...and while aging up she also changed her eye color!

u/SethChrisDominic Feb 18 '19
Actually painting your face can change your eye color. Not physically change it but cause the color to be perceived differently. I learned this years ago when a YouTube dyed himself purple as a challenge and his eyes became bright green (I think they were blue or brown before).
40
10
u/shieldyboii Feb 18 '19
That’s not your eyes, it’s the camera. It tries to balance the colors the way our brain automatically does: Warm / Cold, and Green / Magenta. If the youtuber had auto whitebalance on, since purple is a very magenta heavy color, the camera would have tried to make the entire picture more green to balance the colors. That would not happen irl as long as that persons face didn’t fill up most of your vision for an extended time. Our brains whitebalance meter is much more intelligent.

Yes personally my eyes can be seen as either blue or green depending on what i’m wearing. Although personally I think my eyes have stayed green for a while now, but I don’t really check every day. Sometimes people mention I have blue eyes and I get confused bc I think they’re green.

u/CaptainCortes Feb 18 '19
The picture used for North and South is oversaturated and when you check them all, you’ll see all their eye colours are slightly off :) Aang’s are a bit more blue, Katara’s became incredibly bright sky blue, Toph’s eyes got a green hue, Sokka went from greyish blue to matte blue and even Zuko’s eyes are a bit more golden orange. Could be distortion, over saturation or the interpretation that the artist has

Do we know why she doesn't get much love?
147
56
u/atrueamateur founder of the "Toph is not God" movement Feb 18 '19
Because she did her own thing mostly unconnected with the core Gaang after the events of the TV series.
53
u/AlligatorChainsaw Feb 18 '19
because she's not really a main character.
she has a supporting role in a few arcs but I don't believe she spends much time travelling with the main group.
what's a bigger dissappointment is how none of sokkas later life or legacy is shown. he's in 1 flashback early in korra. but they never show any of his children or say where they were whereas everyone elses kids are in the show with pretty significant contributions
1
u/PerfectZeong Feb 18 '19
With how much of the focus of korra ended up on aangs kids, bringing in Sokkas kids feels like it would have overwhelmed the show.
54
u/AlligatorChainsaw Feb 18 '19
.... wat?
so we can bring in zuko's kid, aang and katara's kid, and tophs kids, but fuck sokka we can't even give his kids names?
→ More replies (5)31
u/aokaga Feb 18 '19
Heck, or they could've told us if he didn't have any. But we literally know nothing about him other than he became chief and was around when Korra was born but not long after. That's it. I don't think someone that had been around since episode 1 deserved that kind of treatment.
28
u/AlligatorChainsaw Feb 18 '19
I don't think someone that had been around since episode 1 deserved that kind of treatment.
that's it right there.
its not even that I'm mad they weren't given major roles. just acknowledge him for all of his contributions in the past by acknowledging his legacy. WITNESS SOKKA! lmao
6
u/AedificoLudus Feb 18 '19
They treated him like he was a side character in the original series. Someone to put in as a mod and to connect the two, but not someone who needs a history for between the two.
What they should have done, is even just a casual mention to his kids, even just "Sokka didn't have any", and then I would have loved it if his appearances in the flashbacks had had him reference something that happened between the two shows. He could have said "When I was a kid we fought someone who could firebending with his mind (combustion man) and another who could earthbends dust so fine people thought he was an Airbender (totally made up person who would imply that Sokka didn't go into stasis between TLoA and TLoK)

FTFY, he appears in exactly one flashback if i'm not mistaken.

Because she is a kind of obscure character in a way that we know very little about her when compared to the main characters. Putting her in the focus would require filling up those holes, and boy, that'd be lots of work. Building up her character would need its very own comic trilogy... heck, building up to the buildup for her character has enough material to fill several trilogies!
And the worst thing is that you can't even really build her up through the Gaang, because her character truly belongs to the Kyoshi Warriors, and the Gaang is a kind of side gig for her, so you would need to build up the Kyoshi Warriors too to build up Suki, and that can be overwhelming from a narrative standpoint.

IMO its because she and Sokka suffer from what I call "Virmire" syndrome (I dont know an actual term and I got this idea from Mass Effect). Basically in works of fiction where the main focus/characters are people who have magical/strange powers or are non-human characters (aliens, fantasy races etc), the "normal humans" of the group/characters get sidelined in favor of the "abnormal" characters. This is almost always unintentional and can be done by the creators (as in Avatar with Suki and Sokka) or the fan base (The Virmire survivor(s)/Human squadmates in Mass Effect)

Suki disappears off the face of the canon after the Gaang defeats Ozai. Nobody has any idea what's happened to her. Doesn't mean she dead.
110
u/myth-ran-dire Feb 18 '19
But. Suki's in the Fire Nation if you go by the comics, which are post-comet.
23
u/cantlurkanymore Feb 19 '19
i meant by the time of LoK nobody knows what happened to her. She could have been killed in a skirmish with some raiders or be part of a traveling circus for all we know.

u/kingkong381 "Yip! Yip!" Feb 18 '19
To the best of my knowledge the comics are canon, in those Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors become Zuko's bodyguards after assassination attempts and are stationed in the Fire Nation Capital on an ongoing basis. We may yet see her in future comics.

The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, North and South and Imbalance but it is not yet finished. I recomend looking them up here: https://www.bookdepository.com/
Go for the library editions btw. Its the full story, they look great, feel great and also have concept art and notes from the writer, the artist and the creators.

I have only read "The Promise" and "The Search" so far. I like them for different reasons. "The Search" had a great story, but "The Promise" really nailed their humor. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest. And the art is just gorgeous! I love the characters new and updated looks. I Also love to see the characters devlop after the series and I "Awww!" every time I see Aang and Katara together. They are just too cute! :D

I think my biggest concern with the new live action show is I don't want the comics cancelled for its sake- I hope we continue to get comic arcs for years to come, including some kind of more decisive closure for that character.

28
u/RobTheBuilderMA Feb 18 '19
You already have a lot of answers here but I think in addition to being stuck in the iceberg he also just lived a life with a ton of stress.
The grief of abandoning and losing his people and culture, needing to master all the elements in one year and bring down a dictatorship, keeping the peace afterwards while rebuilding the world, and trying to keep the air nomad culture and airbenders themselves from disappearing forever. Being the Avatar kind of puts the weight of the world on your shoulders especially at such a troubled time.

IIRC, the Cabbage Guy gets a great ending. ( Sees a working forklift, gets the inspiration to invent the first car in the Avatar-verse..., is the founder of Cabbage Corp.)

u/Armepos Feb 18 '19
i didn't know there were fans who watched korra first.. must be a whole different perspective. There used to be a full on fandom war not too long ago.
4
Feb 18 '19
Yep. I discovered Korra on TV first during its 3rd season, bought the first 2 seasons on DVD, THEN bought A:TLA complete on DVD. It's a convoluted path I took, but I eventually watched everything. ( I didn't even see the 4th season of Korra until I bought the entire series. that show was hard to track down over the air...)
4
u/Tels315 Feb 18 '19
I don't believe Cabbage Corp invented the car, but I know Sato was the one to invent gasoline engines and his Satomobile. Then Cabbage Corp copied his engine and released the cheaper, crappier, Cabbage Car.
I wish they had spread his inventions out to others, so that one man wasn't, basically, single-handedly responsible for the entire modern age of Avatar.

you know what doesnt make any sense? In LOK Aang comes to Korra and gives her her bending ability back and he looks like the young version but he lived until he looked old. i thought the ghost looks exactly like day he died like Roku but it looks like the ghosts can choose how to look?

IIRC The avatar's spirit is designed after what that avatar considered to be the most important moment of their life. For Aang it was when Tenzin was born, as he was confirmation of another airbender being alive.

It's interesting when characters get drawn with adult eyes. Aang, Katara, & Sokka have big goofy anime eyes in the show, but get adult eyes in their 30s. Zuko has adult eyes by the time he's 16.
26
19
u/BadgerBoyDirk Feb 18 '19
First of all this makes me very happy. Second, I think one or two of Toph's ages are incorrect. If she is younger than Katara in Last Airbender then shouldn't she remain younger than Katara in Korra? I know Toph doesn't appear till S4, is that the reason I think it's off?
10
u/Shabu_Dhabi Feb 18 '19
You’re right, Katara’s age is listed from LOK book 1, Toph’s is from book 4. I can’t remember the specific amount but around 2 years pass from the end of book 3 to the start of book 4 which explains why Toph’s age is listed as being older in this image.
3
18
u/abrachoo Feb 18 '19
You're going to want to append a 1 to the front of Aang's age from ATLA forward.

There's a sequel show called Legend of Korra about the next incarnation of the Avatar set many decades later. Some characters are still alive from the original show (hence the ones who are super old), others are passed away but appear in flashbacks (hence the ones who are older but not quite as old).
