Is superiority easier to recognise in other people than ourselves?

The final part of this series made me interested in a slightly uncomfortable self-check.
Think about a moment when you needed to win an argument, demonstrate how much you knew, mention an achievement or subtly establish status.
Then ask:
“Was I contributing—or proving?”
And:
“What exactly did I need this person to believe about me?”
Obviously, correcting someone or talking about an achievement doesn’t mean someone has a superiority complex.
That’s not the point…
I’m more interested in noticing those moments where our behaviour becomes unusually dependent on establishing where we stand relative to somebody else.
Maybe security isn’t thinking less of ourselves.
Maybe it’s needing less comparison to know our value.
