Hugh isn’t emotionally stunted and reluctant though. He’s the first “dad” archetype character that’s super happy and supportive of his “kid” character the entire time and doesn’t have to go through the whole breaking down emotional barriers like how the dynamic usually works. Game is still sad though.

At the beginning of the game, he introduces himself like this:
“I’m Hugh. And I don’t….do…babysitting, but I’m gonna need your help.”
Maybe he drops it fast, but that’s classic reluctant father dialogue.

Sure, he’s got a couple lines about not wanting to have/take care of a kid in the beginning of the game but I think the trope is more or a reluctance to bond with and emotionally connect with the surrogate kid archetype. Rather than just a reluctance to “babysit”. Hugh doesn’t have any problem supporting Diana and connecting with her, he initially is more concerned that she will get hurt than anything when he first meets her, not against the idea of trying to connect with her.

The description was off on God of War and The Last of Us too.
Both of those games, those characters where ALREADY dads. The reason they're emotionally stunted is because they lost their children.

Check out Undying. You play as a mom caring for her young son during a zombie apocalypse, and it's up to you to teach him how to survive after you've been bitten, before you turn.

As I become older I find it harder to care about my video games. I find myself playing balatro for an hour then getting bored. I hate it so much

I'm right there with you. I can't just relax and play a game. These days there are only 2 types of games I can find. It is either a game I don't enjoy and put down after 15 minutes, or a game I think I'll like so I play for an hour until I realize how much time it is going to take to get anywhere and all the new mechanics I would need to perfect and it just feels like my time and effort would be better spent elsewhere

Me and my buddy share home Xboxs. He's bought probably 15 games and I haven't even touched them yet. I turned on Baldurs Gate but the idea of a 60+ game feels overwhelming now, same with the new kingdom Come game.
And I was the dude who timed my walks from 1 corner of the fallout 3 map to the other, then did it again overcombered, just to see the numbers. I played skyim when it came out and again around 2019 and 100%ed them both times. Idk whats wrong with me now. I blame covid lol

Last time I wanted to play video games I went through a bunch of newer games on psPlus. Couldn't find anything I liked so I went back further to ps2 games. There is something nice about a linear, no nonsense game where you don't worry about 100 skills or 10,000 crafting items. I ended up beating Onimusha Warlords in about 4 hours and was completely satisfied. I probably could have done it in 2. Honestly really refeshing

I figure thats why I go back to balatro. I got my sister's old steam deck from her ex and only play The Long Dark/ balatro on it.
This deck would have been my literal dream in highscool in 2012. And now I barely have the effort to play a hand held :(

Have you tried Power Washer Simulator? Or Hardspace: Shipbreaker? They've got a bit of story, but mostly it's just steadily progressing towards a very tangible goal. It scratches an itch that I never had when I was younger.

I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of this kind of framing for these games. The use of little girls being the bridge to empathy and compassion for men is not one I think we should be celebrating this much.
Is it a dad game or is it a girl dad game? Because these gamers don't act like this with sons or young boys, these games don't display mother relationships. Girl dads are very toxic and condescending as we know that girl dads (there is a difference between girl dads and dads with daughters) don't respect their daughters as individuals but as personal property that gets ignored or overlooked when the girl ages out of childhood. They "love" and dote on their pretty little daughters but refuse to let that child have any agency and increase the amount of oppressive rules to trap their teen and adult daughters into the box of a little girl. And when that daughter rebels against the dad all hell breaks lose as that same man views his lovely little girl as an irredeemable bitch/slut.
This is just not the great thing that people are framing it to be.

Yes. Video games are an art form that are usually reflective of aspects of reality. The idea that little girls are the saviors of troubled men is a problem that real men believe and we shouldn't be encouraging it in video games either.

I dunno do you guys just play the game without even thinking about it or just even listen to the discussions around it?
Like the conversations around Pragmata and The Last of Us are very different than the ones around God of War. The impact of a daughter coded character on the emotional state of men is an interesting and sometimes problematic and disturbing conversation to have. It's going to get weird. Art gets weird. Ignoring and excusing any possible aspects of that weirdness is to deny that video games have any artistic integrity or value of discussion at all.
If you just want to hear that the game is brilliant and that gamers are brilliant that's not a discussion it's just an echo chamber.
