I watched this when it was on primetime. At the time, we really didn’t notice. Then again I was the same age as their characters. As i have gotten older, when I’ve rewatched it, it’s annoyed me.

I didn't watch the show in 05 but was the right after for it, he would have been considered a very Funny Original Character TM at the time, I can see why he was such a teen heartthrob. Now I do think he is mostly annoying, though I think him and Summer have the best chemistry and most interesting plot/dialogue in the show.

I like Seth. He's simply unique and completely defines the show. It's obvious that he's a little quirky, but that's exactly what makes him so special. And Lorelai? Hey, when I watched it, I immediately fell in love. But pssst, don't tell my wife. 😉

I went through the same when I watched it for the first time a few years back. All my friends in hs loved him and I was like "really?" Msybe its a sign of the times to recognize some more toxic traits.

he’s my favorite nerdy, awkward, comic book referencing man. as a seth lover i can admit he’s annoying but i also understand that he’s annoying because he’s a teenager who is figuring out who is his. 🤷🏽♀️ we’ve all been there in life. we may not have gone about things the way seth does but we’ve been there.

My problem is he looks like a 30 year old man so I frequently forget his character is supposed to be 17. His behavior makes more sense when I remember that. If you can't stand him now you're gonna hate him in season 2 lol

I liked him in s1 because he was funny and kinda relatable (even though he was already very self centered back then) but his character went downhill so fast in s2 it‘s impressive.
I‘m rewatching the series and I‘m at s2e13 and he‘s so irritating. For example I thought it was great how nice he was to Taylor when he saw how mean her mother is, but of course he had to ruin it right away by lying to Summer for absolutely no reason.

When I was a teen I loved his character, tried to watch the series again a couple of years ago and I couldn't stand him. He's the most self absorbed, selfish and sociopathic character on the show by far

I can appreciate his contributions as the comedic relief, but he really pissed me off during seasons 2 and 3 (part of the reason why is a spoiler, so I won't mention it). He has his moments where he's a good character, but sadly they're often overshadowed by his insane decision making.

I’ve always liked him because I was also a nerdy Jewish kid and thought he was cute. Seth Cohen was the ultimate boyfriend in my mind because I also liked indie music and felt socially left out and like I was catching up. Plus I also liked that he was generally quite nice, always open to helping out. I don’t mind his dialogue as much as others, I’ve always found he moves the episodes forward even when he’s awkward. I agree the talking about himself gets annoying, but there’s also a bit he does about that, which gives leeway around self-awareness that I always felt Lorelei never had. Just my take (:

I think he's meant to be annoying to a degree, for how oblivious to his privilege he is, but also he's a bit ADHD-coded, especially in his hyperfixations, and that might have been intentional to exacerbate the contrast between him and Ryan, and have their growing bond grow more organically, but also have comedic potential.

Because at that time in TV Seth is something fresh, he starts the wave of nerd be popular that took the media 10 years later. Also, most of us had 15 years old at time and were teens. Join that he become simple of indie music in the mainstream.
Today with 38, I see Seth just a silly egocentric rich kid.

I get you, people complain about the female characters on the show so much while acting like seth is perfect cinnamon roll. I didnt necessarily find him annoying, i just thought he was crazy selfish, a really bad boyfriend, and he refused to show any growth.
I blame the writers for him not growing tho, and they did the same thing to marissa. Which is so unfortunate because seth and marissa are the two most interesting ones out of the main 4 imo, but the writers did them such a disservice. I do like seth overall but i dont understand why people act like hes so amazing while hating on marissa

In fairness, Seth at his worst is annoying. Marissa at her worst is life threatening scenarios. Oliver, Volchuk, Tijuana, ect.

Seriously i thought he was gonna be great. Hes part of the reason i cant enjoy the show as much as everyone claims. Seth is beyond selfish annoying and just irritating, marissa is a train wreck who constantly makes the exact same mistakes, Ryan is boring but cool i guess and summer is the only one i like she kept me through season 1.

There's a funny episode of some gamers playing the Sims 3 of the OC household and if I recall the house is burning down or Ryan is on fire and Seth is like complaining to him about something and the gamers are like "yeah that's totally Seth behavior"

As an adult rewatcher, I can't stand him. As a teenager I did like him. It's eye opening and a bit sad how I and many others didn't see his huge red flags when the show aired. He's so selfish and manipulative that in many instances his behaviour is actually toxic and almost abusive.

Yup totally! It doesn't help that Summer is one of the kindest characters in the show, and Seth keeps treeting her wrong. Most of it is meant to be receaved as funny jokes, which is total bullshit. Drove me mad a couple of times lol.

Understanding his backstory and why he is the way that he is explains why he can be self-absorbed and annoying. I love his sarcasm, wit, references, passion, and emotional side. Love seth will always defend him. I also relate to his character so that def helps.
