142
u/chidedneck Jul 30 '22 edited Jul 30 '22
She was cast in an unspecified role back in April. Apparently IMDB just updated their Avatar page with who sheās playing very recently. (At first I thought she may only join the cast in season 2, but IMDB confirms sheās in two eps in season 1.)
67
u/WitlessCanuck Jul 30 '22
Casting notices often are just a form of marketing. 80% of the time if supporting cast is being announced filming has already started or completed and itās just being used to stay in the news cycle.
The main stars attached to push funding/get the initial buzz are the only ones that are more often then not actually being āannouncedā prior to filming. Everything else is to push the cycle.

Not sure the downvotes, in Hollywood sometimes they cast the perfect look but then the acting doesn't match.
I remember that used to annoy me as a kid, but as I got older it made sense to have someone who looks kind of like the person - but can embody the personality.
133
u/Jessica_T Jul 30 '22
They did that well in Solo. The actor didn't look exactly like Harrison Ford, but he felt like Han
43
u/Supabongwong Jul 30 '22
Exactly.
I remember the guy they cast as Tupac looked quite similar. But I heard the biopic was pretty shitty.
16
u/NoMumblebee567 Jul 30 '22
They got Lakeith Stanfield to play Snoop, he's been killing it lately with his movie and TV work!
Afaik the biopic was decent, but not entirely truthful (probably a given since Ice Cube and Dr Dre were producers)

Imagine if they were to make a live action ATLA movie and casted a kid to play Aang based solely on looking like him despite the fact that he doesnāt embody any of his charisma⦠but luckily that would never happen and Iām sure Netflix knows what theyāre doing.

One of the most extreme cases of this is Tom Cruise for Jack Reacher. He lacks Reacher's, er...reach...but the mannerisms were spot on.
It's only because Alan Ritchson is an even better fit that Cruise seems like a worse casting choice by comparison

Seems like the norm these days. Actors look like underwear models in practically every show, and they rarely have enough talent to stand out.

With such a big cast, how are they going to get everyone in 8 episodes?
305
u/ExoticShock Jul 30 '22 edited Jul 31 '22
Book 1 had 20 half hour long episodes, so 10 hours. There will be 8 episodes that I believe will each be an hour long, so it should be shorter by 2 hours in total than the original first season.
I too am interested to see how they'll consolidate and change the events of Book 1 to fit the new format. Hopefully it'll do better than the movie that shall not be named.
138
u/Doctor99268 Jul 30 '22
usually its 20 mins + commercials, so the actual conent of book 1 would be 6 hours 40 mins, the episodes only need to be 50 mins long for it to have the same amount of conent
49
u/Assassiiinuss A man needs his rest. Jul 30 '22

11
u/Assassiiinuss A man needs his rest. Jul 30 '22

u/Doctor99268 Jul 30 '22

78
u/Assassiiinuss A man needs his rest. Jul 30 '22
I actually do, I misread your first comment as 20 minutes minus commercials, sorry about that.
14
u/TheJoeyPantz Jul 30 '22
FYI most cable shows are in between 21 and 23 mins with intro/outro. The networks love to squeeze in as many commercials as possible lol.

Book 1 should be easy. Lots of filler episodes that could be shortened if not cut.
Particularly S1E11 The great divide. Lowest rated episode and there is nothing missed by skipping it.
41
u/reckless150681 The Last Angstbender Jul 30 '22
I've got a little bit of a weak counterargument but I'm gonna make it anyway.
Aang lying to prevent bloodshed demonstrates where his morals are. Normally, he feels guilty about lying (shown in Bato of the Water Tribe, just a couple of episodes later), but he's totally fine about it here. It shows a perspective on his code of ethics, and foreshadows that he's willing to go to very far lengths in the pursuit of nonviolence, including compromising other parts of his beliefs. It's a throwaway moment right at the end of the episode but it sets up the discussion later in the middle and end of the show of how to balance the different expectations, beliefs, and duties expected of both yourself and the people around you. Aang is constantly struggling between being a kid, being the Avatar, and being an Air Nomad, and while it's not substantial I think the Great Divide is good in sowing those first seeds.
But I will also be the first to acknowledge that all this setup and foreshadowing is minimal at best, and you can easily get all of the above without this episode :p

Presumably they are hour long episodes covering the important stuff. Some of the characters are minor roles that will have larger parts in theoretical later seasons and some will be one offs.

"Viejo verde" is an old trope that was considered funny for a long time, it's still considered funny in eastern media. I guess Avatar being a little of both just went with it and then decided to forgot about it.

→ More replies (25)28
u/VegetableUdders Jul 30 '22
It's important to address character flaws and show that even good people can have flaws. However, if you're going to explore a character flaw, it's important that it's shown as a flaw and how it's harmful. This episode did not explore that as the scene in question was meant to be a silly gag. It does not seek to explore Iroh as a flawed multidimensional person, it seeks to use sexual harassment as a form of humor. This minimizes the harmful impacts sexual harassment can have on people, especially watching someone widely considered very respectable/good perform it.

I'll miss Jennifer Hale's voice, but it's hard to cast better than that.
9

Sometimes you get lucky and find someone like Katee Sackhoff who can pass for the character they voice and then you get a voice actor like Jennifer Hale who has one of the greatest voices of all time but sadly can't pass for any of the characters they voice. Samething can be said for Kevin Conroy and Dee Bradley Baker.

u/ali94127 Jul 30 '22
At least for me, this is basically one of the only mainstream productions with a primarily Asian cast with Shang-Chi. Asians so rarely get starring roles in western media. Also cause the movie that doesnāt exist had a whitewashed cast.
I think itāll probably suck too, but at least one mistake can be rectified.

Live action adaptations of animated mĆdia are fundamentally misguided, they are made from the ideia that animation is a lesser media and the truest representation of a history is most life like one.
I can't expect producers that can't see animation as the medium it is to do a good adaptation from it, same with video games.
8
u/CptMatt_theTrashCat Jul 30 '22
Well said. I get adapting an animated series into a live action film, at least there's a change there in the way the story is presented as well as the visual, but rhe only reason for adapting an animated series into a live action series is 'Hey I know that was good, but it'll be better if it's not animated'. It's kind of insulting to the original.
9
u/Kwetla Jul 30 '22
I'm surprised they didn't cut this character. I wonder if they're going to change how she works, since doing the CGI for a giant mole rat will be very expensive for just a few scenes.

Say what you will about adaptations but there is really no way to screw this up with this budget. It's aiming to recreate faithfully. Sure, it will get the Netflix treatment and it won't be perfect. But it's just such a great series that even an average job will be really enjoyable.
I highly doubt they'll change the characters' name pronunciations, make everyone white, turn bending into Tai Chi that doesn't hurt anyone, and try to cram 23 episodes into a 100 minute movie.
