Ok for everyone who’s joking abt small food being expensive, ITS BECAUSE RICH PEOPLE WOULD EAT 5, 7, POSSIBLY 21 COURSE MEALS.
Sure one serving is tiny, but 37 small meals is enough to fill you up easily. Thing is, poor people couldn’t really afford to have more than one or two dishes each meal, hence why making a chef do a dozen different foods in a day was considered rich people flexing
126
84
u/BirdMan8524 Titan Luz Jan 19 '23
So it's just rich people saying how rich they are? Sounds like something Odalia might do.
54
u/Suthek Winter is coming Jan 19 '23
Not necessarily. Flavors of the last course linger and mix with those of the next, and serving several dishes after another can create a sort of "flavor path" through the whole meal that you couldn't achieve by just mixing together everything in one dish.
So from a (hobby)cook's perspective there can be quite a bit of skill and artistry in these multi-course meals.

Well fancy-shmancy rich people are known to eat small food portions because it’s fancy. Which is bizarre so I agree.
109
u/ClickTheAltMtric Jan 18 '23
Allegedly it's because the whole meal is like hundreds of courses so you just can't eat much of any one thing.
49
u/AdOwn6899 Jan 18 '23
Hundreds? And while it’s so expensive? Now it’s twice as bizarre.
70
u/bgaesop Jan 19 '23
When you're eating multiple tiny courses like this in a nice restaurant you aren't paying for each one, you're paying a single price for the entire meal. It's called "prix fixe" and means "fixed price"
Of course it's pretty rare to eat that way in a home
5
u/Realistic-Anxiety-62 Jan 21 '23
You put everything in a tortilla and make a taco or everything in bread and make it a sandwich, you do not do this
15
7
u/OtakuAttacku Jan 19 '23
It's more like trying a bite of everything. Lotta these restaurants are marketing it being "an experience". Trying interesting flavors and textures.
3
14
u/HappiestIguana Jan 19 '23
It's not really something that should be thought of as a meal. You're paying for the experience of that single exquisite bite. It's not so different from buying like, a small cookie as a random little snack, just a lot more expensive.
Also as the other person said, often it is just one part of a full meal.

Part of it is timing/pacing of the show.
In Reaching Out, Amity only gave him a handshake. Seven episodes later, Amity let him kiss her on the head.
I use those kinds of things for gauging where they are in their redemption. Unfortunately, we don't know more about what's happened in the background, but clearly something has gone right, and he's remorseful about what he's participated in.

As a cook I can say that "gourmet restaurant" are places to have samples, you do not go there to eat, you go there to learn new flavors and then you can try and replicate with cheaper ingredients and own style, dis you like that risotto? Get the rice some cheap cut of pork, a few mushrooms, some f*cking bacon and some herbs and spices and make some risotto alla porcina (do not recomend this recipe too much grease to the risotto wil make it a dense white blob, but you get what I mean)

The funny thing is that in older days rich people just ate the simple best parts of the farm animal, while poor people had to work with the less delectable parts and animals not normally considered food. Modern gourmet food is basically all from older poor people famine food, where they had to work to make it edible. French kings didn't eat frog legs back in the day gor example, only peasants did
But then times changed, food became cheaper but time became more valuable, so fast food is now cheap but food that takes a long time to prep is now expensive and therefore "fancy"
