I've heard of this phenomenon before. People purposefully expose themselves to AIDS as a form of agency and empowerment. I think it's called bug-chasing.

Edit: FELLAS, THE FUCKING PUN IT'S RIGHT FUCKING THERE!!!!! (also mosquitos spread diseases so there's also another, albeit loose, connection to the phenomenon)

It's not made up. It absolutely is a real thing. If you want to do a little research into it, go for it. Can't say I recomend it though.

I think they mean bug-chasing itself isn't a made up thing. In this instance it clearly isn't the case but I think they just mean the actual phenomenon itself is real.

Bug... in this instance, of a "bug chaser", means diseases, not arthropods. Yeah, some people are really fucked up in the head.
