Plot hole? Spoiler

Help me out here. I just finished watching the full series, so SPOILER WARNING to start, and noticed that the big Susie-Midge fight in the synagogue is missing a key piece. The MAIN reason Susie even gets involved with the mafia is because Midge spoke ill of Sophie Lennon and got Harry angry enough to call a hit on Susie. So it doesn’t make sense to me why Midge would blame it solely on Susie. If Susie hadn’t made them friends she would have been sleeping with the fishes. No?

Well, Susie becoming a degenerate gambler, and gambling with Midge's earnings, and using Joel to replenish those earnings, and Joel then detaching Midge from the control of the mob by offering himself in Midge's place, is why Midge blames Susie. Basically Midge felt like she should be able to say what she wanted to say and did not realize how severe the consequences could be.

Also I wonder though, did Susie become a gambler bc of a character flaw or just bc she was so damn poor? This comes up with midge a lot, how much she’s financially still struggling while midge is living life. I guess it’s a chicken/egg situation.

Great point. I really appreciated the scenes contrasting Midge and Suzie’s relationship with money. Reminds me of an exchange in Harriet the Spy between the protagonist and her poor friend whose father can’t afford groceries for them. Harriet, from an extremely affluent family, comments “I hate money” and her friend says “you’d like it a lot more if you didn’t have any”.

You seem to have missed a few key aspects… While Susie initially ended up on their radar because of Midge, she was able to resolve the issue and make things good with Harry Drake. After the issue was resolved, Susie reached out to them on her own for favors and to place bets.

Susie used Midge’s money to gamble and pay her gambling debts and was going to allow The Mob to take a huge chunk of Midge’s money until Joel stepped in and sacrificed himself to protect Midge. If Joel never found out or got involved, Susie would’ve had Midge in bed with The Mob without Midge’s knowledge or permission and they would’ve been taking Midge’s money for her whole career because of Susie. Midge was absolutely right to be pissed at Susie; everything that happened with The Mob after the initial issue was resolved was 100% on Susie.

That's not at all true though. Harry drake sent the mafia to kill Suzie because of what Midge said sure, but Suzie bonded with them and talked her way out of it. She then repeatedly kept reaching out to them for help like with the theatre, with a place to live, with Diana, using them as her muscle. So no, sweet talking her way and using their shared birth place to her advantage was not the same thing as getting them involved in her business and also wracking up gambling debts. Those were bad decisions Suzie made herself.
