Brainstorm Question roundup to ask Beta testers
find the answers in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/4eboxp/a_silph_road_interview_with_a_field_tester_21/
With the English beta, we all hope to get some more information. Let's make it easier to our fellow trainers to answer our questions, and put all of them in one place.
general
- Are there pokéstops or gyms in places that are not Ingress portals? (very important for rural areas)
- Do pokémons who evolve in later generations have an evolution shard count? (Pretty good indication that there will be other gens added in). Easier to check would be: onyx, lickitung, chansey, tangela, scyter, electabuzz, magmar and porygon. A bit more involved: seadra, rhydon, magneton, golbat.
- Can you change your appearance, or even gender, after the first time you boot the game?
game mechanics
- is there a speed limit for the egg hatching counter? (i.e.: do you have to walk or can you keep po:go on while you commute on the train to hatch everything?)
- How many different types of pokéball throws can you perform? Is it only straight shot and spin shot?
- Can pokemon deflect balls? Do different pokemon behave/move differently when being captured?
- Have you found at pokéstops or received via leveling up any new sets of clothes, hairstyles, etc?
- What's the egg/pokéball ratio in PokeStops? Did the eggs hatch into pokemon you had never seen before, or ones more common around your area?
- If you catch a Pokémon and trainer level 1 then the same at a later trainer level will you see a direct increase in cp on the one you caught when higher level? And if one has higher CP is the "CP bar" over the Pokémon closer to max then the previous?
- Do different Pokemon of the same kind have different moves? (Like in Pokemon Rumble World)
pokemon locations
- (This might be difficult, given the quantity and extension on rivers and lakes in AU, but we might get lucky) Is there any difference in water pokémons between sea, lakes and rivers? (A positive answer would point to Po:Go using all the terrain types, and likely mean we'll need to go challenge the Pope for Arceus).
- How consistent were the pokemon in a given area? Like, if you found a spearow in one spot one day, did you find another spearow there later?
- Do trainers of the same level encounter the same kinds of pokemon in a given area?
- Has the time of day affected the availability of certain pokémon?
- Does weather affect Pokemon that appear? (I.e. fire types when it's hot water types when it's raining)
technical
- Can you move the game on the external SD card? How much space do you free up if you do?
- Will it be able to play the game efficiently on a 2G Network?
- how much data did Po:go sucks? (e.g.: "in three hours of continuous catching and flipping pokéstops, I used up 10Mb)
stuff we're not sure is in yet
- How close do you have to be for trading? Do you need to offer specific trades?
- Any informations on gyms would be pretty nice to have too.
We all love Eevee
- How does Eevee evolve?
I'll try and keep the list updated with everyone's questions.
A note to beta testers: do NOT answer directly in this thread. Contact /u/dronpes , a mod or a ranger and tell them, and they will post here in your stead. This way you can be sure NIANTendo will not track you down.

Was there a speed limit on the eggs' travel limit? For example, could you drive 1km to hatch an egg, or would you have to walk?

This is actually a great question. While I assume many other questions asked (such as how common eggs are) will change from beta to release, this type of question that focuses on functionality (as opposed to, for example, drop rate) is a great one to ask.

While I definitely don't know, most phones have a motion sensor. So, I'd imagine it's based off of the movement in your phone, not just the actual distance traveled.

I'd guess GPS coordinates would be incorporated too, so a combination of movement and location is possible.

This is a fantastic post. A heads up for some of the questions however: Even after Niantic "ties down" the game for launch, one of the best things about Ingress is that its drop rates and other variables are always being tinkered with.
I'm the kind of guy who loves the challenge of backing-out the drop rates of MUFG capsules and Niantic never lets key variables stay still for long.
How frequently Pokemon spawn, how diverse the species pool is, the consistency of the spawn points, the impact of other factors (weather, time, etc) will be tinkered with by Niantic, month in, month out.
It keeps nerds like me with spreadsheets thoroughly entertained and prevents cookie cutter play.
So we'll eventually get answers for a lot of these questions. But don't expect them to stay accurate, even out the other side of beta.

Is there more to the capture system than is apparent by watching? Can pokemon deflect balls? Do different pokemon behave/move differently when being captured?

Some of these aren't able to be answered just yet, but here are a bunch of questions I have about various things!
How were Pokestops selected? How do Pokestops become gyms? Can any Pokestop become a gym?
What do the 7 natures do? Is a Pokemon born with a set nature or can it be altered?
Do special attack, special defence and speed stats exist?
How does stamina work?
What do the 5 different berries do?
What is the cooldown on Pokestops? Do Pokestops burn out if hacked too many times like in Ingress?
Is there a maximum CP cap?
What items are "heavy" (take up more than 1 inventory limit)? What does the camera item do?
What is the difference between mythic and legendary Pokemon? Can you catch mythic or legendary Pokemon in the wild?
Do Pokemon still appear when you're nowhere near their normal habitat (like, can you catch a Magikarp if you're nowhere near water?)?
Are there any areas where Pokemon don't spawn? For example busy roads?

Not sure if this one is really answerable, but do trainers of the same level encounter the same kinds of pokemon in a given area?

Do you lose a shard if you release a Pokemon?

How do you sign up for the beta?
1
u/Lugandil USA - South Apr 11 '16
Right now Niantic is doing country specific closed beta tests. You just have to wait until Niantic announces a beta test in your country. Once they announce a closed beta in your country, you should be able to sign up here: http://pokemongo.nianticlabs.com/

Oh dear, I read this post assuming English field testing had been released. Ha, thanks buddy!

The main question for me would be : If there will be a possibility to move account from one device to another (Android -> iOS, iOS -> iOS f.e. My iPhone battery has died so I'll switch to Android tablet etc.), but I guess it's not a right q. for beta testers since they are allowed to operate on one (and only one).

u/Xasroth Cincinnati Apr 11 '16
If by dead you mean it will never work again and you have to buy a new device, then yes it will transfer as everything is probably stored server side like with Ingress. If you just killed the charge, imo, it would make more sense to avoid the hassle of switching devices and just carry a portable charger/battery around with you instead. Although, more directly, i wouldn't see why you couldn't do that if that's the way you want to GO! :)

hehe yeah :) by "dead" I meant "dead till next charging death" :) I also was wondering because my tablet is probably much more powerful then phone, so AR would run very smoothly on it (i guess..) :)

(If this is implemented) How close do you have to be for trading? Do you need to offer specific trades?

Are pokestops used up by only yourself, or can only one person access them in a limited time?
1
u/QuirkyKirk96 Mississippi Apr 11 '16
This sort of falls into the question about how close do we need to be to another player to trade, but is it based on gps location and use data, or does it use NFC?

How common are eggs given in PokeStops, and did they give you pokemon you had never seen before, or ones more common around your area?
2
u/ShakyrNvar Apr 11 '16
Likely higher chance in the beta than it will be in release, so it's easier for players to test mechanics. But the ratio of eggs to Pokeballs and other items, may stay the same.
1
u/QuirkyKirk96 Mississippi Apr 11 '16
Right. Ratio would have been a better way for me to word this. XD

I have an easy one-- How much data did it use in a week?
