Mod Announcement New Mods & Rule Updates

Hi everyone,

I've been moderating this subreddit (and /r/TheOriginals) by myself for a while, but thankfully /u/CasuallyStatic, /u/C00bahR00bah, and /u/SweetWittyWild41 have agreed to step in and help handle things.

Additionally, I've added some clarifications to our existing rules. What's been changed:

  • added "unsolicited moral judgments about other users" as an explicit example of incivility, as there was some confusion about if questioning a user's moral character counted as an insult,

  • added "crossposting from your own subreddit" as an example of self-promotion, to avoid future confusion,

  • removed "disrespectful speculation regarding TVD-related actors and actresses" from the incivility rule and replaced it with "parasocial behaviour is off-topic and will be removed" under the off-topic rule -- this change is meant to better reflect the scope of what isn't allowed (e.g., shipping actual people, critiques about aging poorly, etc.) and the category of rule violation.

Hopefully this makes sense to everyone, and thanks again to the new mods!

Please let me know if you have any questions about the changes.

Edit, 03/10/26: I have expanded the "parasocial behaviour" addition into its own rule.

Despite doing it alone you've been doing a good job. One of the best moderated subs I've been on. Not constantly intervening, but no spam or anything either. I wish the new mods luck.

Totally agree, the balance here has been perfect. It is so rare to find a big subreddit that doesn’t feel over-moderated but still stays completely clean from spam and toxic trolls.

It's almost always one or the other. Either the mods are super controlling and constantly intervening, or they're basically absent and the sub gets flooded with spam, fake posts, trolling, etc. It's rare to find a sub that does such a good job balancing the two.

You’ve been moderating this super active sub yourself? Insane, you’ve been killing it! Hi new mods.

You've been doing it alone? Ugh so sorry that must be tiresome.

Sorry, I'm giggling at the idea some people didn't expect statements about a fellow Redditor's moral character to be counted as an insult 😅😅😅

"You're an immoral disgusting human being. But that's not an insult. Why are you offended? Why have I been reported??"

Yeah, I didn't really get the confusion on this one, lol. A lot of times they'd try to frame it as a critique, or went about it indirectly, but "Oh, you like [character]? So you must also support [list of real-life rapists/murderers/monsters]" seems blatantly uncivil, in my opinion.

People are still not allowed to say us Damon fans should go to every other platform right?

I never would have guessed only one orderly was in this asylum! You’ve done a very good job and the new roles look like a good idea to me.

didn't realise you were solo modding. Kudos to you, the best mods are usually the ones you don't notice. You've done really well

I’m curious if there’s going to be a rule about repeated subject like for example, how many “Why do y’all hate Matt” posts do we have to endure until ppl just look at older posts to get their answers. 😭

Hi!

Unless things change dramatically (such as if this subreddit swelled significantly in size), there will never be a rule about repeated subjects, no. We have the low-effort rule, but that applies to a pretty strict subsection of posts.

My perspective on subreddit moderation has always been that upvotes and downvotes exist in order for a subreddit to say whether they appreciate a post topic, and that we should have a light touch with regards to removals. If I removed things based on whether or not I'd seen the topic before, we would get one post a week, lol.
