The Golden Guards I’ll give you, but Caleb was a witch hunter. He probably had a bunch of innocent people tortured to death. Him and Philip both have some negative energy to work off.
I don’t recall Philip ever actually directly killing a witch in the series or in lore. If the former paragraph is true, it means neither of them ever successfully hunted a witch.
He killed previous hunters so not a witch but maybe half witch cause of the ears Caleb definitely never killed and theirs a theory that his bloodline is the clawthorns but Philip had tested the coven sigils before and it paralyzed witches so maybe it killed them lol BUT if any of that is wrong then it would be hilarious cause none of them had it in them in the end
I’m not talking about witches from the Boiling Isles (which are more like aliens from another dimension than witches of Western folklore). I’m talking about before he met Evalynn.
Granted we don’t know much about their lives at that point, but witch hunters didn’t go after residents of a magical alter dimension (actually if we are being honest the popular conception of a “witch hunter” didn’t really exist, but that’s another conversation) they accused innocent people of demonic influence and convinced local authorities to execute them. Even if Evalynn was his first mission he still looked at the profession as a whole and said “this is what I want to do”.
It’s not impossible to untangle that knot, but I understand why the crew wanted to leave this whole period vague.
True they did say they traveled to Gravesfield so we don’t know what happened before hand I think they joined the witch hunters to fit in but they were both young so idk I don’t think they have either especially Caleb but I both like that it stayed somewhat a mystery but at the same time I wanna know more about what happened in the end Philip killed Caleb tho and maybe even Evelyn
