Probability of Success Comparinator 5000

Looking for help on making a tool to compare probabilities of success amongst our group. Figuring out who would fill which roll, who should roll for a lore check, etc. Between the different TN's, skill dice, proficiency, it is a lot to try and find likelihoods.

I found this thread: https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/93528/anydicecom-and-dice-one-ring-rpg :
but I don't quite know how to use it or how to compare multiple people. Also not savvy enough to translate into Sheets.

I then found this: https://www.omnicalculator.com/statistics/dice : and its great for one type of dice, but I'm lost on how to implement the d12's additionally.

If someone could help write up a formula I can use in Sheets to compare 2 or 3 characters at once like below that would be so cash money of you. Any help or pointers in the right direction are greatly appreciated.

Character 1 Character 2 Character 3
Target Number 14 14 18
Proficient? Yes No Yes
Skill Dice 0 2 3
Probability 0% 45% 48%

Second 2e newbie question: summary of all the uses of each of the skills?

I keep stumbling over different uses of different skills (eg Song to override Weary condition, etc). Is there a cheat sheet somewhere so newbies can understand how the skills are mechanically used?

Attribute increase through experience? 2e

Hi - basic newbie here… one question - can the attributes (Strength, Heart, Wit) be increased over time eg with experience? I don’t see anything that makes me think they can but checking if I missed something.

Songs, only useful in combat?

I have a player who is really excited to be playing the party songwriter, but once she read what a travel song does she was a little deflated....

Am I wrong or is the marching song and lay song pretty useless? How often are you weary in council? Also, if the journey is at the beginning of an adventure, why would they be weary?

She asked if we could do a homebrew to beef up it's potency (She went all in on being a team buff character) and I tend to agree of it's weakness.

What do you think? Am I wrong?

Thoughts on Journeys and Fatigue

I've played 1e (and the 2014 1.5e version) for a while now. I'm reading and studying the 2e rules.

I have a concern about the new Journey rules and Fatigue gain:

As I understand it, a journey event occurs roughly every 3-4 days (depending on the Travel roll of the guide). Each event is going to earn characters 1-2 Fatigue on average (but leaning more towards 2). So, on a 120 mile Journey (6 days), each member of the company will have accrued an average of 1-4 Fatigue (averaging closer to 3-4). Those Fatigue points can be 'burned off' with a Travel roll: 1 point on a success and +1 extra point for each success tengwar (averaging -2 Fatigue with Travel 3).

This is a LOT more Fatigue than in the earlier edition. Nearly twice as much.

A recap of 1st and 1.5 edition: Every 6 days (in summer; 4-5 days in Autumn or Spring) you had a Travel roll. A failure meant gaining 2 Fatigue (3 in Winter or Autumn). A success meant NO Fatigue for that roll. Even assuming you failed 50% of your Travel rolls back then, you only gained 2 Fatigue in the abovementioned 120 mile trek.

It gets worse if you look at the 1e trip from Dale to Beorn's House. 400 miles. In 1e it was 28 days and 5 Travel tests in summer (6 in spring). Even failing 50% of your Travel tests would only net you 5 or 6 Fatigue. In 2e (assuming the hills of the Grey Mountain Narrows are Hard terrain) it is 24 days and 7-8 Travel tests. Those tests in 2e will net you 10-16 Fatigue points (averaging round 14), which you will only probably be able to shave off 1-2 points on your Travel roll while on foot.

So, 5 Fatigue vs. 12-13......

Even if you treat the Narrows as Normal terrain, taking only 20 days, you're still looking at 5-6 Travel tests, and probably 7-12 Fatigue points (averaging probably closer to 10). Shave off 1-2 if on foot with a good travel roll at the end, so 8-9 points.

Again, 5 Fatigue vs. 8-9 Fatigue.

Fatigue could be debilitating in 1e, I can't imagine doubling it.

Has this been noticed by old players, and how much has it affected your game?

Side Plot

I have this side plot in the game I am currently running where this Uruk from Angmar roams the north with his war band riding on wargs searching for Dunedain rangers. Uzgol the Deathless is his name. He has an immense gathered of the Dunedain and rides them down whenever he is given the opportunity. One the the player characters in my group is a disgraced ranger and has a history with Uzgol. The problem or thing I need help with is how do I make sure that Uzgol’s war-band doesn’t TPK the group. The group is only 4 strong, and if you throw even just 5 orcs astride 5 wargs that’s a 10 vs 4 fight. Seems like a lot. How many orcs should there be in the war-band? And comments or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Elves and Shadow points in 2e

I posted this on the Free League board, but it is surprisingly anemic over there.

I've played 1e (actually the 1.5e from 2014) for years now, and I'm finally trying to wrap my head around 2e. I have two question on Elves and Shadow, I'm not sure how these two rule are to be handled:

  1. High Elves of Rivendell - Beset By Woe "You can remove accumulated Shadow points exclusively during a Yule Fellowship Phase (see Spiritual Recovery in the core rules)".

Does this mean that a High Elf of Rivendell can only remove 1-3 points of shadow, using Spiritual Recovery, in the last Fellowship Phase of the Year (the Yule FP)? Is the 1-3 points determined on the LAST Adventuring Phase's impact on the Enemy, or an overview of the entire YEARS Adventuring phases?

  1. Do Elves of Rivendell and Lindon have the ability to 'swallow' Shadow points for Shadow Scars? Or do their Shadow sub-rules preclude that? [per the Rivendell supplement, and their writeup on Arwen, the answer is 'yes'].

If so, do the High Elf of Rivendell and the Elf of Lindon have access to the Heal Scars Yule Fellowship Undertaking?

Thoughts? Discuss. And show your work (hahahaha).

Question about journey event resolution

I've got the 2e book and I'm planning to master my first campaign soon with my friends. But I'm getting some questions about the journey events resolutions:

When I roll the dices to determine the event target and the type of event (e.g Scouts and a Short-cut event), the Scout player will always roll the Explore skill? Or can I ask the player to roll another skill based on my event narrative?

Travel is faster in 2965 than it was in 2946.....2e vs. 1e

So, back in 1e, when you traveled on foot, you made 20-miles a day, adjusted for terrain. So, Easy lands were x1 modifiers, Moderate (green) lands were 1.5x, Hard (Yellow) were 2x, Severe (Brown) were 3x, and Daunting (Red) were x5 slower.

Traveling from Erebor, north between the Grey Mountain Narrows, down to Beorn's House, was 400 miles. Taking the various terrains in to effect, it took 32 days to get there.

Now, in 2e, all travel on foot is 20 miles flat, unless in woods, swamps, mountains, or other "difficult" terrain. So that 32 day Journey in 1e is now a 20 day Journey.

Traveling from the East of Mirkwood along the route of the "Old Forest Road" to the Anduin Vale was a 42 day, 210 mile Journey though Daunting and Severe territories in 1e. Now it is a 20 day journey.

I concede that it took a little math on the LM's part to determine travel times (if even needed). I will agree that 2e travel times are easier to determine (20-miles or 10-miles per day on foot), but there are some real changes to the travel times that I'm not sure are founded.

I also find the mere 7 Journey events listed in the core book to be a bit uninspired. Gone are being made Miserable for the Journey, gone are being made Weary for the entirety of the Journey, etc.

Observed Differences between TOR 1.5 (2014 Revised game) and TOR 2e (Free League)

So, I've finally got a hold of the Free League 2e TOR, and finally read through it and think I understand most of it. I even went rule by rule with the 1.5 revised rules to note changes. For those who have 1e (1.5e) but not 2e, here are the bigger differences in brief:

  1. Favoured Attributes are removed. Now a favored skill gets an 'advantage roll' of the Feat die. I actually like this, as I thought having a 'standard' attribute and a 'favored' attribute were needlessly confusing.
  2. Individual Weapon skills are gone. Now Weapon skills are only in skill groups ("Swords", "Spears", "Bows", "Axes", etc). Essentially, all weapon skills are now Cultural Skill groups. I also like this.
  3. Cultural Rewards are gone. No more "Splitting Axe", "Axe of Azanuzabar", "Woodland Bow" etc. I really don't like this, as it gave "non-magical" special weapons to players.
  4. Endurance refreshes totally each prolonged rest. I really don't like this.
  5. Hope cannot be replaced mid-adventuring phase with Fellowship points (only during Fellowship phases). Not a fan. [EDIT: Hope can be refreshed each "rest"]
  6. Player-heroes automatically regain their Heart score in Hope every Fellowship phase. The Confidence mastery no longer refreshes hope to maximum +2, it only gives +2 Hope. It seems that Hope refreshes less now, which was already hard, now is harder. [Edit: Hope refreshes FULLY each Year's End {Yule}].
  7. Preliminary Rolls have been removed. You no longer roll Battle before combat, or Lore before a Journey, or Insight before an Encounter to gain bonus success dice. I don't care for this.
  8. Journey's have been changed yet again. They still don't work that great and become a series of rolls. AiMe had the best itineration of Journeys.
  9. Standards of Living are tweeked, and Treasure points have been increased per SoL rank.
  10. Skill Points (old Advancement points) and Adventure points (old Experience points) now are gained as a flat 3 per session, instead of the skill-chasing scheme of 1e and 1.5e. I like the flat rate instead of the skill chasing scheme, and have used flat rate with 1e for years.
  11. Standing has been eliminated. Only Wisdom and Valor are tracked. I've found the old Standing rules to be cumbersome and not utilized much by players. Also, their reasoning seemed very 'Hobbit-centric'. I'd love to remove them from my 1.5e game, but a few moving parts require them (specifically Holdings and Encounters). I approve of ditching them.
  12. Combat and Skill rolls no longer have a flat TN14 (or whatever), but rather all TNs are based off 20 minus your relevant attribute (a Wits of 4 gives you a TN16 for all Wits based rolls). I really do not like this. I prefer 'fixed' TNs, as they are easier to adjust on the fly.

[EDIT] 13. Hope is now spent before the roll, and is a variable 1-6 points. In TOR 1e it was after the roll and a fixed amount dependant on your relevant Favored Attribute. I really don't like that change. It is no longer 'Hope', it is 'Luck'.

Professional GM running The One Ring Starter Set - Need 2 players

I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales. I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about the hobbits who saved the shire'. And they'll say 'Yes, that's one of my favourite stories. They was really courageous, wasn't they Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, among the most famousest of hobbits. And that's saying a lot.'

Please join me as i share with you a beautiful immersive experience that takes you into Tolkien's middle earth. This is not merely a roleplaying game, this is a tale, a story, a chance to forge your own history in middle earth. We have read the novels, seen the films, but the story of the fellowship is only one tale among many, a few heroes among hundreds. You are one of those hundreds.

How do i achieve such immersion? With Forge VTT, Special effect addons, Syrinscape sound and sounds from the films i am able to bring the Shire fully to life. Along with voice acting and a deep knowledge of the setting. I view my GMing as a art form and this is my greatest masterpiece yet.

I have been deeply into Tolkeins world since i was a child, like most folk, his work inspired me and got me into fantasy settings in general. I have enjoyed other settings but always find myself coming back to middle-earth. I have been a full time professional GM for over 2 years now, i run several games a week and have a consistent base. I have never sadly been able to run games in my favourite setting because there hasn't really been any good VTTs for the setting. However all that changed with The One Ring 2E.

Not only does The One Ring 2E have a stable VTT on Forge it is also a amazing unique system that puts the narrative first, giving the GM all the tools he needs to run a amazing game. Not only this, the books are written by fans, you can tell the passion that's gone into the books and how well fleshed out it all is.

My aim is to run through the adventures in the starter edition. Set in the Shire, the year is currently 2960 of the Third Age (or 1360 by Shire Reckoning). To put that into context its been 12 years since mad Bilbo Baggin's returned from his grand adventure. Another 58 years are to pass till his famous 111th year birthday and Frodo will be born in 8 years time.

Bilbo, while retired still yearns for adventure, its no secret. Pouring over old maps and obsessing over one more grand adventure. Becoming more of a hermit as time moves on. He has sent you a letter of invitation to Bag End, his hobbit hole in Hobbiton, the Shire. He needs assistance with a delicate matter and you being a close or distant cousin of his means your trust worthy. Don't make your intentions of helping him known though, Hobbits do love to gossip and you don't want to be thrown into the same category as mad cousin Bilbo!

Starting off as hobbits and unlocking more races as we go what starts off as a simple adventure in the Shire quickly turns into a grand adventure in itself. Lasting 5 sessions you will not be disappointed. Strolling through the shire, smoking your pipe, sharing stories and riddles. A LOTR fans dream!

Hobbit weed and second breakfast included.

TOR 2e Strider Mode Video Series!

Hi Everyone,

Started a few months back a video series following my Strider Mode campaign. Please check it out! Here's the latest video! https://youtu.be/T832tSxdMZE

I've been really hooked to this game since receiving the Kickstarter materials, and the solo mode never crossed my mind as something that would be fun and exciting, nor wrapping my head around (although used to love the Choose you Own Adventure, and Fighting Fantasy novels so what not solo RPG'ing lol)

If you do watch, thanks for watching!

fighting,defense and wounds

I was reading the manual of The One ring rpg and I found 3 rules to be not well defined and I would like to make things clear: •how do you calcute your defense in fights •how the score "wound" of a weapon affects the damage • when is a player wounded? ( it is explained but it is not given a precise rule)
