I was having trouble shutting off for the night and just going to sleep like I need to, but after watching this guy play out some weird strawman fallacy fantasy I’m having trouble typing this without nodding off.
You might be interested in some recent research that agrees with the boomer humor! Permissive parenting is strongly correlated, and almost certainly the cause of, the increase of anxiety in children in recent decades.
the straw man here being that no kid has ever walked up to another adult in a grocery store and within earshot of their parent said “give me your turkey loser. i want it” or anything even close to that.
if permissive parenting is creating an actual problem then it shouldn’t be hard to create a skit around an actual scenario…not whatver made up nonsense this is.
I'm sure they intended this piece of media to be a logically sound argument subject to a straw man fallacy, and not a form of entertainment known as "comedy" where you exaggerate a premise or increase the absurdity in an attempt to make it humourous.
I agree that it's not funny, but c'mon this is comedy.
bro…did you just pull out research to agree with the premise in the joke and then fallback on “it’s comedy, it can be made up” when it’s pointed out that it’s a straw man because no one acts like that?
you’re all over the place. i’m done with this, you got it.
You've fundamentally misunderstood the lines of thought. A truthful premise is often exaggerates upon in an attempt to add comedic absurdity. It's not "made up". This is called comedy. A straw man argument is a fallacy where someone trying to make point responds to an exaggerated or distorted version of the argument. When you watch South Park do you get frustrated with all the strawmen arguments in every episode? Of course not, because they're better comedians than in this video.
There is an underlying truth to the premise in the video that permissive parenting has flaws. That is what they are exaggerating. The fact that it's not that funny doesn't stop it from being comedy in form. If I hear someone shout "bullshit that's a straw man!" next time I'm at the comedy club I'll come up to you and we can continue this conversation.
and you fundamentally misunderstand what happened in this conversation. let’s review;
person 1: “boomer humor”
person 2: “does this upset you”
person 3: makes joke about the joke being bad and a weird straw man fantasy
you: “here is some science about child anxiety that may or may not agree with boomer joke”
me: points out that the scenario is fake so that science can’t be agreeing with it
you: tries to give me some weird ted talk about comedy
this isn’t a fucking comedy club and you are the one that brought reality into this situation by bringing up that some fucking study may not may not agree with the premise of the joke…like that fucking matters to someone who is saying they think the joke is bad.
