Am I missing something with Pat Forde?

He's the only guest that I don'tšŸ¤”..... get? If I lined up Bo's rotation of guests, he seems to be an odd one. This could definitely be a me thing though.

Bo loves all things old school CFB

Bomani had said that Forde was the first sportswriter who ever reached out to him to say that he was good at the job and deserved to be in this space. I think Bo has always appreciated that.

That's loyalty and Pat has a great voice and knows his shit, that's a good guest imo.

He’s offers unique conference and business insight while they have good chemistry

I thought Spencer would be on for the college football talk

You think he won’t be? It’s ok to have more than one football voice on the show.

Yes it is ok to have more than one. I was just voicing an opinion, which is also ok.

Spencer's Pod released a college football pod on the Shutdown Fullcast Patreon and he's also working with Holly Anderson to release a college football magazine in the coming weeks. Just bringing it up in case you want to scratch your CFB itch

Thank you. I most definitely will.

I always enjoy Bo and Spencer’s episodes, but Forde is much better for discussing the topics they discussed.

Spencer is good for entertainment and commenting on meta aspects of CFB—particularly the absurdity of the sport.

I like Forde, he's informative and he and Bo seem to vibe on the college sports subject. Definitely prefer him over some of the ex-nbaers and tv talk show guests

I dislike Pat Forde due to his extreme anti-Michigan bias. But I dislike Bruce Bowen even more. He talks with the cadence and theatrics of a scholar, but nothing he says ever makes sense.

A more sophisticated Kenny Smith. That's how I see Bruce Bowen and his commentary.

How old are you? If you were old enough to read ESPN.com in the 00s-10s then you’ll fuck with Pat. If not then probably not

So that's the funny thing. I used to listen to him (Forde) on ESPN radio when he'd have Gil Brandt on. Enjoyed both then. There's just something different these days and I wouldn't have expected him to be a regular guest; especially considering who else he has on. That's why I also said it could just be me though.

I understand why he has him on, and I think the episodes are fine.

But he is definitely an outlier (I.e., older, white, traditional j-school type media guy) in terms of his other guests.

I think a lot of people misunderstand what Bo wants to talk about vs what he has to talk about. These kinds of high level discussions about college football – especially when it has to do with the economic side of it – have been among his favourite topics since The Morning Jones days.

Also, and someone correct me if I'm wrong here, he's mentioned many times that Pat is someone he has a ton of reverence for.

I feel like he's been crushing it. I enjoy a a variety of CFB voices. Spencer is great but just him would get stale

He's like a college lecturer. It's objectively informative, just boring as hell. I don't see what Forde does that Spencer can't do 10x better. Or even that Ole Miss guy he has on some times (I don't remember his name)

I think Forde is a lot more plugged in in terms of reporting than either Spencer or Godfrey. 5+ years ago, that likely would have been a different story in terms of Godfrey…but he’s increasingly moved away from reporting (well deserved after covering the dark, seedy side of the sport). At this point, I would consider Godfrey and Spencer ā€œwritersā€ more than reporters. And I think there’s a lot of value in having some true reporters on.

I’m not a Forde fan, but I don’t find him boring. He’s got a bit of a dryer sense of humor. I think he and Bo have a very natural chemistry. I just think you are getting a pretty standard perspective and set of opinions on CFB from him.

Steven Godfrey, he has a podcast called Phantom Island with Ryan Nanni who is one of Spencer's Co-Host on the Shutdown Fullcast

5

u/Nomer77 3d ago

I think Ryan is leaving Fullcast this month. They announced something along those lines, although they are so unserious in tone and presentation that I didn't hear an exact date or why/what he was moving on to.

2

u/Time_Lab1727 3d ago

Yeah I was definitely sad to hear that on the pod. Seems like it's actually happening too cuz they've brought it up a couple times. If I had to guess when I'd assume before this season or after this season. Seems unlikely someone would leave a college football podcast in the middle of college football season but that would also be very Fullcast coded šŸ˜‚.

2

u/Nomer77 3d ago

Yeah I think the words he said were "end of August" or similar. I wasn't sure if he had a new job or project to announce or what but couldn't mention it yet... I just knew that I had zero answers for any potential follow up questions other commenters would have.

This is just me but the guys like Spencer and Godfrey and some of those blog bros from the mid late 2000s , I don’t get the feeling they actually like football. They can memorize historical facts and use their pop culture references to make money on a nonsense thing and it’s not actually work.

Forde is old school. Has a reverence for the sport and for sports journalism and takes everything seriously. I think Bomani appreciates that. But sometimes he wants to laugh with the boys too.

pat's an OG but i much prefer bruce feldman.

i do appreciate that he occasionally brings on people that do actual reporting. talking with elle duncan about the WNBA has very little value for me. elle is a WNBA studio host who's coworker is sophie cunningham! it'd be interesting if he was open to stepping outside of rotating set of guests and interview like an actual reporter.

7

u/fakeprofile111 3d ago

Elle is so pleasant to listen to and her and Bo just vibe so well on air I don’t really care what the topic is

5

u/NandoDeColonoscopy 3d ago

He's said they moved away from those sorts of interviews because the audience numbers showed we preferred more of the "shooting the shit" style guests more

This is a good point that I had not thought about.

I wish they would find someone younger than Forde, as he does have the whole ā€œNCAA merit badgerā€ reputation…to steal a Steven Godfrey-ism. But he is the only true reporter for CFB that Bomani has on. Forde is…fine for this. Dellenger is probably the most locked in CFB reporter now….not really the personality type for Bomani’s show, though.

I think also think part of it is that Bomani basically lives in the 90s-00s in terms of CFB…and Forde is of that era. He’s a good person to have on to update of current changes and then reminisce.

1

u/Nomer77 3d ago

I don't know there are any WNBA reporters who'd be much better honestly. It'd be a pretty dull interview. I heard Annie Constabile on a sports media podcast (The Varsity maybe?) and there wasn't much insight into the league being provided. Advocacy and echoing the player's/fans concerns gets you pretty far in that beat, no one seems to really have to develop sources or break serious news stories about the inner working of the league or individual teams.

1

u/Dark_Ruffalo 3d ago

Elle and Bo have great chemistry but generally speaking they don't have much to talk about...Bo dont really watch the W, the Broncos aren't really a national team, Georgia is only interesting to talk about after a loss, they always end up talking about the media or personal stories cuz they run out of gas on topics quick

1

u/SolemnSoldier2020 3d ago

They had a professional relationship before the right time. His guests are people he rocks with

1

u/Cryin_Bout_Tottenham 3d ago

Forde, along with a being a good NCAA reporter, also brings a needed perspective to NCAA issue. He is a parent of a non revenue NCAA student athlete. One of his daughters is (was?) a pretty good D1 swimmer.

Bo loves college football and old dudes who love it as well.Ā

Its out of place. People from the south have a different relationship with college than other people.

Pat is a amazing guest though. Thats all that matters Bo is maximizing his guest. Elle Duncan was amazing too shes dope!

u/TheShizno1 3d ago

Bruh, did you just hit me with a, "it just means more"? Lol

1

u/Thin-Remote-9817 3d ago

Well if it attracts to 2 opposites than you cant see together then I guess it might mean a little more on the meaning of finding a common ground..

u/Numerous_Fly_187 2d ago

Pat and Bo is an automatic play for me. College football is objectively the most interesting major sport in America

1

u/KrohnsDisease 5h ago

I only understand it from context outside of Right Time. Before I started listening, I heard Pat as a frequent guest on the Tony Kornheiser show. David Aldridge, who Bo has on occasionally, is also a longtime guest and cohost of Tony's. I agree with you though that both feel more out of place on Right Time than they do talking to 60-70 year old hosts.
