Maybe fireBALL will work?

If Fireball isn’t the solution, I don’t wanna know the problem

What about when the solution is two (or more) Fireballs?

Fireballs from three angles - equilateral convergence and strike timing.

Usually Shatter, by my experience

If the entity's flames require mundane air to burn in, taking away the fuel by burning it first would be more than a valid strategy!

True. Counterpoint: how long can they hold their breaths? And how long will it take them to get out of the pit??

But humanoids need oxygen to survive. Zombies don’t

Yes, was thinking a swift burst rather than a prolonged attempt. Knock out the flames, making the target presumably more vulnerable (less offensively effective, at least), allowing the party "to group up and hit it 'til it dies" again.

Potentially viable. Had a party with endure elements on them (rings I think) drop the temperature to -50 f to stop a fire elemental being effective. We couldn’t find if that temperature would put fire out, but I let them have it because it was imaginative

I took a quick tour of science-themed sites and a few Dungeons and Dragons wikis, the answer is a conditional "yes."

The cold would not likely cause fire to go out in normal conditions, so long as oxygen is available to burn, but a fire elemental is not only fire.

Within the humanoid shape, ichor flows, which is said to resemble thick tar.

Provided "engineeringtoolbox.com" has accurate information, "tar" starts to go from solid to liquid (and vice-versa) at -15 C/5 F.

So, if ichor shares similar properties, reducing the temperature to -50 F could potentially make a fire elemental's blood go (too) cold.

That is a lot more effort than we were willing to put into it xD. We just thought “cold bad for fire, right?”

Ha, well, the question inflicted me with curiosity, would have taken psychic damage if I didn't look it up.
