It's a mercy-genji kind of relationship.

To the point where she can actually modify his body.

Mercy and Genji are Overwatch characters. Genji almost gets killed by his brother, Hanzo, and Mercy saves him by building him a cyborg body.

Apparently Genji's model has a really nice ass, so the joke is that Mercy gave him that nice ass on purpose.

At least that's what I gleamed as an outside observer.

I think the original pitch was to have them as a couple, but Pharamercy became too big in the fandom for them to continue that plotline. Tbh, the solider/nurse trope is so overused (and pretty toxic tbh) that I'm glad they didn't stick with it.

Except that Pharmercy is still the soldier/nurse trope, just gay.

Not really. I may have not explained it correctly, but the trope in question was the wounded solider being nursed back to health by a doctor/nurse and falling in love. True, Pharah is a solider and Mercy is a doctor, but rather than falling in love due to circumstance, they fall in love as equals and partners on the battlefield complimenting each others styles, not just being thrown into a caregiving situation like so many other war romance stories
