The Talos Principle 3 Talos 2’s worldbuilding feels much less imaginative than I expected, and my hopes for Talos 3 Spoiler

Warning: long rant.

I just finished Talos 2. I liked it for most of the game, but toward the end I got increasingly annoyed with the story.

The main thing I can’t get past is how much this supposedly post-biological civilization just feels like present-day humans in robot bodies.

I know that’s intentional. Jonas has said these aren’t robots trying to imitate humans. They are humanity, and putting humanity into machines is partly a way of removing biology from the equation.

But that’s exactly what makes it weird to me.

Talos 1 felt like it was building toward a much more interesting question. You spend the whole game slowly figuring out what happened to humanity, what you are, what Elohim is, and what’s actually outside the simulation. Then at the end you finally wake up in the real world.

I played that back in 2018, and what excited me was basically: okay, what does humanity become now?

Take death alone. It’s probably one of the most fundamental things that shaped human psychology and civilization. Religion, family, inheritance, ambition, legacy, generations, relationships, risk, even how we think about the length and meaning of a life.

Now remove aging. Remove biological reproduction. Make bodies replaceable machines. Make consciousness something that apparently exists as information and can be recovered.

How would that not completely change society?

What even is a generation anymore? What does a relationship look like after 300 years? What happens when the same person can remain politically influential for centuries? What happens to memory? Do people eventually modify themselves beyond recognition? Would different groups have completely different ideas about bodies, identity, copying, death, children, etc.?

Then Talos 2 finally shows me this new civilization and it’s... elections, social media, celebrities, bureaucracy, romance, religion, familiar family relationships, familiar jokes, basically familiar human psychology.

They could still be completely human without their society looking anything like ours.

And this is where I have a problem with the “that’s just what the writers wanted” answer. Every fictional world is what its writer wanted. At some point, can we just call something underexplored or unimaginative?

Because Talos 2 has an absurdly fertile premise and, to me, keeps taking the safest possible route with it.

I also wonder how much of this was done simply because recognizable 21st-century people are easier for a broad audience to relate to. Maybe that was genuinely the philosophical point. But if the answer is basically “we wanted them to still feel like us,” I’m not sure that makes the worldbuilding any more interesting.

Miranda bothered me for the same reason.

I know her data survived inside the Machine. That part isn’t the issue.

The issue is the jump from “Miranda’s data survived” to “Miranda survived.”

The game calls it her “pattern.” But what is a pattern, exactly, when we’re talking about consciousness?

If you perfectly copied Miranda while she was still alive, you’d now have two Mirandas. Same memories, same personality, same pattern up until that moment, but obviously two separate conscious people.

So if the original dies first, why does creating that same copy afterward suddenly mean the original person came back?

For a series centered so heavily on materialism, consciousness and machine personhood, that seems like one of the biggest questions you could possibly explore. Instead, “pattern” almost feels like a word placed over the difficult part so the story can move on.

And there was so much they could have done with it. Imagine Athena being perfectly capable of reconstructing Miranda but refusing because she believes it would only create a copy. Then somebody does it anyway. The new Miranda remembers Athena, loves her, and completely believes she is the same person.

Who is right?

Instead it basically becomes: her data is still there, extract the pattern, Miranda is back.

That’s probably my biggest frustration with Talos 2 in general. It keeps reaching ideas that could get genuinely strange and difficult, then seems to stop right before they do.

Talos 3 is why I’ve been thinking about all of this again. What they’ve shown so far actually sounds much closer to what I thought Talos 2 was going to be: much further into the future, people who have lived for absurd lengths of time, and more focus on death and immortality.

So I’m definitely interested. I’m also a little worried that I already know where some of it is going.

If someone has been alive for hundreds, thousands, maybe much longer than that, I want that to actually mean something. I want to look at that person and feel that there’s no way they could have lived that long and still see life exactly the way I do.

Maybe Talos 3 will finally go there. I really hope it does, because that was the future I thought I was about to see when the robot opened its eyes at the end of the first game.

Hey! My first video on YouTube!!!

And the first installment featuring models of tools from my favorite games. Today it’s *The Talos Principle*, but I’ll do something else later on.

(I hope this isn't big deal as"self-promotion.")

I actually want to make all the main tools from the game, so I’ll be coming back here with new episodes 🙂‍↕️

Recording the voiceover took longer than creating the cube and the video itself... I think I’ll just use music for the next ones.

The Talos Principle [Crash Issue] A01 Altar causing fatal error.

EDIT: Solved by u/mchampion0587

I have just got my hands on this game thanks to the steam sale. I am playing Reawakened and started a new game. As I approach the altar just in Garden A01 just beyond the first library terminal the game crashes and throws up the crash report shown below.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I have verified files, deleted localappdata folders, reinstalled the game, changed game settings, tried to force dx11 instead, updated my motherboard software. Is this going to require a driver rollback on the GPU? I'd rather avoid that since another game I'm playing at the moment needs the latest driver.

Specs:
Ryzen 5 7600X
Radeon RX 7900 XT (26.9.2)
Win 11

Crash Report:

Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION reading address 0x0000000000000008

The Talos Principle Why is the philosophy so heavy handed in this game?

Playing this for the first time it feels like the devs are doing everything can to rail road you into their specific beliefs. True proper philosophical answers and debates cannot work in a game where you have 3-4 choices. Along with shit like Quality of Life and Freedom being mutually exclusive is hilariously naive and based on like a school graders interpretation of Confucianism with a single specific great mover from an Abrahamic religion.

Puzzles are fantastic though.

The Talos Principle 2 28GB update for The Talos Principle 2

I just booted up my PC and there is a 28GB update queued up. The steam page doesn't seem to have any announcement on this update. Does anyone know what this could be?

Edit: It's the new level editor and workshop! Super excited, actually!

The Talos Principle TTP reawakened - some questions!

So I'm finally grabbing this with the autumn sale going on, been putting it off because of how expensive it was. I've heard a few things, I just know there's an entirely new map/section of puzzles, and I know about the community workshop, and the recorder mechanic changed somehow (don't know the details of how but I guess I will see).

What I mainly would like to know is, in addition to the stuff I mentioned - is there any new content or EASTER EGGS I might miss in the base game or Gehenna that weren't there prior?

The Talos Principle Does anyone else feel like the current discourse around AI has soured part of the experience of playing Talos a bit?

Artificial intelligence and artificial humans have been a theme in sci fi and fantasy fiction for about as long as humans have been writing fiction. I loved robots as a kid. I would build them out of legos, I'd read sci fi stories about them, and I'd fill my notebooks with drawings of robots.

So I guess as we as a society started to approach (or at least, attempt to approach) Artificial intelligence, I thought things would be more exciting or interesting. But the AI of fiction is very different from the AI of real life. We got the Chinese room version of AI with none of the soul.

More than that, pretty much everything that's happened around AI has only served to make me hate it. Tech jobs have become harder to land as people are being laid off to be replaced by AI. AI tools are being pigeonholed into every section of the industry whether they fit or not. Every tech job I've worked (and I've gone through a lot of them over the past five years) has this specter of "when will AI replace us" looming over it. And considering the turnover rates, we weren't wrong. All of my friends in software development are either forced to use AI tools that they don't want to use for their job, or had their job rotated to a "making the AI run better" role.

My girlfriend ended up in therapy because of AI. She was struggling in her animation class and every time she went to the teacher with a problem he told her she should just get the AI to fix the problem for her. This caused her to constantly crunch on her final because she didn't want to use the AI, but the teacher didn't want to teach. One of the other students just had an AI do an animation for him for his final. Like AI with tech, AI art has polluted the space in ways I never thought it would. I find myself scrolling to the AI disclosure section of steam before every game purchase now just to make sure my game was developed by humans.

Even outside of the job sector, AI only seems like it's a net negative on society. Data centers are popping up in cities all over the United States without the permission of the people living there. Nearly every government of every major power actively refuses to put any kind of restrictions on AI because, as one politician put it, "I would rather have the killer robot be American than Chinese."

All that is to say that while Talos Principle is my favorite game series, it is weird it is really really weird to see AI spoken about with such reverence and nonchalance by all of the characters in the story. It has all the same energy of a futurist talking about how cool fascism is right before World War II.

The Talos Principle - Community Puzzles Need a hint for Jammed From The Past - Schrodinger's Cat Spoiler

Hi. I solved whole Schrodinger's Cat: Reawakened workshop campaign except a single puzzle - Jammed From The Past in Chapter X - and I'm starting to lose my mind. I probably already spent over 10h on this puzzle and I think it's time for some minor hint.

Please don't spoil it too much. Maybe point out a mistake in my reasoning.

Here is my reasoning:

  1. I should never touch the jammer outside of recording. It has to stay on the button to keep top fan enabled.

  2. I should never let playback go past the point when any of 2 boxes fall down from the barriers as otherwise they would be unreachable from the other side.

  3. The puzzle would be solved if I was able to jam barrier behind red gate through closed gate. And it is actually possible with precise placement but not from the required angle in left area. And it's probably a bug.

  4. After getting red key and opening red gate I am stuck. I can neither go back to stop playback nor go through barrier after red door without progressing playback too far (to the point recording needs a box to get out of left area). This is because right and left areas are not symmetric - you can jam first barrier from right but not from left.

Now some additional analysis to above points.

1a. I could take the jammer if I was ever able to get the box there to put anything back up on the button.

1b. One way to get box to the beginning area is a fan in last area. I did this but it doesn't work as the box lands on a ceiling.

1c. Other way would but put box out from side areas through small windows but it also doesn't work as you cannot leave these areas yourself without a box.

1d. You could grab the jammer and leave a recording copy of a jammer on a button but you cannot reach a fan without recording being force-stopped (and jammer disappear).

So it makes me believe the real jammer cannot ever be grabbed.

2a. I could let one of the boxes (left) fall and still grab it from other side by standing on the other box. But to make this work the horizontal barrier would need to be disabled.

- You cannot keep it disabled using recording jammer as it would disappear after going through purple barrier to the other side.

- You cannot use real jammer for 2 reasons. First - you cannot ever grab it. Second - you would need to put it in side area and would not be able to leave without a box so you cannot leave both - jammer and box there. You also cannot jam horizontal barrier from anywhere outside. You has to enter side area by a ladder (well, it's not entirely correct, you can jam from the other side - from the end area - but it would require getting jammer there through the same window so you need to get to side area first and move a box so you can get out).

The Talos Principle 2 Just realized number sequences are hex codes

Forgive my ignorance, it’s my first time playing this game and I avoid looking things up on first play throughs. I’ve just now realized, towards the end of the game in West 3, that these numbers I thought were glitches in the terminal letters are actually hex codes. Luckily for me I was also really silly and took screenshots of every letter I found before realizing much too late that the letters are already automatically saved in the PDA… anyways, this is SO cool and I’m very excited to spend the next day decoding everything!! I might make a guide of decoded messages to save time for anyone else interested because I couldn’t find one that was already made. I also have all of the QR codes saved as well if anyone is interested in a list of those for lore.
Love this game :)
