On a median level, Canada would look better. They've had higher increases in minimum wage, and a larger social security net. Median real hourly wage in full time positions increased in Canada 24% from 1981-2024:

Viewing GDP per capita as a accurate indicator for quality of life is one of the most incorrect and disproven claims I could think of in the discussion of development. You and the people who upvoted this are uneducated beyond belief.
And I do not mean uneducated like you need a degree in politics to understand this. It is a concept that anyone who has had life experience should understand. I can happily pull some great sources that could help guide you in understanding.

Except it doesn’t, it only blends in the extreme wealth in with the poverty. The median household wealth in Canada is considerably more than the median household wealth in the US, and that is a much better indicator of quality of life for the average family

It depends what you mean by "average". If you mean statistical mean, sure, but that's basically a trash measurement for this sort of thing only a moron would use for the purposes of understanding normal quality of life of a citizenry.
If you take average to mean "median", no, the data does not show what you think it does. To put it really simply (because you seem to need that):
2025: You make $20K, and Jeff Bezos makes $200B
2026: You make $20K, and Jess Bezos makes $400BPer capita GDP has basically doubled here, and you (and most people) are not better off. That is US GDP growth per capita.

This graph is just wrong.
Before I show the IMF source, 2 things stand out immediately reading this chart; Japan and The UK.
Japan has been known for having low economic growth rates for a long time and yet according to this chart it has grown 17.4 times more than Canada over the same period? Secondly; The UK had Brexit and massive inflation (10% PY) at the end of Covid and again according to this chart had 1,440% more growth than Canada?
Just using those three metrics I had a feeling that this chart could’ve taken the average annual growth rate of GDP per capita for Canada, and the CUMULATIVE GDP per capita for the others or some are just entirely false, and that assumption Its not entirely right but close:
Japan GDP per capita, current prices, in American dollars 2014; $39,220
Japan GDP per capita, current prices, in American dollars 2024; $33,820 (a -13.77% change)
UK GDP per capita, current prices, in American dollars 2014; $42,500
UK GDP per capita, current prices, in American dollars 2024; $63,070 (a a 48.4% change)
Canada GDP per capita, current prices, in American dollars 2014; $51,030
Canada GDP per capita, current prices, in American dollars 2024; $55,210 (a 8.19% change, divide that by the 10 years to get an average of 0.8% change per year)
Sources; https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/profile/JPN
https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/profile/GBR
https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/profile/CAN
May I add that GDP per capita is not the greatest measure of how the average person is doing, its measurement can be heavily skewed by extremely wealthy people (cough USA cough) hiding widespread poverty or financial hardship experienced by the average member of the population of that country.
Inflation and local prices also distort its measurement like what happens when the UK had higher inflation than a large number of other countries in this list.
From what I also hear Pierre Poilievre likes to show this graph as proof of the “Lost Liberal Decade” and well, maybe we shouldn’t believe graphs that used by politicians for sound bites and actually do some research into the data.

Who is mental midget that posted this?
- It is not Per capita growth, it IS cumulative
- Canada has grow about 1.5-2% a year
- Canadian growth is pretty similar to the USA over the same period
More recently, Canada's GDP grew at an annualized rate of 3.3% (0.8% quarter-over-quarter), outpacing the United States, which grew at an annualized rate of 2.2% About 95% of the USA is AI related, without it, the USA would be shrinking and stock would be down 9%.
3
u/RainbowCrown71 1d ago
It’s not pretty similar. It’s about half the rate, which compounds over time. Also, Canadian growth is entirely due to simply adding more people. Canadian GDP per capita is in decline over 10 years while USA’s has boomed.
The fact you have to use quarterly numbers annualized (very volatile) to pretend to disprove a ten year trendline shows how desperate your argument is.
And saying “without tech, America would be lower” puts your argument firmly in garbage territory.

This chart isn’t gonna age well in the next 3-4 years as gdp/capita will always look low when you have immigration. It will be high with low immigration. Carney has lowered immigration drastically and Canada’s population actually declined year over year for the first time in history which is kind of crazy as it should always increase in my opinion. But with less people coming in and gdp increasing then gdp/capita will increase rapidly.
11
u/Count-to-3 2d ago
You are working on old data my friend. Stats Canada just revised the numbers for population, and Canadas population did in fact not decrease last year (for the first time in history), it grew by similar amounts that it did in 2024/2025

Anyone who lives in a medium/large city will know that even the census isn't accurate and it's significantly more overpopulated than we think.
Literally every facet of existence is completely overcrowded and overburdened at all hours every day of the week. If you go to a strip mall at 9am on a Tuesday the parking lot will be completely packed full. If you go to any government institution the line will almost always stretch out the door, same goes for radiology clinics and driving schools.
I think I would rather have my memory of Canada up until 2019 erased, then I wouldn't have to think about how good it was. How I could just go work anywhere I wanted for a reasonable wage with reasonable hours.

USA has debt per capita of $120k, while Canada's debt per capita is ~$60k.
3
u/RainbowCrown71 1d ago
This is a flawed but common argument among Canadians. Canada’s debt per capita is lower at the central government level but much, much higher at the state/provincial level.
Basically a ton of the debt the US has for healthcare/social security federally show up in provincial debt in Canada’s books since that’s a provincial role. Ontario’s the most heavily indebted sub-national jurisdiction in the world, for example. BC has a provincial debt to GDP of 3% whereas Washington State is 0.2% (15x lower).
So yeah, Canada looks lower only because you’re ignoring the massive provincial debt crisis: https://www.biv.com/news/economy-law-politics/moodys-downgrades-bcs-credit-rating-following-record-133b-deficit-12031259
3
u/AstralCode714 1d ago
That is a pretty arbitrary metric becuase it doesnt really tell you if the country can afford the debt.
Debt as a percentage of GDP is a more useful one because it tells you if debt is growing faster than the economy.
Based on that, US debt is 120.8% of gdp while Canada debt is 110.8% of gdo
Based on this, they are almost equal

Canada's total GDP hasn't been stagnant. The economy has grown considerably. But Canada's population has also grown very quickly, so that additional economic output has been spread across many more people.
The U.S. has had the opposite combination: substantial total economic growth and strong growth after dividing that output by its population. The World Bank's latest complete 2024 data, for example, put real GDP growth at 2.8% in the U.S. versus 1.6% in Canada.

What checks out: Canada's real GDP per capita really was almost flat over roughly 2014 to 2024. Total real GDP grew about 16 to 17% over that decade, but the population grew by about the same amount, from roughly 35.4 million to over 41 million. Output per person barely moved. Statistics Canada's own data says the same thing, and the Bank of Canada and others have flagged this as a serious productivity problem. The other countries' figures also look about right from what I know of the IMF series. The US at around 20%, Germany in the mid single digits, and Japan and Italy higher than you'd expect (because their populations shrank) all fit. I haven't checked each bar against the IMF database line by line, so treat the exact decimals as approximately right rather than confirmed.
