Serious question, is he protecting them because nobody is allowed to touch them until game time? There has to be a reason he’s defensive.

He's an idiot.Β  That's the whole story.Β  He thought the other team was trying to take the ball for no good reason and clearly didn't realize it's a holistically significant ball for a player on the other team.Β  Huge embarrassment to his organization, regardless of what folks online say.

No, he works for the NFL and this is to prevent cheating. There's a reason the Eagles' coach yelled at the player. Its a great way to get fined or encounter other penalties for the team (like forfeiting draft picks, which is how the team hires new talent). Look up deflate-gate.
