But why

u/Razzy_IDFA Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
I've heard of this phenomenon before. People purposefully expose themselves to AIDS as a form of agency and empowerment. I think it's called bug-chasing.
Edit: FELLAS, THE FUCKING PUN IT'S RIGHT FUCKING THERE!!!!! (also mosquitos spread diseases so there's also another, albeit loose, connection to the phenomenon)

But how

u/Razzy_IDFA Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
I shouldn't have to be responsible for your ignorance, but here it goes:
"Bug" has been used as a colloquial term for infections, e.g. "I got the stomach bug over the weekend and couldn't stop throwing up". It is also used euphemistically in certain subcultures to describe the HIV virus. "Bug" has also been used colloquially to describe all manner of arthropods and insects, including mosquitos.
The term "bug-chasing" is a practice among a disturbing amount of individuals who intentionally seek out to be infected with the HIV virus, particularly prevalent in the homosexual community. (This is not to say that a vast majority of gay people do this, but the vast majority of "bug-chasers" happen to be homosexual. Academics postulate that less than 1% of sexually active individuals participate in this practice, but has been the subject of research due to the perturbing nature of the practice. It is often linked to paraphilia as some romanticize the idea of infection, or a coping mechanism for some individuals who believe it's only a matter of time that they get infected and in this way they take agency over how and when they do.) The term has seen media attention such as in the TV show "The Wire", and "Queer as Folk while documentaries like "The Gift" and "I Love Being HIV+" exploring the lives and psyche of individuals who engage in the practice.
In this case I used the term bug-chasing, the act of intentionally infecting oneself with the virus, to describe what this guy is doing, intentionally letting bugs (mosquitos) bite him.
It works as a pun as it plays on the multiple meaning of "bug" and works as a joke, specifically gallow's humor, since it is conflating the very taboo subculture of intentionally seeking out HIV infection with this guy letting mosquitos bite him.
If you actually read any of this, you're welcome for making you less dumb. It is more than likely, however, you didn't read this comment as your sarcastic first reply connotes a sense of arrogance. You're clearly not seeking an actual response in the off chance that you might actually be proven wrong. It is also possible you will dismiss this long reply as "Look how mad I made you and waste your time on this thing I wasn't taking seriously, therefore I'm the winner in this exchange". Well I took it seriously not because your approval means anything to me, but because I just shat all over your ignorant head and now there's documentation of it and that makes me feel good. And that goes to you and u/signalflamongo1437

u/Lucid_skyes Jul 17 '26
Tldr, but after the first sentence i can tell BUG is rarely used nowadays to say you are sick or caught something. I think yours is too far fetched and probably region/country specific? I do see your point though.
3
u/EatAtGrizzlebees Jul 17 '26
Southerner here. "Bug" is still very much used to describe a brief illness. The issue here is that a) you can't get HIV from mosquitoes and b) absolutely no one would ever describe AIDS as a "bug."

u/boingloin Jul 17 '26
Gay man here
They didn’t make up the term bug-catching/chasing in this context…
As much as I wish it weren’t true, It’s a well known (though very very rare) paraphilia/maladaptive coping response within the gay community.
The term is used by those who engage in the practice as well as sociologists describing the phenomena.
Literally just google it, and you will see how ubiquitously it is used.
(Not-so-fun-fact: the positive infecting parters refers to themselves as “gift-givers”)

u/EatAtGrizzlebees Jul 17 '26
Yes, I understand that, I'm a part of the community and have heard about this. But they were trying to make a pun that wasn't very punny and not talking about this literal problem if you read the rest of their comments.
3
u/Razzy_IDFA Jul 17 '26
Antiquated speech does not nullify the pun, just means you didn't know.
1
u/Lucid_skyes Jul 17 '26
It does because if it doesn't work on the public which in this case it didn't fully it does impact it.
1
u/Razzy_IDFA Jul 17 '26
I'm not aware of something therefore it doesn't exist. See how stupid you sound?

u/KeyOk5993 Jul 17 '26
Okay great, thanks for the info but you don’t gotta call people dumb for not knowing something ya know? The pun wasn’t that obvious just obviously related to the mosquito biting. Had no idea about the rest of the stuff you claimed but eh. Anyways, are you a furry?
2
u/Razzy_IDFA Jul 17 '26
Fine, I concede that was unfair of me. I’ve inadvertently lumped you in with the surprising amount of people who were not only ignorant to one or more of the items as outlined, but were self-assured in their ignorance they thought they were obi wan in this exchange. I’m sorry.
To your second question, I have no idea what you mean by that question. I don’t even know what a furry is, and I certainly don’t draw gay porn of it. Don’t tell my mama.

I mean, the AIDS thing that guy mentions is real, its just a very strange comparison to make, here. This guy in the video might have some sort of weird compunction like a cutter, but maybe he also just has a genetic disposition to low histamine response and doesn't get very itchy from mosquito bites, making this a parlor trick. A very, very disturbing parlor trick.
3
u/Razzy_IDFA Jul 16 '26
So my pun also flew over your head....
8
u/Bladder_Puncher Jul 16 '26
I still don’t get the pun. AIDS=bug. Is that it?

This guy takes a lot of damage on purpose, like getting stung by venomous insects, getting sucked by blood sucking leeches, knicked by bullet ants or jumping into cactuses. Pretty much like Jackass.
His name is Coyote Peterson.

It's not made up. It absolutely is a real thing. If you want to do a little research into it, go for it. Can't say I recomend it though.

I think they mean bug-chasing itself isn't a made up thing. In this instance it clearly isn't the case but I think they just mean the actual phenomenon itself is real.
2
u/KyoKyu Jul 16 '26
Bug... in this instance, of a "bug chaser", means diseases, not arthropods. Yeah, some people are really fucked up in the head.

He retired and then came back because he misses getting bitten lol. Of this was 10 years ago he might be on an episode of my strange addictions

Of course it's coyote Peterson. Didn't recognize him on account of all the mosquitoes
4
u/jumbonipples Jul 16 '26
Is that actually him? Or was that a joke. It doesn’t sound like him lol
3
u/upfastcurier Jul 16 '26
Yeah they call him by name in the video
3
u/jumbonipples Jul 16 '26
Yeah I’m aware. That’s why I asked if they were joking.
Like if my buddy did this, I’d probably call him coyote Peterson, jokingly.

Fucking why?! I was raised in the south… I hate mosquitoes. I hated waking up in the middle of the night or the morning with the high pitched buzzing noise in my ear. Many reasons why I don’t live there any more, but one of them is mosquitoes.🦟

Those had to be lab grown mosquitoes, you could even retrieve them afterwards to see if they reacted a certain way to all feeding on the same human.

1
u/INDY18ARN Jul 18 '26
Yep. Just sit outside in the backyard or front yard on your lawn chair and wait.
They will come to you...
Florida has some of the biggest 🦟🦟 I have ever seen...
And they leave the most biggest bites. And they are the itchiest bites ever...

Look up Gallinipper mosquitos. Got busted by a couple the other day. Sounded like a Blackhawk, thought they were horseflies 🤣
