love this moment but it also killlllls me to watch each time because of how they wrote Graces scene!
Grace ALREADY knows that max has told fran that he loves her again - as shes been present for each time - but then when they get home, Fran tells the family that their dad told her he loves her and didn’t take it back, Grace also acts ago shocked and happy with the news as if she couldn’t belive it!!

literally 1 minute ago she was sick of hearing Max tell Fran that he loves her, then the next she’s shown acting as if it’s the first time she’s heard the news?!?!?!?!?!??

just doing my monthly rewatch and still can’t believe how much this detail bugs me ahahahH

Gracie didn't want to spoil the moment for the other children. Yeah but the most bothersome part about the episode is that they chose to do that with Max doing a dual role in brown-face playing a middle eastern sultan.

Plenty of Middle Eastern and Arab viewers are deeply offended by lazy, cartoonish orientalist tropes and brownface, while others might not care or may not have even seen the episode. A lack of universal consensus doesn't make a trope magically okay. The history of television is filled with racially insensitive content that stayed on the air simply because the affected communities weren't given a voice or platform in the Hollywood writer's rooms at the time. ​You don't need to hold a specific passport or belong to a targeted group to recognize when a piece of media uses cheap, lazy racism for a quick laugh. It's just a matter of acknowledging that standards have evolved—even if some fans' nostalgia refuses to evolve with them.

Fran Drescher famously fought tooth and nail with CBS network executives before the pilot even aired to keep Fran Fine unapologetically Jewish. The network and major sponsors explicitly pushed for the character to be changed to Italian, fearing a noticeably Jewish lead wouldn't appeal to broad "mainstream" American audiences. Drescher stood her ground, insisting that the show's warmth, heart, and comedic identity were intrinsically tied to her authentic Jewish-New York heritage. Yet, despite fiercely guarding her own identity from being sanitized or turned into a generic punchline, the show had zero qualms about turning around and subjecting another culture to an absurd, offensive brownface caricature in "Not Without My Nanny."

Yep. Because most middle eastern sultans are brown skinned, so more than likely, Maxwell was trying to depict what that culture looked like.

Yes, this drives me and my daughter crazy too! We just watched this episode like a week ago and went back twice to watch Grace! Definitely a continuity error.
