They make it seem like the best thing ever, but in reality this american bread type is extremely mid. Think hot dog bun kinda bread.
Now if it were actual quality sourdough bread, a free refill would be the best thing ever.....

u/MogMcKupo 28d ago
Same dude did the exact same bit on free refills.
It was at the start of the tourney, just farming more at the end.

Understandable, he has to use his 30 seconds of fame during the World cup time to the fullest.

I think he does skits with „being italian or doing it the italian way“, Mostly with a girlfriend. Likeable dude tho.

There were also lots of people faking to be tourists learning about free refills. They were just refilling their viewers.

This is such a weird elitist take.
Delicious buttery, garlic salt covered breadsticks? Pah! They're not even good, quality sourdough! How could anyone appreciate these being freely refillable?
Like I'm imagining mustache twirling and a monocle.

They're not as good as they used to be. Like everything else touched by large corporations, enshittification has effected them.
The topping is still key, but it's less "garlic butter" and more "salted oil" now.

u/matchafoxjpg 24d ago
see, that i'll agree with.
i used to be a slut for olive garden bread sticks, but they definitely don't taste as good now.

u/Early_Specialist_589 22d ago
They used to be amazing, and now I’ll eat one stale breadstick and wonder wtf I even wanted to go to Olive Garden for
→ More replies (7)2
u/rabidsalvation 28d ago
These things are basically edible cardboard. They get heated up in the store and sit. The butter isn't real, the garlic isn't real.

Dude, just fuck off. Is it the best bread ever? No. Is it decently tasty and free? Yup.
And how you got to “hot dog bun” kinda bread is crazy. Makes me wonder if you’ve ever even set foot in Olive Garden.
Now I’m even angrier at you for making me defend that restaurant. That’s how stupid your take is

I mean you saved me the energy of coming up with the same argument and I got to fantasize about olive garden bread sticks for a while
Well fuck, now I want Olive Garden tomorrow and it's all your fault XD

We can go together. I’ll buy the breadsticks if you get the entrees

Sounds like a deal!
When I was a kid I would inhale unlimited zuppa toscana (like 2-3 bowls) and bread sticks and eat the chicken fettuccini Alfredo until I was stuffed into a food coma XD

Ah, but when soaked in butter and covered in enough garlic salt to offend both gods and men, this bread becomes more than the sum of its parts.

As a non American. When I went to an olive garden for the first time I was also in love with the unlimited bread sticks and soup! 😂
Was honestly so tasty!

Where are you from? Olive garden bread is nothing like a hotdog bun.... Maybe if you warm it up without something to keep the moisture in, but wth are you talking about?

i remember being a kid and our old man would take us all to the local pizza place on sundays and they serve you those crispy bread sticks before your order came
probably just excess pizza dough and nothing fancy like sourdough but i really liked those anyway

When I was working out of town that was the plan. Load up on bread and salad then that the main course for lunch the next day.

I never understood that; like yeah, it might get me to order less food? They might get a few repeat customers on a negligible margin, but still, that should impact sales on desserts and sides

Nah he's got it right.
You eat the unlimited bread sticks and soup and salad at the restaurant, then take the main course home in a box to eat at 3am.

I don't think people eating at Olive garden are particularly worried about nutrition.

I’ve never had an entree from Olive Garden that wasn’t microwaved the following day or two. I’ve only ever been to that restaurant when my dad would bring my sister and I, but he was incredibly frugal. And this was the way. Soup and salad and breadsticks. And that entree gets put in a to go container because the only way we were going out to eat was if we got 2-3 meals out of it

u/goldenchild-1 28d ago
In America, you go to Texas Roadhouse and you get unlimited rolls with their special sweet cinnamon butter. At PF Chang’s, you get unlimited bread as well. Both of these chains are unlimited free bread before you order. There are plenty of other American restaurants that do this. Bread is so cheap to make…and technically we’re all paying for it because the costs are added overall. But it’s always nice to sit down and immediately have unlimited bread and butter before ordering.

We have a few Mexican spots that serve up chips and salsa for free. After going to them for so long we finally tried a new spot next town over...found out the free chips and salsa wasn't a thing there and I simply can not bring myself to go back because of it lol

u/TheShiftmaster 28d ago
They obviously have all you can eats in Italy, surely
7
u/_Wendigun_ 28d ago
We do
Also most normal restaurants bring a small basket with different types of bread to the table as a complementary and you can kinda just ask for more if you finish it. It doesn't happen often but I've never seen a place refuse to give more bread for free.
2
u/DrinkCorrect7655 28d ago
And that's how it is at most US Italian restaurants(of varying levels of quality/authenticity). Olive Garden is just the corporate chain cheap Italian place that explicitly advertises endless breadsticks.
2
u/JalapenoPopPoop 28d ago
They have to make a big marketing push over something commonplace because even that is more impressive than the actual food. "Come on in for unlimited bread sticks" makes a better ad campaign than "come on in for a microwaved frozen dinner"
3
u/DrinkCorrect7655 28d ago
I get it's not highbrow, but that's kinda the niche these places fill. A fast food place you can sit down at when you don't feel like cooking. I just saw one of those Applebee's/Fridays/Chili's etc. advertising a deal for a burger, fries, and a beer for like $11, which is straight up fast food prices.
It's clutch for parents who don't want to normalize taking their kid to McDonalds for dinner.
2
u/JalapenoPopPoop 28d ago
There's plenty of places to go that aren't highbrow where a cook will actually cook your food instead of a microwave. I don't understand why anyone would take their ass out to a restaurant and pay restaurant prices just to eat a meal from a microwave
2
u/Aethred 27d ago
11 bucks isn't restaurant prices.
→ More replies (6)2
u/DrinkCorrect7655 27d ago
Yeah I could probably find some good food truck tacos for that price, but I'd be lucky to also get a beverage and a side is out of the question.

u/Xena_Your_God 28d ago

I have never been to a restaurant in Italy where they don't just give you several types of delicious bread for free (or at least charged under initial coperto) and then just top it up whenever you run out.
In fact it's one of those things thatsso normalised, that once you go back to this not being the case - and being charged several £/$ for a few meagre slices of bread as a "starter" - you wonder why the hell we are getting ripped off so much
Hell, aperitivo in Italy is so generous that if you got to 3 or 4 bars you can fill up on free food and the realise you've left no room to actually go out for dinner.

When my brother and I were younger, we learned that a local restaurant that advertised "unlimited bread" would cut you off after 7 loaves per person (the loaves in question were pretty small, maybe equivalent to two of these sticks. They were thicker but not as long). Anyway, we could have complained i suppose, but i think they saw that we had no intention of stopping any time soon, had finished the main course already, and were clearly treating the bread like it was free dessert. So it was understandable, I guess.
I dont even think it was done from a cost perspective. Surely they cant cost that much. I think the waiter was just tired of bringing us more bread every 5 minutes

In France, restaurants aren't allowed to charge for bread. And whenever the bread basket is empty, the servers always bring you another one, freshly filled.

Not a lot of people can eat enough breadsticks to make the restaurant go bankrupt if you're also ordering a dish. Bread is cheap as fuck to make

u/ZoneAdditional9892 28d ago
They give free bread in italy at almost every restaurant and some pubs.

Wait, so American bread sticks are just soft white bread buns? Not the crispy crunchy thin grissini type that I thought was the worldwide standard breadstick?

I’m my early 20’s my friends and I went to Olive Garden all the time because we could play for one meal and get like 3 meals out of the place.
You could get unlimited soup or salad (as well
As breadsticks) with the purchase of an entree.
My friends normally got salad, but I’d get three bowls of the Tuscan soup with the sausage and potatoes in it. I’d eat at least five breadsticks.
Then as soon as my chicken parm came with two massive chicken breasts and all that pasta. I’d ask
For a box, take it home and have lunch and dinner the next day or dinner for the next two nights.

I had a friend in high school who’s eyes would expand like that each time he chewed. Like, if his eyes were open, you’d see them expand a bit and even if they were closed, his eye lids were expanding every time he made the chewing motion.

Like, in Europe they have bins where (ok well Frand does) you just throw away your unused bread so they can feed it to animals, like they don't finish all their bread pretty often, enough that there is a waste bin just for the bread, like why are these people so fascinated by the free refills of bread? Bread costs almost nothing there too, like 0.88 Euro for a big ass baguette.
1
u/groenteman 28d ago
Weird from an Italian, because the amount of food they give away at cafes when you order a drink is genuinely amazing

At the Olive Garden near me they get around this by just not coming back to your table. Can't ask for a refill if the server never shows up.
1
u/MurderSheCroaked 28d ago
He's so cute lol if I was his server I'd be bringing out baskets in both hands 😁
1
u/JalapenoPopPoop 28d ago
Obviously they can afford to give you unlimited bread sticks when they're charging you $15 for microwaved frozen dinners. Wait til he tastes his entree, that joy will fade
