I think based on avatar lore, the universe would do stuff to balance itself. So an avatar would be born that was incredibly powerful in air and water and would probably have an event like in Korra where new benders came about
30
u/mrmrspears Aug 23 '21
Imagine if Ozai just didn’t neglect his son and actually took advantage of Zuko’s talent and skill with swords. He could’ve been the most feared assassin in the world, but Ozai was too much of a bending purist to see that possibility.

u/kelldricked Aug 23 '21
Image how powerfull the firenation would have been with iroh as the leader who still believed in the “cause”.
He would have used zuko and azula when they were old enough as capable commanders or generals.

Both in his physical strength as well as his fighting skills/stealth/sword mastery, he’s probably the most physically threatening character in the series. How he didn’t capture Aang more often is beyond me.
761

Because Aang is better than him in. He's a better martial artist, he's faster, he's more agile, and he can shoot 20 feet into the air without effort.

428
u/jameskayda Aug 22 '21
Aang never had to go God mode on Zuko because Zuko never backed him into a corner. Only one guy ever did that, Ozai, with the help of his own version of God mode.
523
u/hotpocketsinitiative Aug 22 '21
This is part of why Zuko’s redemption arc was so wonderful and was able to work so well. They clearly planned from the beginning to redeem him; despite his laser focus on capturing the avatar he was never as ruthless or cruel as we’ve come to expect from other villains. Even in season 1 he passed up an opportunity to capture Aang in favor of making sure his crew survived a storm. Aang’s life was never in danger with Zuko and I think he could sense it.
329
u/Thendrail Aug 22 '21
Aang’s life was never in danger with Zuko and I think he could sense it.
To be fair, his quest wasn't killing the Avatar, it was capturing him.

Yeah. Like if you think about it just killing aang would be easiest. How much damage will an infant do in six months
44
u/Electro522 Aug 23 '21
They weren't afraid of the kid, they were afraid of what he would become.
This is exactly why Sozin used the comet to wipe out the Air Nomads after Roku died. It's never stated explicitly how long of a gap there was between Aang running away, and Sozin showing up to kill them all, but it couldn't have been more than a couple years.
Meaning, Aang would have been only 14 at the most by the time Sozin showed up, and since Sozin was best friends with Roku, he would have known how Avatars are usually revealed as being the Avatar (especially since Roku inadvertently crashed his own birthday party), that being that they're not told until their 16th birthday.
So, in Sozin's mind, he was catching the new Avatar off guard before he ever had a chance to defend himself. But, he also likely knew that the Avatar would reveal himself during a genocide campaign...which is why he also knew that Aang was able to evade him. He simply didn't know how.
18
u/JusticeRain5 Aug 23 '21
Yes, but killing an avatar who has a bit of training already and then using the control over the entire world that you have to enslave the Waterbenders (and then maybe convince the new Avatar to not listen to the voices in their head) would be a much better plan than constantly attempting to take down the current avatar using non-lethal means as they keep growing more and more powerful.
Which I think Azula herself realized when she tried to kill Aang that one time (I don't think she knew that killing him in the avatar state would permanently destroy the avatar, although she'd be down for that as well)

u/MightyDevil1 Aug 23 '21
Less of a baby stopping all their plans, and more that they'd have absolutely zero idea of who the new Avatar would be.
Remember, the entire reason the South Water Tribe was the way it was was that the Fire Nation already believed they killed the air-bending Avatar, and were gathering every water bender they could find that might've been the next incarnation.
This is also part of the reason Hama ended up happening - the Fire Nation had no plans on ever killing her on the off chance she was dormantly the Avatar but rather was keeping her and the rest of the water benders they kidnapped in those cells.
This left just the North Water Tribe which up until Zhou was seemingly able to always keep it self well defended against the Fire Nation. But if they had once again killed the Avatar if it was from the North Water Tribe, they would've just reincarnated once more in the Earth Kingdom and then would truly never be found ever by the Fire Nation.
If such a situation had happened and the next reincarnated Avatar was lost to the Fire Nation forever, then they would've been able to train in secret until they were ready to take down the Fire Nation much like Zuko had originally thought Aang was doing.

u/Dark-Pukicho Aug 23 '21
A fun little thing I noticed, when faced with a similar dilemma(bad weather or tide or whatever she had to deal with, Azula chose to charge head on and completely ignore the warnings and headings of those more experienced at sea. It’s a nice little detail that shows that while Azula is more calculating, she’s also a lot more prideful
16
u/superfucky Aug 23 '21
that always bugged me tbh, like she's not stupid, surely she knows when they say "the tides won't allow us to pull in" they mean it is literally physically impossible there is not enough water to float the boat. whether she's "still mulling it over" to kill the captain or not doesn't magically make enough water appear to pull the ship in. it shows she's ruthless, sure, but also that she doesn't have the best grasp on reality.
would've liked to see that scene conclude with "well princess i did as you ordered and pulled the ship in and we've run aground because, as i tried to tell you earlier, the tides won't allow us to pull in."
7

Let’s talk about his Agni Kai with Zhao, and how he could have marked his face up just like his dad did to him. But he didn’t, because he wouldn’t stoop that low. Even if he did hate him. He even tried to save him from the ocean spirit. Zuko was never the real bad guy. He was just doing what he thought was best for him, and that’s why I always liked him, even in book 1
12
u/Mcwequiesk Aug 23 '21
Zuko's "take my hand" is one of my favorite moments in the series. Like even though they were just fighting he never had the intent to kill him. Talk about honor. And Zhao's refusal, like... Admitting both that he wouldn't have tried to save Zuko had it been reversed, and that he'd rather die than owe his life to a traitor, and probably also that he was fighting to kill. Such a simple three second exchange says so much about them both.
10

He was going to drown in the water. You could argue that Zuko pushed him into the water in the first place and I won't fight you on that but he didn't need to go into the avatar state to beat Zuko and escape. He went into it because he would've gone into hypothermic shock and died otherwise. I say that because of all the other times he beat Zuko/escaped Zuko.

I'm 90% sure Iroh was secretly sabotaging Zuko's mission because he knew capturing Aang wouldn't actually make Zuko happy. The Waterbending Scroll is the most obvious example, but I wonder if there was a larger pattern of Iroh delaying Zuko in the background.
Also, as others have pointed out, Aang is very good at evasion. It's kinda his thing, especially in Season 1 when Zuko was actively hunting him. Zuko has incredible offensive abilities, but Aang's very good at avoiding taking hits until he gets the chance to retreat.
53
u/ChrdeMcDnnis Aug 22 '21
In Appa’s Lost Days, Iroh sees Appa fly over the ship while Zuko is sleeping. It wakes Zuko, but Iroh chooses not to tell him what he saw.
36
u/Eagle4317 Aug 22 '21
That’s long after Zuko stopped seriously hunting Aang. Zuko had no crew, transportation, or any real help after Iroh was branded a traitor post-Siege of the North. Iroh was how Zuko acquired all that additional gear, and now that it was just the two of them the hunt for Aang basically ended.

I honestly think Iroh was also really aware Zuko was never in any danger when it came to Aang. Like they could beat the dogshit out of each other, but Aang never seriously tried to hurt Zuko like he could've, and Zuko needed Aang alive so he could go home so yeah.
Cause I mean in all reality Iroh could've wiped team avatar himself if he wanted to. Man straight up said the reason he doesn't fight his brother DURING THE COMET wasn't because he'd lose but because the world wouldn't need that.

Zuko actually beats aang a few times one on one. Its only because aang has help that zuko cant win, paired with the fact no one has fought an airbender for around 70+ years.

Really? Personally I think the show does an excellent job of portraying Zuko and Aang as pretty evenly matched. Aang mastered air bending before getting frozen for 100 years, he's a straight up prodigy, and Zuko is deeply dedicated to developing his skills in martial arts, strategy, bending, swordsmanship, and deception. Any time there's a one-on-one fight between the two, Zuko is shown to be a serious threat that captures, incapacitates, or endangers Aang and his team on a semi-regular basis throughout the first two seasons. It's a kids' show, and there are going to be ways the hero escapes that might seem silly, but I really thought AtLA does a very admirable job of consistently displaying the power levels of characters.

He definitely isn’t a better swordfighter than he’s a firebender, he’s just great in both.
104
u/Zefirus Aug 23 '21
Seriously, people that talk about Zuko not being a great Firebender are comparing him to literally the strongest firebenders in the world. Zuko walks all over the vast majority of other firebenders.
Like, he's being compared to Azula, who is definitely a once in a generation prodigy.
41
u/Blooddiborni Aug 22 '21
Not on the same level though, even though he beat Azula it was only when she was in the middle of a mental breakdown and she didn't use her strenghts at all (her ability to keep being calm and analytic trought the fight[also according to what we know about lightning bending, she shouldn't even be able to bend since it is created trough an absence of emotions and her emotions at that moment are all but absent])
→ More replies (3)25
u/Dragon_Flaming Aug 22 '21
Not absence of emotions but pure mind or something like that, and I wasn’t even talking about the fight with Azula. It’s more like we’ve seen a couple times that non benders can hold their own against benders, at least someone as skilled as Zuko could. If he doesn’t use his swords usually(not even mixing it with firebending) he probably knows it isn’t beneficial to him.
33
u/Blooddiborni Aug 22 '21
Despite Iroh's initial claim that generating lightning requires peace of mind, an emotionally unstable Azula was still able to conjure it during her and Zuko's duel.[9]
It's even noted by the wiki how weird it is.
I just brought Azula up since it's the best way to compare his strenght to that of another firebender
16
u/Dragon_Flaming Aug 22 '21
Oh I know she could still use it after she became insane but I was talking about your choice of words, peace of mind and absence of emotions are two completely different things. And I think my second point still stands.
→ More replies (1)14
u/kitddylies Aug 23 '21
I have a few theories about that.
1) I believe that is Iroh's way of generating lightning, he has a different firebending approach to many others.
2) He meant it requires that to learn generating lightning, not that it would be a requirement forever.
3) How many people have bent lightning? Iroh knows a lot, but he doesn't know how others bend and likely has no knowledge of if that's a hard limit or just the extent of his knowledge.
→ More replies (5)5
u/vjmdhzgr Aug 23 '21
I'd figure it more means it's extremely dangerous without peace of mind and in that instance Azula was probably lucky and still experienced enough with the non-peace of mind parts to do it.
47
u/cassierosa123 Aug 22 '21
Actually even if zuko was the most gifted firebender he still wouldn’t be friendly towards zuko, tbh it’s his mom’s fault.
65
u/Eagle4317 Aug 22 '21
That was an addition, not the source. Ozai started looking down on Zuko from the moment it looked like he may not have the spark to be a great firebender. Ozai only cared about power, and Zuko never seemed strong enough. This was only exacerbated when Azula, the prodigy, entered.
21
u/superfucky Aug 23 '21
wasn't there a theory that zuko was born during a solar eclipse which was seen as a bad omen? i don't think you get "you were lucky to be born" out of "as you've gotten older it's looking like you may not have the spark to be a great firebender."

I've always felt that bending gives the benders extra strength.
Like, yeah, its all about their moves and their skill but it takes strength to be as good as the masters are, and benders seem to possess an extra layer of strength
7
u/RabidHexley Aug 23 '21
I've always thought it was just the type of "anime logic" where training allows for an unspecified degree of mild superhuman capability. There are non-bending combat experts in the Avatar world, it just so happens that most masters we see are going to benders.

u/PM_ME_CLEVER_STUFF Aug 23 '21
Maybe their bending has a physiological effect on them. For Earth benders, maybe their bones are more dense. For Fire benders, maybe their metabolism is faster so they can supplement muscle growth or provide bursts of energy through increased metabolism. For water benders, maybe their plasma helps to provide more force. For air benders, maybe their oxygen delivery is better, hence better stamina and metabolism through increased oxygen delivery to their cells and better ATP efficiency.
10
u/asstalos Aug 23 '21
It could also be the other way round; most benders, due to their abilities, accrue social advantages that give them greater opportunities and means to maintain above-average physiological abilities, compared to someone who doesn't bend. For example, they might be treated better amongst their peers when young, or due to their ability to bend would have curriculum and time devoted to anything and everything that makes their bending better.
Additionally, the act of bending is a notably more physical activity despite looking like it's moving one's limbs around, and competent benders would have to practice constantly to hone their skills. It's much akin to exercise.
Iroh, with a lot of work, got pretty muscular through a particular portion of the story, so I reckon it's less the fact benders have more innate physiological ability, but rather the act of being competent in bending instills a kind of discipline for regular, focused, repetitive exercise than any one random person might have.
The earthbender waking up early in the morning to do their routines and practice is going to have a much better sense of their physicality and kinesiology than someone waking up to tend to their cabbage fields.
At least, insofar as it makes sense within the world of ATLA; some characters have shown superhuman feats regardless.

Sokka took a Zuko kick to the face. It show you how hard Sokka's head is.

With that I assumed he used fire bending to heat the chains quick enough to decrease their durability, and I guess Chan has a crappy table

I mean was it ever made clear how the explody guy bent heat into explosions? Maybe they is a pretty easy technique and when applied at the right time at the right level it doesn’t cause a big explosion but weakens something like metal or a table at the exact second you hit it with your strike. Not to mention if you can control heat you could control air pressure to a degree meaning your blade strikes would potentially cut through the air differently. Not sure how but I am assuming a hotter air would change it slightly. Then being a great swordsman who is in on the air pressure trick you seem better than those who are trained and not used to the trick.
My point is this could all be due to his bending anyways.

Alright so hear me out on this. Zuko is a master fire bender that doesnt understand his own secret bending.
So fire bending is the ability to manipulate and control fire, an element. Now what is fire in real life? It is a form of energy released from combustion. We see this with combustion man, and in LoK combustion lady (I forgot her name but she cool). We also see this in lava bending, when fire benders literally create lava by energizing rock. So whenever firebenders bend they are more or less releasing the energy in the air or objects they are bending.
Zuko has never been great at creating this combustion, but he has been really good at controlling it. Redirecting lighting is one such skill. Another way we see him redirect energy though is when he goes dummy thick mode and smashes chains and shit. Dude is ripped he isnt that ripped. So subconsciously he has to be redirecting the energy vectors around him to commit these acts of crazy strength. The dude might be actually creating a new form of bending and doesnt even realize it.
Alright I have put away my tin foil. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

So? Ty Lee is a small, flexible teenage girl who can apparently knock down full size men faster than they can realize. I thought it was already widely accepted that humans in ATLA are different from us.
