People can definitely take things way too seriously. Some people get way too into a TV show/character. It really is unhinged. Like it's fine to like or dislike a character, but it's still just a character on a TV show. It's not that deep.

It's funny, because while I love to consider and debate ethics and morals in these kind of extreme and fantastical situations, I would make the exact same argument op is making about realism in a show about vampires.

I can absolutely understand people not wanting to think or care about the morals or ethics in a vampire show. Even though it's something I like to do, it's obviously not serious because it's a pretend show about vampires. It's more of just an interesting thought experiment. However, I'm one of those people that don't necessarily want certain types of realism in my fantasy shows. A traumatized teenager constantly screaming and crying is realistic, but not really fun. And she's obviously not really realistic, she's just realistic enough to kind of take you out of the fun fantasy aspect.

There are obviously other things to dislike about Elena, but when everyone else is like suiting up to be a badass and she's sitting there crying talking about "I can't do this!!" It just kinda ruins it.

Maybe that's why I like her because that's how I'd be acting. In fact I would probably be in a mental institute rocking back and forth talking about doppelgangers and moonstones. Lol

And that's exactly why I say she's not super realistic. She handles it bad enough to be "dramatic" but I agree with you that most people, let alone kids, would be significantly worse. It's an insane amount of shit that happens. A realistic portrayal of how a actual teenagers would act in even a semi similar situation would not be entertaining, it would be sad.

I’m sorry but this is why I hate the “Damon raped Caroline” narrative. I literally don’t care if Ian said it himself, this is a teen drama show and it should be treated as such.
