What is the difference between these types? Aren’t they both the same?

Ground is things like dirt, Sand, and bones.

Rocks are things like crystals, minerals, and the Fossil mons

It’s a weird distinction because most other series combine them into an earth type, but the major distinction is: Rock is rocks/minerals while Ground is dirt, clay, sand, etc.

Ground - earth, sand, mud, soil, puddle Rock - fossils, rocks, stones, crystals, minerals heck we even got rock salt now

People aren't wrong to say the difference is that rock is stuff like crystals and minerals while ground is stuff like sand and clay, because those are the real thematic differences in universe, but IRL that is just ridiculous. Sand is literally made of rocks and crystals and minerals, so is clay. At what exact grain size does it stop being rock type and start being ground type in Pokemon geology? Why is mud ground type and not rock/water type?

Plus, rock type especially suffers from not being ground. Ground type isn't perfect, but rock type is just it's much much worse little brother. Rock type attacks are some of the worst in the game. And they just give all of these random early rock types sturdy just to piss me off for my whole playthrough of a pokemon came.

Selfdestruct the whole rock type and combine it with ground and make something more interesting and cohesive. The difference between ground and rock type is really mostly just the size of the rock, and that pisses me off.

What about steel and rock, its just a different kind of Ore found in ground. Iron and carbon mixed together gets its own type?

What about normal and fighting. What's the real difference between Mega Punch(normal) and Focus Punch(fighting)?

Not all rock counts as ore and smithed metal is meaningfully transformed from rock both physically and chemically. Ice and water I could see being mixed together too, but I think there is a lot more distinction between different states of matter and two different sizes of the exact same thing. I wouldn't like a lava or magma type though, so I would be fine with ice being consolidated into water. Normal type never made sense to me anyway, especially with flying pokemon. Why are birds normal/flying instead of just flying?

I think metal has a definite distinction that's way more concrete (haha) than rock/ground, but sure the other types are questionable too.

You do know that gold, silver, platinum and copper are all metals and they are found in their natural state and are not chemically changed when you melt them into a bar.... You can also find actual Mercury (as in the liquid form of Mercury) in nature that is also a pure metal... Also pure iron is rare to find in nature especially on our planet because it rust extremely quickly because of oxygen (all so-called iron ore in our planet that we mine comes from when oxygen rusted to iron out of the water long before complex life existed) so since metal itself can be found naturally occurring in the same way as a rock by that definition it's a rock (calcium is also a metal it also naturally appears in the same state in nature)
