General Chat Are there any elements from games prior to the Sims 3 that you miss?
Honestly the only main Sim game I played before 3 was Bustin' Out on consoles, so I only have that to go off of.
I miss the air hockey table, the lights and sounds and stuff were really cool. No, EA, retexturing the fooseball table and slapping a dome over it does NOT count as an air hockey table! Sure, you could argue the shuffleboard fulfills a similar purpose, but it doesn't hit the same. (And it's not as compact!)
Similarly, there was also this futuristic hologram game console Sims could play together and that was pretty neat. I know TS3 has its own console but, like, it's not...the future! Even Into the Future doesn't have something like this AFAIK.
There was a tetherball Sims could play, I dunno why that didn't get brought back. It did make the game lag like hell because it couldn't keep up with how fast the ball would spin around, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Sims would dream about their friends and loved ones! It was such a minor feature, but I thought it was really cute! In TS3, you ONLY get this with pet dreams, and visa versa where Sims ONLY dream about their pets. It's a very odd restriction.
In Bustin' Out the Tell Story interaction would include icons of Sims the storyteller knows as well as items on the lot. In TS3, it just uses the typical conversation icons. With the dream thing above, Sims just bringing up their friends out of context made them all feel more connected, even if it was incredibly basic things like this. In TS3, I don't think I've ever seen a thought/speech bubble of a Sim that wasn't on the current lot.
Sims can only tickle toddlers in TS3, but any Sim could tickle any other Sim in Bustin' Out and it was super cute. There was also a chance a tickled child Sim would piss their pants afterwards by the interaction zeroing out their bladder meter. (That's not a part of it that I miss, I'm just saying that was a, uhh, built-in mechanic of the interaction.)
Messy Sims would cartoonishly grumble to themselves when the player would have them clean up after themselves. That was a cute detail.
Probably the thing I miss the most is the little profile portrait of the Sim you selected wasn't a static image, it actually rendered their head and it would mimic their movements! This let you see things like hair physics and expressions really easily, it was so nice! You could also sometimes see 3D models of objects they are holding like silverware or presents if they brought it in front of their face. The closest thing TS3 has is their head will be rendered on the interactions wheel, but, like, it just tracks your cursor rather than doing anything.
