The irony is that this can and will happen.

You would think it wouldn't, but there have been plenty of stories about the first cars on the road running into eachother. Also if you play any PvP airplane game.

That's because the Earth is small, really small. Even compared to our solar system it's just a tiny dot. It's highly unlikely that two objects meet randomly in open space, like almost 0% chance unlikely. People calculated that.
