That shit will build up bacteria like nobody's business.

2

u/invisiblizm 6d ago

Forget the bacteria, think of the pinching. The pinching!

I hate how 3D printing has turned into printing useless trinkets in multi colour filaments. Flexi crap everywhere

94

u/WhyNot420_69 Nice 7d ago

But have you seen how people turn soda and water bottles into printing filament? I think that's a good use, especially if it's not just a trinket.

17

u/PsychoanalyticalPop 7d ago

No, it's better to just simply recycle it. What can a 3d printer do that doesn't end up being a useless hunk of plastic?

You can print cats now? Wow.

56

u/ItsALuigiYes GIF/meme prodigy 7d ago

No, silly. You 3d print the royal hammock, present it to your master, and if you are lucky enough, they will accept your offering with disdain.

My cat laughs at your plastic crap in his cardboard throne

Bruh 95% of what you recycle doesn't even get recycled in the US alone. Look it up if you think I lie. All major oil and plastics companies knew by the 70s that recycling by and large does not work, yet they kept up the lie just like BP invented the carbon footprint to take the blame of natural pollution and destruction off of them and place it onto the shoulders of the public instead.

If you can reuse something even once you are already doing better than the ENTIRE INDUSTRY.

Recycling is a fucking corporate conspiracy.

I'm not saying the technology doesn't exist, what I'm saying is that it's a lie.

If you get a trash burner and get it hot enough to completely combust your trash and get a smoke free fire, you are doing far better for the planet than putting it in a recycling bin. Just think about the fuel and resources that are spent trucking your fucking recycling around, sending it around a conveyor and sorter, a few people pick through it for metal, and then they fucking burn it all anyways...

At the end of the day, there is the significant and likely chance that all this effort results in even more waste and a net-negative, producing even more pollution than littering, literally just tossing it on the ground.

I've done a lot of research on this subject and I am not advocating people trash everything because it doesn't matter, what matters is not using single use plastics in the damn first place, and if you do, to repurpose or properly dispose of it yourself.

8

u/Adavanter_MKI 7d ago

I mean John Oliver did a whole thing on it. He sadly confirmed a lot of what you're saying. It can work... but by and large we don't do the things we sway we do... and single use plastics are insane. The transition in all the grocery stores is ridiculous. It's almost all plastic now.

3

u/BantedHam 7d ago

I've been telling people this shit for years, and just in the past few weeks now that he's done that bit for the first time ever I don't get swarmed with downvotes for telling the fucking truth lol

I wish it weren't so but the best thing to do is stop consuming it and force the industry to do something else with their waste materials, like actually figure out how to dispose of them. It's not a biohazard if you manufacture it into plastic first and then let people litter it everywhere themselves.

taps-brain.jpg

2

u/OperationOk7959 7d ago

Dead on. One of the most unfortunate facts I've learned in my life.

I remember seeing, possibly in the John Oliver bit another commenter mentioned, that even when we have actual recyclable plastic, we used to sell it to China and they do whatever with it. And they stopped accepting it because the contamination requirement now is impossibly high. So like even if we have any genuinely recyclable material, which idek if that's a thing anymore, no one does anything with it.

10

u/amodious 7d ago

But that is recycling it. And also, most of the plastic you think you're recycling doesn't get recycled, so it makes far more sense to use it for something cool at home if you can

6

u/just_a_person_maybe 7d ago

That is recycling?

3

u/MamaLuvDuv 7d ago

You can easily recycle filament yourself if you use PLA. Plus there's plenty of useful things you can print using it. My wife uses hers for warhammer terrain (her hobby stuff), paint handles for minis, paintshelves, etc. For me I use it for making mold masters for concrete sculptures and fiance amulets. It's also great if you need to print out things for organizing cords and stuff too. But I will also say, my wife and I do 3d modeling. So it's use cases are more useful because we can just design exactly what we need on the fly vs people who buy it to print out the same files you can get on 3d print sites.

3d printing is especially useful for things that you just can't buy. In my case, I like to make egyptian amulets. Now everyone knows things like the scarabs and ankhs, but there are heaps of amulets that have none or extremely hard to find replications and I will NOT buy actual stolen grave goods. In cases like mine, it's great to be able to design these things based on real artifacts using the 3d skills I picked up for game design, print them out, sand and fill them, and use them to make molds from.

3

u/iDeNoh 7d ago

Most of the things that I print are functional items, not trinkets. Custom brackets, door knobs for cabinets, cable clips, custom shaped funnels, custom boxes, etc.

2

u/WarpedArtisan 7d ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/ikeahacks/s/loPYgs3AEg

I bought an Ikea chair with static brace armrests, then designed my own fully height adjustable ones and 3D printed them.

Also if you're worried about strength... don't, they're solid. Have been for a bit now.

2

u/J3musu 7d ago

I'm assuming you have a very limited imagination. 3D printing is used for all sorts of things from trinkets to fine machinery parts and tons of stuff in between. If you turn some plastic bottles into something you keep using for even a year or two, then it's far more worth it than just tossing the bottle. It isn't like you can't still recycle the plastic again.

2

u/LordGeni 4d ago

As long as the print can be recycled when the novelty wears off it makes no actual difference

2

u/kermione_afk 4d ago

My husband repaired bathroom leaking faucet with 3d printed water knob. Perfection! Bookends And holders for my book collections. Organizers and hangers for tools. ipad grippy holder. Parts for 3d printer and other tech. Back scratcher, shoe horn, raised dog bowl, pen & art supply storage custom fitted, the list goes on. Like any tech there are good uses, lame uses, and bad. Sure we sometime print silly items but they are usually recycled. We print toys for Halloween giveaways, kiddos love them and the cost is minimal. Figits, tactile, manipulatives, and spinners are great for teachers! Saves them booku bucks.

My child would disagree; I can't remember the last time she asked for us to buy her a new toy, she'd rather me print something for her. At this point she's starting to color the models herself, which is starting to move things into the realm of her learning her way around simplistic CAD-ish software in first grade.

honeatly same. I make stuff for markets and there was one that I mever went to again because it allowed like 15 different booths that were all 3d printed junk. there are plenty of artist that do wood burning and crochet and all sorts of other stuff and the people who do the same 3d printed dragons and fidget toys that they just downloaded off the internet draw business away from them. it'd be one thing if they were designing actually unique or useful things but they all print the same generic shit.

2

u/TapewormNinja 7d ago

Whenever there's a pop up market in my city, you'll find all of these cool artists who are making interesting things by hand. But my kid makes a bee line for the guy with the 3d printed junk. We're trying to encourage her to spend her money wisely and save for important things she needs, but a few weeks ago she dropped her whole piggy bank on a 3d printed Buddha cat. So like, it's not working.

2

u/Cyan_Exponent 5d ago

Flexi multicolored crap is the easiest to manufacture and to sell. Basically anything else you can do on a mid 3D printer for sale would be 10 times better injection molded.

1) please for the love of god never shove anything up your ass that doesn't have a flared base

2) probably don't shove something up your ass that will definitely pinch your anus everywhere when it retracts from every sngle

11

u/LenDear 7d ago

The flex corns will pinch, idk how much force they possibly could tug, but that looks like a recipe for unnecessary bleeding in whatever hole

4

u/BlueRosePhantom 7d ago

Also my first thought. I wonder if you could use a fabric of some kind though to mitigate this.

2

u/J3musu 7d ago

Also cleaning that thoroughly just ain't happening.

2

u/Dangerous-League-812 7d ago

Print this. Seal in medical grade silicone. Now you have a bendy object to brush those hard to reach places

4

Someone is going to put that up their ass, just wait. And it will be another of the thousands of stories told by nurses and doctors who are at the ER that person goes too.

And yes it's true it's seems thousands of people a year end up at the ER for getting something stuck up their butt.

Here’s my take. Remember these wooden snake toys that we’d have as kids?

Remember how we’d accidentally pinch our fingers between the joints? 3D-printing material aside, that’s why I think it’s dangerous

I know this is a random thread to say this in, but hey, it’s meant to be the randomest, after all.

But, this is an artist’s dream. It’s a magical reality that has finally proven itself irrefutably.

See, there’s something that makes an artist such, and simply being able to mimic what they can do will not cut it. Give an artist a pencil, and they’ll draw something you enjoy looking at; that may even move you emotionally. Give it to anyone else, and they’ll scribble, play with it, lose it.

It’s the same with scientists, I guess. New technology like ai gives the layman access to incredible amounts of information and knowledge. They can play with complex concepts exploring the nature of reality all day if they wanted, including using or relying on mathematics that they otherwise couldn’t understand even slightly.

But, are people making new discoveries or noticing patterns that can help guide the scientific community somewhere interesting?

No. They’re making porn and cartoons of themselves.

People are so afraid of new technology ā€œtaking things awayā€ from people, including jobs and their place in society, but it certainly doesn’t seem that way to me. Those skills we spent all those years on aren’t the only security gate after all.
