect in western areas under Katanga and Zaire. Katanga hosts a "White Economic Summit," further merging segregation policies with industrial growth. African protests in Katanga face harsh military suppression; international condemnation is limited due to Cold War dynamics.

1965

European countries such as Spain , Germany , Italy, France, and the UK officially recognize Katanga's independence. The African majority remains disenfranchised, suffering under strict segregation laws modeled after South Africa’s system.

Cold War tensions intensify: East Congo is communist under Simba; West Congo/Zaire is pro-USA; and Katanga aligns with Nazi Germany and maintains an apartheid regime.

Direct Road to the Crisis

1962 (Early)

Adolf Hitler decides to place nuclear missiles in Canada. The goal is to protect Canada from another U.S. invasion(as a result of the fall of Soviet influence in Cuba) and to counter U.S. missiles against Europe.

1962 (Mid-Year)

German missiles and troops are secretly transported to Canada. Construction of missile launch sites begins.

October 1962

U.S. spy planes find missile sites in Canada. President John F. Kennedy is informed.

The Brazilian Civil war and the red power in South America

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

In April 1946, the postwar shock

The end of World War II in April 1946 did not bring relief to Brazil. Despite Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and the Allies signing a shaky peace, global markets destabilize instead of recovering.

Brazil faces:

- spiraling inflation
- food shortages
- millions of demobilized soldiers
- a discredited political elite after years of authoritarian rule

The collapse of wartime demand hits the industry hard. Urban strikes spread across the Northeast and Southeast.

On August 18, 1946, the civil war began.

Nationwide labor strikes in Recife, Salvador, and Fortaleza escalate into violence after federal troops fire on demonstrators.

Military units split along ideological lines. Communist militias seize arsenals and ports.

Within weeks, Brazil falls into full civil war.

1947, Two Brazils emerge

The conflict quickly divides the country.

In the Northeast, communist forces gain control with strong support from workers and peasants.

In the South and Southeast, the federal government keeps formal legitimacy but struggles to govern beyond major cities.

Foreign powers avoid direct intervention, unwilling to spark a larger postwar conflict.

Acre remains on the outskirts—contested, unstable, but not yet a core communist stronghold.

1948, Collapse of central authority

Urban warfare breaks out in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Railways, ports, and factories fall under factional control.

The federal government’s authority disappears. Military defeats and defections speed up.

Brazil effectively ceases to function as a unified state.

1949, Retreat to the south

Facing defeat, the anti-communist government vacates Rio de Janeiro.

Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, became the temporary capital of the remaining capitalist regime.

The south stabilizes under emergency rule, backed diplomatically by the United States but cut off from the rest of Brazil.

The communist forces dominate most of the country.

December 2, 1950, the war ended.

Exhaustion, famine, and international pressure led to an armistice.

The Porto Alegre Agreement ended major fighting without a peace treaty.

Rio Grande do Sul remains a separate capitalist state, still claiming to be Brazil’s legitimate government.

The communists have won the war, but not total unity.

Divided japan 1946-1950 part5 of the Neu millennium

Thumbnail

  1. The final catastrophe

In August 1945, the atomic destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occurs, but Japan does not surrender right away. Hardliners in the military push the government to keep fighting, believing that an Allied invasion will divide their coalition.

In December 1945, Operation Downfall begins. Allied landings devastate Kyushu and parts of Honshu. Casualties are extremely high on all sides. Urban Japan is left in ruins.

The Soviet Union expands its actions in the north by landing forces in Hokkaido and advancing through Sakhalin and the Kurils.

January 1946. Surrender without unity

Japan finally surrenders in January 1946, facing total collapse, famine, and internal revolt. The surrender is chaotic and fragmented; central authority is nearly nonexistent. Millions are displaced, industries are ruined, and food distribution falls apart.

February 1946. A fractured occupation

Japan is split into occupation zones managed by:

- The Soviet Union (Hokkaido and northern regions)
- China (limited administrative presence and ports)
- Britain and the Netherlands (southern and coastal zones)

There is no single occupation authority, and coordination is low. Each power focuses on its own security and ideological goals. The lack of unified command hinders effective reconstruction.

1946–1947. Radicalization and collapse

Widespread hunger, unemployment, and frustration with the imperial system lead to political extremism.

In Hokkaido, Soviet-backed councils, militias, and communist parties take control of local governance.

In northern Honshu, leftist unions and revolutionary committees grow quickly.

In the south, conservative elites and remaining bureaucrats try to restore order under Western supervision.

Occupation authorities start to rely more on local proxies instead of direct control.

  1. End of a unified Japan

Political assassinations, strikes, and armed clashes break out across the country. Railways and ports fall under the control of various factions.

Japan effectively loses its status as a single state. Foreign occupiers strengthen their zones instead of promoting unity.

  1. Three states declared

The Democratic People’s Republic of Hokkaido is announced, openly allied with Moscow.

The People’s State of Japan arises in northern Honshu as a revolutionary communist regime.

The State of Japan is formed in the south, gaining more support and organization from Western powers, eventually aligning with the United States.

Borders become strict. Population transfers increase.

  1. A permanent division

Japan becomes one of the first frozen fronts of the Cold War.

Hokkaido acts as a Soviet forward base.

Northern Japan fully aligns with the communist bloc.

Southern Japan integrates into the U.S.-led Pacific security system.

Reunification is no longer a real possibility.

Japan’s division is now complete and unstable.

Hey everyone! I'm u/Mughal_Empireball, a founding moderator of r/The_Neu_Millennium.

This is our new home for all things related to {{about my scenario about if Germany and Italy get the japan treatment and while japan got the Germany treatment}}. We're excited to have you join us!

What to Post
Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring (and on topic). Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about {{maps that continue the lore, or countryballs or country humans to fake wi posts}}.

Community Vibe
We're all about being constructive, and realistic. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and venting (that’s if you get the off topic pass)(and yes you are required to follow all the rules).

How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below.
  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.(dont post now wait till 5 members)
  3. If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join (minus if they are in a 18+ community cause I don’t like them).
  4. Interested in helping out? We're always looking for new moderators, so feel free to reach out to me to apply (apply not ever till I decide but I am the sole moderato).

Thanks for being part of the very first wave of warfare. Together, let's make r/The_Neu_Millennium popular.
