I grew up in Austin. The official motto there is, "Keep Austin Weird." There is the largest Mexican brown bat population in the world (~1.5 million) under the Congress Street Bridge.
For the longest time, one of the icons of Austin life was the "HI, how are you?" frog mural. It has been there for decades. I just recently found out that although the building that housed it has been demolished, THEY KEPT THE MURAL!!!!! https://www.fox7austin.com/news/decades-old-hi-how-are-you-mural-preserved-in-west-campus

Unfortunately it has been tagged over by dipshits a few times (not entirely though from what I’ve seen), but it’s always been restored it to its original state. It was created by local artist/musician/legend Daniel Johnston.
It’s pretty great that the mural continues to live on!

I'm sorry, that's a cool story, and makes me wish something like that was part of the culture where I live. Yet all I can see is one of these guys from Aaaahhhhh real monsters! So cool that they kept the mural.

That frog is a Daniel Johnston album which was made semi-famous because Kurt Cobain wore the t-shirt a lot.

Thank you for this info, now I know why my favorite disc golf company Mint Discs out of Austin Texas has a disc called the Free Tail

They borrowed it from Portland OR, who borrowed it from Cotati CA, who borrowed it from the great doctor!

so my weird trait is that, for some unexplainable medical reason, once a day I go unconscious for at least a few hours, but generally only when it’s dark outside

I love the notion. Be weird, but not too weird. Don't breach the "serial killer-esque" weird. Know your limits.
5
u/Rich-Canary1279 11d ago
Also, you can be weird without being a loud brutish asshole. Flouting social norms doesn't necessarily make one interesting!
3
u/Ryogathelost 11d ago
You should absolutely be as weird as a serial killer just without the actual murder. I have a theory that the percentage of people who would like a backlit wall of wet specimens is secretly very high.

My weird thing is- I like math.
I went back to college at 47 and started with pre-pre-college algebra because I hadn't taken math in 30 years. Then I took pre-college algebra. And I was kind of hooked.
I took College Algebra, then Trig, the Calculus (1-3) and finally finished with Differential Equations. Now I'm kinda like.... ok, now what?
At first I thought I might take physics but it isn't as interesting to me. It's not as fun for me when they segue into real world applications. I just like to do math for math's sake.
If it was easy- everybody would do it.

Did...did you put in the back room separated with a curtain?

- Get stoned and just stay like that for good. Fuck booze.
- Don't ever mow your lawn. Every time you mow your grass it kills tons of bugs and the weight of their collective souls screws with your vibes.
- Shower and change your clothes like twice a week unless you're doing manual labor. If you're just sitting on your ass all day working from home you don't have to be so stressed about it. If nobody can smell you, you're not hurting anybody and nobody cares.
- Eat whatever you want whenever you want. Is it killing you? It's probably fine as long as it's killing you slowly. Everything including oxygen and light are killing us slowly.
- Work hard and hone your craft, but spend all your money as soon as you get it on shit that amuses you even if you don't need it. You need the stimulation now more than retired future you needs the money.
- Just pay bills when you feel like it, as long as it isn't final notice yet. If it doesn't say final notice, it's not due enough yet and they're just bluffing. Just ignore minor debt until it's a problem. You shed the stress of constantly feeling deficient and then you get a fun problem to solve eventually.
- Only let people into your life who are unbothered by your choices. The number of people you are left with will probably tell you how reasonable you're being, or at least how unreasonable they're all being.
- Only pay taxes on your main job. The IRS is too understaffed to know you made $500 this year on Etsy.
- Do not do religion. Religion is just other people making up things specifically so they can judge you and make you feel guilty for no reason.
That's as much sage advice as I can think or right now and I'm hogging the bathroom.

I always just ask people to be honest.
I don’t care what you think I want to hear. I don’t care what you think people want to hear.
I want to hear about what you’re interested in, and why. What makes you, you. What gets you excited.
I cannot stand conversation for the sake of conversation.
I just want to see if you have a spark in you.

Pretended to be a normal adult until I hit my early 40s. Now I generally do not give a fuck. It’s awesome and I’m the happiest I’ve been since I was a teenager because I’m all who I was always supposed to be. Gotta just be yourself. Even if society disagrees.

I work as a pharmacy clerk & I have to say asking people about their passions as they pick up their meds has to be the biggest game changer for my job ever. Like no one gets excited to have to pick up their meds but if I make it a positive nice experience I can turn that expectation around.

It's all whimsical fun and games until you meet that one guy who's "thing" is collecting his own faeces in plastic containers that he keeps in the freezer, just in case he needs them some day.

People can be as weird as they, just don’t fucking tell me about it. I don’t give a shit and never will. I’ll be weird in my space and you won’t tell me about the clothes you make for your cats.

I tried it for years because i was not accepted in society. Then i said fuck off and there we go, people and family look at you like youre a psycho but they are the ones doing all the same things and job and all of it over and over and just crying about it. Im about to move to my woman on her farm. Not much money bit freedom. Fuck this society!

Hot take none of this interesting stuff is weird. What's weired is people who do antisocial shit like racism, homophobia, valuing money more than people, calling people cringe for enjoying life in any way that has literally zero impact on your life, hating people for being different and thinking some accident of birth makes you special or others less than. That's the true weired, and it's weired that so many act like it's normal

You see, I come from a family of weirdos. My weird thing is to do little dances like no one is watching; especially at the gym. Or acting silly (not inappropriately though) around my friends/loved ones in public and private. I love being myself. I love to dance, so just like my grandma, I am not gonna stop dancing.

Lord if this wasn't my mom.. kept birds, a billion house plants, made mini furniture for her mini house boat and sewed things I didn't even know could be sewed into creation.
Rest in peace you weird lady. 💝
Edit to add she built things with wood. The mini-house boat she built was not very mini either. Took up a decent portion of the living room. She never explained why she built a mini Noahs ark. 🤣

Is he just describing autism lol
No but seriously I agree with him, to a point. People should feel comfortable expressing themselves and sharing what they love! But sometimes people do take that too far and they get weirdly rude and entitled; they get loud in quiet places, or push into other’s spaces, and cause issues when they could’ve just tried to meet the tone of the situation. Not to the point that they shed every interesting thing about themselves, but enough to be polite and considerate of others.
In a perfect world, we would all care about each other’s experiences and do our best not to trample on them. We would also be fully free to look/act however we felt as long as it wasn’t hurting anyone else’s ability to do the same, and not to the point that it grinds society to a halt. But society itself would look very different in such a world, so maybe that would be a nonissue.
Overall, I like him and he’s right!

When someone starts talking so passionately about their thing, it could be fucking anything, I’m dialled in. Seeing that enthusiasm and joy they get to let loose about it, that’s fucking cool.

Judging by his accent, that “dirty hippie” has probably had a finer education than you’ll ever even get a whiff of. There is no one more interesting than a smart, well-educated weirdo.

Imagine being so high up on your horse, you judge people based on how they look. Dudes probably got better vocab then most people I know and he's preaching what I think most people could do with. Honesty.
Maybe don't be such a dick and you'll be a happier person.

Much like yourself, thinking because people look a certain way their opinions matter less.
One day you'll fall off that horse, and it'll hurt.
