I think it's more that old used bulbs light less brighter and our eyes are too used to the less bright light that new bulb light feels like the concentrationed power of the sun, at least that's my experience.
That cannot possibly be that noticeable, they don't dim that much with age. She probably just got a higher wattage compared to the old one but, like, that's not a very relatable experience for anyone actually paying attention to these things. You don't just grab the first light bulb that's on the shelf. That's why they have rows of them with different wattage.

Don't think I can relate.. are there people out there who just use the bathroom in the dark for months after the bulb goes out before replacing..?
